seguno2: Included a Yoruba not included Yorubas. Only one was a Yoruba so it is deceptive for you to use the term "included Yorubas". Coups are led by leaders and in this case, the leaders were Igbos of Eastern and Midwestern origin. In any case, it's not the coup per se that was the problem. It was the aftermath. No single Eastern politician (Azikiwe wasn't killed, for instance) was killed in the coup and the East dominated the officer corps of the Army after most top Northern officers had been killed. Aguiyi Ironsi became the head of state and refused to prosecute the coup plotters while also destroying the regional system of government and installing a highly centralised command and control. As if all that was not enough, there was a lot of gloating by Igbo people. I can imagine a lot of them were shouting "Igbo Amaka" and enjoying what they thought was Igbo dominance. That's what led to the counter coup and the attacks on Igbo which made the civil war unavoidable. 3 Likes |

phemmyfour: And in every coup thereafter, with the exception of Buhari's regime, lives were lost. Lives are almost guaranteed to be lost in a military coup. You're being evasive cos you know very well that an Igbo military officer foiled the coup. How can you even say it is an Igbo coup when ab initio the coup masterminds were not exclusively Igbo? Since Ademoyega was one of the masterminds, safe to say it was an Igbo and Yoruba coup then? I put it to you that you are either a bare-faced liar or you're talking about things you're ignorant about. There are books out there. Read and be liberated from the shackles of ignorance; unless of course you have an agenda against Igbos. For starters you can read Why We Struck by same Ademoyega. 1 Like 1 Share |

seguno2: I am not the one who said that. But yes, that's what most people think and it's all down to the poor way Ironsi handled the coup. For starters, a public execution of the coup plotters would have saved his life and absorbed him of complicity in the coup. 2 Likes 1 Share |

EmptyGarden: Bros calm down. This was in the 50's/60's. Back then public smoking was a normal thing. Below is a video of former British prime minister sir Winston Churchill smoking in public on the day of his resignation. Nigeria was colonized by the British, smoking was a normal thing back then, in fact it is even common among the elites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_Uj_o1L-e0

TheRealestGuy: Just one guy was Yoruba (ademoyega by the way ended up fighting with the Biafrans). One Yoruba Vs 4 people of Igbo origin. Come on, as far as any neutral observer is concerned, the Igbos plotted the coup. Soldiers and politicians from all other three regions were killed, not a single Eastern politician was killed. How does one decide to kill the sardauna of Sokoto and the prime minister and not kill the eastern premier? At the end of the coup, the North had lost most of its senior military officers and Igbos were dominant in the officer corps of the army. When you add the reluctance of the Igbo head of state, Ironsi, to prosecute the coup plotters and his plan to centralise control in Nigeria, then you can forgive people for seeing it as an Igbo coup. N. B. I have not even mentioned the "Igbo Amaka" attitude of the Igbo commoners who saw the coup as an evidence of the superiority of the Igbos over others. When you consider the case 1 Like |

FarahAideed: Like I wrote in that post, some people are predisposed to certain medical conditions. If genetics predisposes you to lung issues, you should not smoke. And since you can't be sure that you are not predisposed to lung problems, then you should play safe by not smoking at all. It is an unwise thing to compare bodies. One tobacco smoker may live long without lungs problem, it doesn't mean that tobacco inhalation is not a major cause of lung issues. 1 Like |

einsteine: The north never had much senior officers at the time. The military, just like the civil service was dominated by southerners cos of the educational advantage. You are now suddenly knowledgeable but won't talk about who foiled the coup? If it was an Igbo coup then there's no way a Yoruba man would have been one of the masterminds, no? Anyway, the officers involved clearly stated their reasons for the coup but people will always fall for cheap propaganda. Also, are you aware that at least two Igbo army officers were killed in that coup? Talking about Igbo amaka is meaningless because it is normal for Igbos to be happy that harm befell those who hate and have been killing them for no reasons even pre independence. All these rigors you're going through so as to justify the 1967 pogrom is the kind of heartlessness that defines the average Nigerian anyway. It is why we are where we are. |

Nigeria started on the right path, on a democratic part in the early 1960's, we had righteous leaders then, but due to selfish reasons, 1966 the overzealous dumb, myopic, ethnic bigoted Nzeogwu and his collaborators, all mainly from South East, destroyed everything, the big mouths and braggados didn't allow our new democracy time at all...his soul will be damned forever. He caused all our problems. |
