Studying computer science in Nigeria is a waste of time. When I went for NYSC, I went to enroll for a computer programming course and a computer graduate came to enrol too. I was like : "Dude, if you don't know computer programming after spending 4 solid years in school, what did you learn"? He told me he knew a little bit of the theoretical aspect.

Why most courses are useless is because most people study them in other to get employed. If had study to come out and solve a problem relating to what u studied. I bet u, u will understand that it is good to had study what u studied.

People get a degree for employment everywhere in the world.

This course is actually useless because there are competitions from relevant courses.

Organizations will rather work with someone with a social work degree than someone with a guidance and counseling degree.

And then there are pastors. Educated (but religious) people will rather seek counsel from a pastor on every matter.

Same with doctors. You will see people seeking marriage counseling even from their doctors.

Only schools give regards to guidance and counseling degrees, and how many schools really have counselors for their children? They would rather employ a child psychologist.

If you have a degree in guidance and counseling, my advice is that you invest in a similar but more lucrative course like social work.

Otherwise, you will continue to drag spaces with pastors and alfas, especially.

And you know that religious people are very much likely to pick their religious leaders over an expert when it comes to counseling.

I am not interested in dragging with lab technicians or any profession in the health line.

The ordeal I narrated happened to SIWES students. Why accept SIWES students and not train them? Why should a professional be afraid of SIWES students? As far as SIWES is concerned, it's all about the grade and knowledge. It will take an Einstein to setup his test/research laboratory after 5 months SIWES.

A colleague who studied microbiology is facing the same issue as a corps member at a particular FMC in Ogun State.

This issue is rare in private laboratories though.

I did my SIWES at Cocoa Research in Ibadan and I was shown everything. My colleague who interned at Coca-Cola in Lagos was shown everything, of course no one has access to the formula.

To be candid, the gate keeping in the public health sector just doesn't make sense.

I believe those med lab guys do what they do because of the Nigerian factor. Don't be surprised to see one of those IT students trying to set up a lab just after the five months training. You know in Nigeria, many people lack discipline and honesty.

The problem in Nigeria is that the course is already saturated with too many graduates having a B.Sc in Biochemistry. Almost every university in Nigeria offers biochemistry and year in year out they keep churning out graduates of biochemistry. Besides, they are not even properly trained in terms of practical exposures.

By the way, the purpose of BSc biochemistry is not for you to work in medical laboratory. It is a research-based discipline aimed primarily at producing researchers in the field! But here in Nigeria, the purpose has been lost and that is why graduates of biochemistry now see medical lab scientists as enemies and rivals. Meanwhile, medical laboratory scientists are the ones that have the requisite training to man clinical labs. Check your curriculum and compare it with that of medical laboratory science, you'll discover (if you're honest enough) that there's a whole lot of difference.

I think the way forward is for the NSBMB and other stake holders to go back to the drawing board, rediscover the purpose of the course and focus on it, whilst cutting down on the number of intakes into the program and equipping training labs so as to impart the right practical exposures to the students.

This is coming from a biochemistry graduate(2-1) who is now a pharmacist.

Worst in the sense that you will not advise anyone to go for the course.

Worst in the sense that even if you are paid so well to do the course, you will gladly refuse/reject the offer.

Worst in the sense that if you have the power to delete the course from school curriculum forever, you won’t waste any time in doing so...

If you ask me, I'd say it's Microbiology.

I have absolutely no interest at all in the course. In fact, everything about Microbiology gives me the heebie-jeebies!

I asked a friend, and she said it's Music for her.

There is no best or worst university course to study. What the university does for you is to give you a well rounded view of yourself and the world you will be going into. The best bank MDs did not study banking. In my company, the MD studied applied economics. the head of IT made a first class in physics. one other boss made a first in mechanical engineering (we are a service company) I could go on and on. We still have fliers from people that studied French and History.

There are limited courses where you must practice what you studied. So just go to school and make the best of your grade. There is a reason the consulting companies do not specify courses but they just say, come and write selection tests if you had first class or two-one.

if u have "working"as plan B, it not a problem but when you put all ur hope on working without having the plan to use what you study to better the society then you had missed it somewhere. Many of us missed this while in school and it should be corrected.

You don't know what you are talking about. This is exactly my point in my tech businesses in the programming section of Nairaland that most Nigerians these days arent innovative. The only thing Nigerians mostly know is copy and paste. Doctors (except researchers among them) are mostly copy and paste. Pharmacists are mostly too. If you want to know those who use their brains, they are mostly those who work in laboratories.

Your teachers do not allow you because you dont show interest. Show interest and prove yourself, then see how opportunities flow in. Find the professor who is outstanding in your department and prove yourself. Find out who are his/her research assistants among the masters and phd students. Tackle those ones, and they will show you the way. Just like how doctors need to tackle nurses and matrons while they are in school.

Listen to me: Biology and Micro-biology are one of the most outstanding courses in this present world. They both pave way into genetic engineering and science.

And to answer your course, study anything during your undergraduate....the sky is the limit. You can easily port to another field. It is very easy these days. That being said, you should try to choose something you are interested in. And if you are offered a course you dont know about, ask if there is a way to cross to the course you want to do in the future. If there is link, go for it.

I don't believe that people should study just any course they're offered and then start switching to other disciplines later. It breeds mediocrity and frustrations! That is the same reason some biochemistry and microbiology graduates now try to drag space with medical laboratory scientists despite the later being better trained and licensed for the job.

If you're implying things like computer programming and the likes, I believe that can be done with just O-level education, so why waste time going to the university

You never enta Coca-Cola, pharmaceutical or yoghurt factory, that's why.

Maybe in the medical field, biochemists are discriminated against, and that's even in Nigeria, sef.

A student trying to set up a lab after just 5 months SIWES will fail. If by chance they don't, they should be given presidential recognition.

My lecturer who has a small lab in my Alma Mater had 2 P. hDs from foreign universities before he could think of owing a lab.

A month after SIWES, myself and my guys could still produce cocoa bread, chocolate et al. But we can't even think of it because we had other pressing issues.

The cost of apparatus is enough to discourage not to talk of the cost of machines.
