Recently i got an interview in one of the leading IT Company. It is CMMI level company so i thought to try. I gave written test and technical round of interview, then again technical round with manager and he put me on hold.
After i asked the reason to HR, she told me manager put you on hold. Again after 3 months i got a call that now you have to give final round of interview.
I went there for another technical round and got selected. This time my appraisal is due in current company which is on next month so i can’t accept first offer which is 15% raise.
I have 50k salary so it’s obvious I will get 15% in current company so i asked for 30% raise and she offered me 54k on hand. My current on hand is around 45k so i told her that i won’t join at these much less and if she wants to renegotiate, i am open for that. She after offered me 55k. I was like shocked that is this called negotiation. She is asking me for 1k more. Am i at grocery store or what? I said no.
She said she is chasing me from few days to convince me but now she won’t. So i said, if your offer is convincing, no need to chase anyone. What does it make sense to give someone 1k more? She said, if you want to join at the offer, call me or reply me.
I never replied and called.

Thank you Bogger for sharing my story.

The best time to negotiate for a new job is when you still have Job at hand.
Never ever go below 50% increase while negotiating it is called porching and they must be ready for you.
Also never ever tell recruiter your current earnings. Keep it private.

13 yrs ago, I had just returned to the country from studying abroad on a Master's program.

Got to the final stage of an interview process with a Finance Institution. They offered N6.5M/Annum, I insisted I wanted N2M more (i.e N8.5M/annum). We couldn't reach a compromise.

About 3 weeks later I started on another job that paid N9M/annum in a top 4 Telco company.

Strange thing is ...Finance institution invited me back about 3 months after that, and offered N8.2M/annum (a much improved offer to what they had offered before). I told them the renumeration demand I made to them in the past, was no longer valid. Since events have overtaken the whole thing. I told them I will join them immediately if they can do N10M/annum as my income status has since changed.

Dude looked at me straight and said something like...

"I'm not sure you are right for us, we want people who are willing to work for our brand and not for money"

I thanked him for having me in their office and asked to take my leave.

About 14months later, firm folded up when her parent company (A bank) had liquidity issues .

About same time, I lost my job at the Telco. It was a head I lose, and a tail I lose situation.

avoid working for companies like this. Once you enter you may never be promoted till you resign, that's if you are really good for them. And I doubt you'll have work life balance here as they may turn you to a coding machine. God go sha help you

The reason you'd want to change jobs is for growth which translate to more money. If there's little or no change in salary when changing jobs, you really haven't had any growth. So, I suggest you develop yourself to increase your worth and value and a better opportunity will come.

There is nothing like negotiating your salary too high.

The thing is you know your worth, your qualifications and the value you bring to the table. Based on these you value yourself and that becomes your value.

However, due to the decay in our society, employers tend to under value staff so if you value yourself and an employer is not financially capable to pay then you move on.

Countless number of times I have said no to an employer because they under price me.

Employers need to realize that in the all honesty, someone looking for a job doesn’t give a fokk about their brand. You pay me to do something for you.

Even marketers and sales working to build your brand are only doing so because they are getting paid.

Yeah... Back then, they wanted to pay me 40% less than my salary expectation. I stuck to what I want to be payed... They laughed and told me there's no job out there. I said no problem but still stuck to the salary I want.

I didn't get the job but I have zero regrets about it. I know the value of my time and the value of the skills I have and value I'll be bringing to your business.

So if you want to pay me less than my worth I just smile and refuse to take your offer and move on.

Why? Cos I learnt early on to be self reliant by acquiring a digital skill I can sell at my own pace and time for USD.

Now I don't have to work as hard as a bank manager but this is just midway into the month and I have earned close to or more than the salary of that same bank manager.

Dear Nigerian youth, go to Google and YouTube and learn a digital skill please. It's not going to be easy but you'll never regret it after 3 years or more. Learn a skill you know will always be in demand and you genuinely have interest for given your own abilities and circumstances. Just do your own research and get started from somewhere.

Nigeria is not getting better soon and you have to be prepared for the worst.

This message is just to motivate u so you can get up and take action. I don't provide training and I don't give advice that you can get by just googling or watching YouTube videos on your own. Just take this as a motivational pill to get you off your feet and stop worrying about Nigerian employers.

Soon they will have to employ themselves to do the shïty jobs they pay pennies for.

Yes

I negotiated because I know I bring more that what was offered.

They renegotiated and it was still not up to desired. I told them I couldn't sign the deal. 2 years later they contacted if I am still interested for proposed amount. I told them no, as I just added another certification to what I had.
Is it the certificate that you possess without the skills? Didn't you supposed employer gave you a practical test?

Got an offer from an INGO in the North East, _k USD per month. Did my calculations based on earnings from my current practice, requested for _K with risk allowance, kidnapping insurance and life insurance. They didn't agree to the figures. They promised to get back to me, never did. I siddon for my Lagos jeje. My mama must not hear say I dey go that location.

I know they will come back as I have insiders telling me that the person they employed can't handle their problems. When they do, I will request for Retainership and not employment. Then, the terms will change too.

The reality is there's no job. I observed that most persons want to learn one digital skill or the other because of the constant awareness of the advent of ICT and the need to embrace it in order to be financially independent and free. Some persons don't know which skill to learn because they are availed with different informations which is getting them more confused. Some persons are not sure whether the skill they already have is lucrative enough, some persons want to know which skill is the highest paying skill so they could pitch their tent there regardless whether they'd do well in that aspect or not. This disturbing questions and more is the reason we've created a WhatsApp forum where we meet with like minds who can teach us for free and educate us on what to do in such state of dilemma. Once you know your worth that you are very qualified for the position, find out the average salary attached to such positions and don't short change yourself.

I once lost a job in my early working years because I asked for too little salary. I was already, just the day to come for salary negotiation that they realized I was only good theoretically about the job functions but I was not practically in that field (telecoms), I remember back then me asking for 600k per annum chai! (you can't blame me na, me just 1year after youth service where I was being paid 15k monthly 600k annually was a big deal for me. When the MD said 600K? I thought I had overpriced and quickly said I was open to negotiations (come spoil matter totally). They just told me "thank you, we will get back to you"

While I was going that the MD called me back and adviced me that "actually, let me give you an advice for the future, try to find out the salary attached to the position you are applying for before going for any interview" and that advice stuck with me.

I later found out that the position I was asking for 600k for actually attracts a salary between 2m to 3m.

But what will be will be, I still eventually found myself in Telecoms industry though years later

But wen a man is out of jobs for months and has family to take care off. When employers offer shitty amount, one tends to take for sake of "family must feed"

This is the reason employers ll continue to advantage of people

In the past, I walked away from many offers, once they didn't measure up to my realistic salary expectations. Till date no regrets.

As your current salary is 50k, your next negotiation should not be less than N100k. No graduate deserves less than that.

Ride on, brother. I second this.

I returned to the country in 2016 with high hopes after completing my Bsc abroad.

In 2017, I was jobless and broke.

In 2018, I was shuttling to Lekki from Amuwo everyday for a 45k salary.

In 2019, I worked close to home as an English teacher for 25k/month.

In 2020, I picked up a pen and an empty sheet of A4 paper with determination.

Last month, I earned $256.78 more than the current June earnings you posted, from freelancing, and there's much more room for growth.

Online jobs aren't the future. They're here now. I feel for the younglings currently in universities hoping to blow in oversaturated and unpaid industries like Accounting, Law, etc.
