A police officer once said these exact words to me "look at you, you fit be my junior brother age mate and you dey drive car. Yet I dey here dey carry iron (referring to his gun) from morning till night. You must find me something before you go."

I had to give him 500 naira before he let me go.
The last time a policeman said exact same words to me. I replied 'mopol, na me send you go police work?'. That's what you should have said.

Next time you have a case, go and call the armed robbers.

I have never been a fan of the Nigerian police because of several unsavory personal experiences with them. I have made this known several times on this forum, and one time a police officer Nairalander reached out to me privately to let me know that the despite the bad eggs in the Force, good ones still exist. Although I remain unconvinced (worse now more than ever), I still maintain a cordial relationship with this person.

This afternoon, my SO was stopped by the men in black at Underbridge on the road that leads to Guiness, Oba Akran road, Ikeja. They pulled him over and proceeded to do a 'thorough search' of the vehicle. Surprise surprise, what did they find at the corner of the door of the driver's side?

Yep, you guessed right. Colorado, aka Cannabis, aka advanced SK or whatever allied street adjective is given to this brand of illegal stimulant.

This is someone who has does not even fraternize with people who smoke this nonsense, neither has he smoked this in his life. He hardly even gives people lifts so where did this stick of Igbo come from?

You are right again. Our friendly Nigerian Police Officers dropped it there for the usual hydra headed purposes of extortion, intimidation, theft, thievery, harassment etcetera etcetera.

They handcuffed this innocent young man like a common criminal, and one of them nearly slapped him, but when the officer noticed his unruffled demeanour and almost maniacally calm laughter, they realised that perhaps, just, perhaps they were messing with the wrong candidate.

A took a call from higher quarters before he was released after hours of embarrassment and being shackled like a thief who stole the neighbourhood goat.

Now my question is what would have happened if he did not have contacts that he could reach out to? He would have been hauled off to jail and milked dry. There are so many innocent people in cells languishing because the people who have sworn to serve and protect them have betrayed them.

The Nigerian Police is NOT YOUR FRIEND. When they pull you over and want to search your vehicle, be VERY vigilant. If possible you latch their hands to yours so that all of you will search together in case they want to be unfortunate. Many of them plant illegal substances in people's vehicles and living quarters so that they can have an avenue to extort and harass them, and woe betides you if you don't have either connection or money to bail yourself.

THE NIGERIAN POLICE IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!
@Ishilove, your question is a Nigerian, African question. The question you should be asking and saying is, if this is not stopped, this frame-up will be done to someone else. I actually do not believe this story or the outcome. These are my reasons. 1. I have the personality of that "SO" you described in your story, now if this happens to me, there is no way i wont take it up and ensure these guys are taken off the streets. 2. Also, in this day of SM, camera phones, endsars et al, someone will plant cannabis in a car and handcuff the owner all in a frame-up bid? I don't buy it. Like i said earlier, he did absolutely nothing about it. If this happens to me, firstly, i will be memorizing their names (on their chest) and i will grab my phone and start recording or have you do that right away. If i am handcuffed, i will maintain my cool and allow them to proceed and take me to the police station or whatever. No matter what, the guilty are always afraid, the police wey dey do this kain thing go look face, dem nogo just look person wey get the attributes wey you describe, begin frame am. Maybe the guy actually does some "medical marijuana" on a down low.

Is this stop and search thing not a form of SARS again? Can't we stop this from police for good. Police should only search your vehicle if there is any prior notice of any unlawful activities by the person.

Always be vigilant, a police friend once told us then in PH that whenever a police officer wants to search your vehicle, always be alert and ask questions what can i do for you, whatever he wants, make sure you are the one doing it, never allow them in charge of searching because at end, they will plant something mostly drugs claiming you are a criminal.

I approach their checkpoint with a straight look on my face, have my wig as a lawyer on my dashboard and we do not waste time conversing before I move on.

One night I was on my way to the club and some mean looking officers stopped me.. first he did not want to believe I was a lawyer till I gave him my complimentary card.. he said I was too young lol next thing he asked me how much my boss was paying me to enable me afford a car at that point I lost my cool and warned him to stay clear of my finance and stick to his business as a security officer... as I drove away I saw a lot of young guys with flashy cars (who am I to tell if they were yahoo boys or what) anyway I knew the officers had them by the balls and these boys were begging like murder suspects.

I always tell police that I will search for first before you searched me

I once had confirmation with them last month even inside their division, I shouted badly and they kept telling me to keep quiet that am inside police station

It's quite unfortunate that police love to put people into trouble just to extort them

I don't open my booth for police to check till I am there and will search your hands very well before you even check my booth

Coincidentally, this one was a mopol too.

I couldn't move because he jumped into my front seat and refused to get down.

I had no option than to give him something.

This is why it is advisable to search police officers first before they search your vehicle or house. Those people are hardened criminals in uniform.

Always make sure that only one officer searches your vehicle...
Please don't ever let another officer to start searching from the other side where your eyes are not reaching..
Just plead with him earnestly to stop his own search and allow only the officer in front of you to do the whole searching.
