Nigerians in the UK simply imported that lousy part of our intra- and post-Babangida regime mania of feeling driven to acquire all material things possible and to "compete" with one another in the process. Whatever cohesiveness we used to have as a society fell apart from the late 80s onwards.

Its crazy such that my ex once told me that she noticed her bother in law looking scornfully at my shoe when we invited him to our church many years ago and this is a guy who later went to jail in London for fraud although I always told my son whenever my ex insisted on taking my kids to her sisters house that there is nothing positive that he can learn from my exes brother in law as he is a fraudster.

I also remember an ex girlfriends cousin who was dating a fraudster who I went to UI with meeting us at the Elephant and Castle round about many years ago and on alighting from her fraudster boyfriends car the first thing she did was to run to the front of my car to look at the registration number and ask her cousin (my then girlfriend) to my hearing - what Reg car are you guys using ? Because in those days you could tell the exact year a car was first licenced by looking at the number plate.

Our worship of money and material things in Nigeria is what has brought our country to its current sorry state and the Nigerians in the UK are probably worse than those in Nigeria.

When walking down the road and you see a black guy in a vehicle of 3,000 cc and above, they're most likely to be a Nigerian.

True talk.

We Nigerians like unnecessary show off. Even some Oyinbo millionaires do not own cars and if they did, a lot of them will not drive it into Central London so as to avoid paying the £10 congestion charge, not because they cannot afford to but because there is the tube there and trains to take them back and forth but not with us Nigerians who want to show off their material things to less well off friends and family as a way of feeling bigger and better than them. Now his showmanship may end up costing him his freedom and his job and if he is unlucky a criminal record to boot which means for 5 years he may not be able to get any job that searches the criminal record bureau to see if prospective employees have a criminal record.

All self inflicted because he wanted to show off his car to a friend he earns more money than but that same friend is now in a better place than him.

Hopefully he has learnt his lesson the hard way.

How do you differentiate between show off and living ones best life and buying finer things in life if one can afford it

I say that because I am currently doing the latter and its easy to judge that this is the former part

For some it helps reshape thinking but don't forget that the Brits shot themselves in the foot around 2004/05 when they did what was called Non-Appearance Visa when you could get a Visa without going for a face to face interview at the Embassy and all you needed do then was send your documents though a drop box system.

This meant a lot of people who would otherwise not get a visa in a face to face interview secured visas and the stock of Nigerians in the UK kept getting degraded the more and apart from that even the so called educated Nigerians in the UK still show off to themselves on any and everything be that job status, salary, home ownership status, home size, car price, kids private schools, etc, etc and that's why I don't really keep friends any more and all I have now are acquaintances whereby once we leave the beer parlor I may not see them until my next visit which may be in months. I choose carefully when and who to see now.

Keeping Nigerian friends is like another drama in itself. For instance whats the point of having a friend who believes in visiting soothsayers and prophets who purportedly see visions ? In London o.

And seeing that you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with , I choose carefully those I call my friends as it is better to be alone than to be in the wrong company.

Foe example, you will be surprised that there are lots of Nigerians in London (young and old) who believe in babalawo's and fetishness and actively rely on and consult such charlartans !!!!!

I had a friend who once housed his cousin in London when his cousin was doing a masters degree. Lo and behold, he searched his cousins box one day and found a goat horn filled with juju stuff like the ones babalawos use in Nollywood films. He confronted his cousin and his cousin said he was only using the goat horn filled with juju for protection. In London o. So I wouldn't be surprised if there are more fetish Nigerians per square mile in London than in some cities in Nigeria.

There is a restaurant owner in London who once told me that he came to his shop one day and met a calabash filled with sacrificial juju in front of his shop and he thinks it was put there by one of his more successful competitors on the same road. That restaurant has closed down now and I personally have seen a calabash filled with fetish stuff - boiled eggs, agidi, palm oil placed at a 3 way junction road in broad daylight in a part of London where there are a lot of Nigerians and even all these restaurants we go to in London, only the Grace of God has probably been saving us as a friend told me he once went into a Nigerian restaurant in London unannounced before the lady opened up and he heard the owner on the phone with her jazz man in Nigeria asking him what amount of the "stuff" he gave her she should put into the soup. Luckily for us, that restaurant has also closed down now.

So, the moral of the story is that you may actually find more decent people in Nigeria than some Nigerians living in the UK.

The whole story started from a guy who was boasting and rubbing into his friends face the fact that he is now earning close to £90k pa and at a party they went at London's West End he also wanted to show off his 2021 Car to his friend (when he could have taken the tube) and he ended up having an accident whilst high on weed and alcohol and he is currently in the police net and if unlucky may lose his job and liberty. Its that kind of needless showing off that I am talking about.

Living ones best life and buying finer things in life if one can afford it as you say is OK as long as you don't then because of that start looking down on your friends and family who cannot afford such things as if you are better than them and this is the case with a lot of Nigerians. That kind of competition is unnecessary with ones friends and family or with anyone for that matter.

I would say its all in the mind and the reason for which it was done.
You only live once, and doing whatever makes you happy and floats your boat is fine as long as there's no element of jonesing to keep up with the Joneses therein.

My people and seniors, I need more enquiry for u and will appreciate ur contribution as always.

I currently live in Norwich and am considering relocation. What do people think Stockport or Yorkshire in terms of work, life, school for kids, job pay for a Nurse and a career and side hustle.

Anybody living there or has lived there.

I just learned a lot here..

Ilekokonit et Al you guys are packed with a lot of experience. I hope to learn more from you guys.

But who drinks and smokes weed and then drive afterwards.

Once I wanted to head out and ride my bike, but I forgot I was going to ride my bike then drank beer. I thought to myself, I'm never climbing that bike, I'd rather use the bus because I have fallen from my bicycle once and I wasn't even drunk. Boy was it painful!

So essentially not everyone can be painted with same brush. Some buy nice things not because of show off

This looking down i find it more with people in naija..... people who been here ages know who gives an F about another person money. You not feeding the next person so stay humble . Here nobody tends to send anybody unlike naija were people with money are worshiped or glorified

So the ones fresh from naija..gosh . I see more arrogance especially with those with nothing but feel they have arrive.

I find people who have lived here for ages more relatable and down to earth. Same way I am now painting people with the same brush

That has happened to me once because I used the back brake while riding on the snow, that bike formed figure 8 and I went home with few bruises.

Very good questions....

Live your best life while it last, no one knows tomorrow.

If oyinbo can afford RR and a multi million dollar house, they will go for it without thinking twice.
Oyinbo also spent alot in vacations,,,,, that I know cool

Yorkshire is very big so depends where. But a great region in my opinion. Generally affordable. Lots of countryside and places to see. Being a Frugal person, I am drawn to affordability more than anything else. York itself is a dream, but I wouldn't go there as it's nearly as expensive as London.

Have a look at Leeds or Bradford though Bradford is affordable but Leeds is more developed and demographically balanced than Bradford,

Leeds is also ahead in terms of job and life in general and it has a good transport network hub and share an airport with Bradford.

About 45mins away from Manchester though a bit far to London
