A confession cannot be retracted just like that. Her only hope would have been to claim that she was tortured but that is clearly not the case. The fact is, the judge is called upon to decide which of her stories, in fitting with the evidence and previous confession, is devoid of reasonable doubt.

It comes down to a common sense evaluation of the facts.

You are correct, She needs to prove duress to jettison the first story but unfortunately for her the statement wasn't even taken by the police but the media. It was a video evidence and she spilled everything to the press, it's going to be really hard for the counsel of the accused to prove beyond doubt that the interview was done under duress.
The facts of the investigation goes with the first account rather the the second, surely she will get the death penalty hammer because under cross examination she cant hold unto that second narration.

In law, there is no guilty except being found guilty by a judge. By the way, doing the crime doesn't make you guilty.

The lawyer can get sued or arrested for incompetence if he does something of his will and against the girl's will. Also, it's the overall duty of a lawyer to defend a client and make sure d client wins the case even if the client happened to be a serial killer..

The initial confessions were not obtained under duress so remains admissible evidence.. she never at any time alleged that she was forced to admit to the murder.. she may amend her confession to include accomplices (though she hasn't yet admitted this fact) but not to deny culpability altogether without reasonable justification.. won't hold..
