Back in the olden days, rice was a very special food, only cooked twice or Thrice in a year, depending on the families denomination (New year, Easter and Christmas )

Then it became more common and then was cooked every Sunday, and then every other day

But that tradition of cooking it every Sunday still persists

Our parents learnt it from theirs, we learnt it from ours and we will soon teach our kids

That’s just it
very good and straight forward reply!

You cook rice on Sunday for the same reason you cook rice on Easter, Christmas and New year day. Sunday is a special day for Christians .

I wonder what Muslim cook on Fridays.

This same thought came to my mind. My wife has formed it as a habit, and my children are getting use to it. So I had to discuss it with her last week Sunday and asked her to stop it. Today, no rice was cooked in the house, she only prepared moi moi and vegetable soup for everyone.

My main reason is that, I don't want my boys to grow with it as a habit, suppose they start living in boarding school tomorrow and there's no cooked rice on Sundays, let them not end up eating food from an enemy's pot or where they are not suppose to eat at all in the name of Sunday rice.

Moreover so, one need to avoid routine. Security wise, we don't need to be known with a particular food on a particular day, going to the market on particular days, times, to buy a particular thing(s) always, expecially at time like this in our country.

After coming back from Church, the only quick food you can make for already hungry member of the family is rice & stew. Don't kill that woman with stress

Number 1- OP must have done a lot of house visiting to know this- try de stay your house.

Number 2- its a fun day, a slow day meant for rest so time de to cook and relax.

Number 3- its tradition

After that, na beans later on tongue
We can go for a week without eating rice in my house now, we no go even notice am.
But beans is bae with any combination cool
Why nah! Do you want to go to HELL FIRE⁉️
Haven't you heard that one Daddy man of God has proclaimed that "anybody that does not eat RICE on Sunday will not make Heaven"?
.
The current BEAN and EBA & OKRO SOUP you eat on Sundays make you a sure candidate for Hellfire! PLEASE REPENT NOW FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS AT HAND

Another reason apart from the fact that it was costly to afford and prepare back in the days so the tradition persist is that it’s easy to prepare and a perfect gentleman meal for visitors.
