Thanks for the compliments... well appreciated.

no1. The piping system depends on how much client is willing to spend, and design.
whether the conduit system (pipes b4 concrete etc) or surface system, the cost difference on small buildings isn't much - it is however more expensive to lay conduit than surface on very big buildings.

to answer your question; its not cheaper to lay conduit pipes (surface is cheaper to run and maintain too)

no2. The problem of having the rebar go through the blocks is that the columns would like be too small to support the building, What carries the structure are NOT the rebars only but a combination of rebars and concrete cover...... so, please stick with the conventional method

Goodluck

is it less expensive to go with a tiled roof or use concrete slab?

I like the look of flat roofs, but I think it’s less expensive to use a tiled roof.

Is it possible to use a tiled roof on a slighted sloped void? I think this will give the look of a flat roof but will use tiled. Easier to maintain and longer lasting.

Concrete roofs are more expensive and have a higher maintenance need/cost...

if the slope isn't high enough, tiled roof isnt advisable - stick with long span.

I want to say a very big thank you to you. I went through the whole thread and it's educative.

My question is about the precast lintel.
1. What's the details of the reinforcements in it?
2. I read where you replied someone that the thickness of the lintel is 100mm, but the wall it'd bridge is 225mm, is it the plastering that will make up for the rest the lintel thickness?

Thanks.

Morning and thanks for following my threads.
No1. Thickness of Reinforcement is 12mm or 16mm (if you have offcuts on site)

No2. Thickness is 100mm but width is 150mm or 225mm depending on the width of the block used.

You're mistaken width for thickness...

Okay I get your point now, your thickness means height, so may I ask why you used height of 100mm, because if you do insitu lintel, you give it the height of the of the hollow block that will chain with it?

Thanks.. That's an intelligent question.

The resin why 100mm is used is because if 225 is used, it becomes to heavy to lift up and could be risky to workers who try to.

In the case of insitu 225mm is used to prevent breaking blocks to meet up like we do in Precast.

It means 100mm is sufficient even in insitu but easier to do 225mm and avoid breaking blocks to meet up.

Thanks sir

Thanks...
i learnt this method from my expatriate company and we used it in one of Nigerians billionaires house - at Ikoyi

if your foundation is SURE - nothing wld pull a building down (for bungalows), if its a bad foundation, then lintel wont stop it falling either..

I stumbled upon this YouTube video while looking for something else. Their use of lintels is consistent with your application.

Also, the blocks in the corners perfectly describe what I asked in a previous question. No column post, but blocks interlocking at the corners.

Thanks Sir, it still amazes me when some Engr. advice client to TIE A LINTEL all round the structure..... its a waste of fund...
Appreciate your review..

This is one aspect where I expect everyone to save big on the building.

for a job of this size - Lintel works should have cost me about 250k - 300k

carpenter wld claim about 100k, welder wld get about 20k, and bricklayer shd also want close to 40k MINUS materials, transportation et all..

BUT I SPENT ONLY 14K for workmanship now do the maths ( 160K - 14K ) = 146K LABOUR ONLY SAVED.

How did I do it?

I went to the iron store, brought the iron and paid the guys about 5k to cut it to required sizes,

I got to site and got my employed labour to arrange the blocks as shown in pics below (offcourse you also save on numbers of reinforcement used)

For those who would query how strong it is - Iits stronger than the basic need of a lintel which is = (to bridge the space left by an opening)

We still had wood from our German floor and these came in handy

I had to explain to the labour how to cast the lintel and i paid him twice of what he wld have gotten as his day work with the bricklayer..

the result see PICS 4 showing how it was used..

Hi oduncojamaica
I saw your question about lintels, try this method and safe cost, you can read more of my thread for such advice.

Great to know - Thanks for the kind words...
Don't reduce cost by using lesser materials eg 10mm instead of 12mm, 4 bags of cement instead of 6 bags ETC ETC.

Rather, find acceptable ways to cut down on labour cost.

up next is our roofing sheet.

always ensure to use 0.45mm or 0.55mm thickness for your roofing, depending on your pocket.

anything less, then you're better with asbestos roofing sheet....

its better to do it right and you're better for it.....
Sir do you still remember the total square meters (m²) of this roofing and the length of the Kingspost.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi @saydfact what is the dimension of this septic tank/soak away?

author=saydfact post=61687302]Isn't this a beauty?

There's nothing better than doing your German floor - now, we're out of the ground and ready to build..

we left the bore-hole pipe still long, to be cut down later....

Hi.. Sorry, I'm a bit late.
Hope you've sorted it out.. If not, sizes of septic tank depends on the space left on your land and the projected usage.

Thanks
