The real and original owners are Igbo People.

The ancestors that made these bronze artifacts were the same people that made the ones in Egypt. And these ancestors were Igbo. Return it back to the original owners. The Igbo People

You must be joking right? So they should return the pyramids and mummies in Egypt to the Igbos too? grin grin

Most of those Benin bronzes were not manufactured in Benin but were brought by other tribes..

Yes, just the way the pyramids were brought to Egypt by other tribes.

Do you know why politicians run to traditional rulers when its election time. Let Obaseki try any rubbish with the Oba of Benin and see what Benin people would do to him. He is a Bini man sef, so he already knows his boundaries.

My guy you funny.. You said the truth.. Its Benin property

The artifacts will be returned to Benin..

I don't know what Obaseki want to do with traditional ancient artefacts.
If they're kept with the government, another government will take over someday and might not value those things infact many might be stolen.

Those artefacts are more
esteemed to traditionalists, than the government.

Oba of Benin is the rightful person who deserve to take custody of those things and house them in the palace.

It is not right for the federal government to hold on to those things.

Baba might take a loan and use those things as collateral. shocked

Give it to Oba for the culture
Oba of Benin will get nothing because revenue generated will go to the state government for development of the state. Oba will used the revenue generated to benefit his family.

I really don't understand why people are sentimental and bias about this issue.

It makes more sense for the Edo state Government to keep it since where the bronzes were taken are now under their jurisdiction.

The reason it should not be handed over to the Oba of Benin is because the traditional system has no recognized role under the constitution and there are no checks and balances to check the excesses of the traditional body. For instance, what stops the present Oba from keeping those bronzes as his personal property if handed over to him.

The oba can’t keep them; he’s the head of tradition, he leaves and dies and someone else inherits it. It’s not his property. State government will mismanage it

I just wish to point this out Hornytave. you can't pay them if you are to give each Benin speaking community in Edo south an Enogie. Some of these community Enogies have like 12 other big communities under their jurisdiction, when these communities are in crisis they go to such Enogies to preside over their issues. Enogie of Evbobanosa preside over like ten communities, the same with the Enogie of Iguobazuwa.who preside over like 12 communities. Very few Enogies preside over just one community and those communities must be populated enough and must be semi urban

many communities without Enogies have Ohen or Okhao.
They tend to be independent of the Enogie and are very stubborn in land related issues.

And you think Obaseki cannot keep it as its personal property.

This is very simple, state government should concentrate on his role in fulfilling his mandate. Keeping artefacts isn't one of them, let the traditional leaders handle their forefathers

Those artefacts are better off in European museums. At least, we get royalties annually for them.

But in Nigeria, we need well maintained museums to keep these artefacts intact.

Neither the FG, Obaseki nor the Oba of Benin appear prepared for this job.

They just want the artefacts back. No one is talking about the cost of maintaining them or the availability of art lovers who would be willing to see these artefacts.

Do you know how much it costs to preserve a single artefact?

About 750 dollars per 3-dimensional object every 6 hours. And there are hundreds of those artefacts.

We don't even have preservation materials, which means we would be importing them.

It also costs money to store them. Although not much money; around 30 dollars a year.

Where will the Oba get all that money? From the state government which struggles to make something out of limited allocations, or the FG which is battling inflation and post-recession challenges?

Bring those artefacts to Nigeria, and watch them disintegrate or lose their gloss in a year.
Re: FG To Take Possession Of Looted Benin Bronze When Returned From Germany by ajl: 2:26pm On Jul 18, 2021
We all know the owner of the artifacts and where it was stolen from. It should be returned to the rightful owner, which is the palace of Oba of Benin. Irresponsible govt trying to play a fast one. Which jurisdiction? The Oba of Benin should head to court. The items doesn't belong to Nigeria that does not value history. It belong to the Benin people, and this is represented by the Oba of Benin.

See this one! Maintain what artifacts? Like they dropped from Mars. Where they not held at the same Oba of Benin palace for hundreds of years before they were stolen. It's bronze, not some wooden item that will be eaten by termites. If the Benin people did not take care of them before they were stolen, how would they have been stolen in the first place. Are people reasoning at all?

tell us more. what's needed to preserve them. good air ventilation or air-conditioned room. dusting them. we can employ specialists in these area. stop being a colonist and think of doing work yourself !

the oba no get the money. him and him family are all living on government allowance and then they can travel everywhere in the world. the rightful place is a museum constructed and maintained by the state. the oba should be proud to be a trustee.

God help my people to reason. Where were the artifacts stolen from by the British? Largely from the palace of the Oba of Benin. So, the items are simply returning home to the rightful owner.

And what constitution are you referring to? That fraudulent document that only the northerners want.

Sad, they did not teach you history in high school in Nigeria. History has it that in the ancient Benin, the royal palace had multiple bronze arts makers that create those objects as way to keep records of events and incidents that involve the king or palace. They were made for the pleasure of the kings then. So, they belong to the palace, and largely to Benin people. Not Nigeria.

To be fair, I think the obaseki idea would have been the best.

He wanted to create a museum to display these beautiful arts to generate revenue for the state.

The oba wanted it in his palace where it would be probably be under restrictions, and all revenues will go to him alone.

Lai Muhammed will probably put it in his office, because I don't know if there is any federal museum in place.
Those artefacts were never meant for generation of revenue from the public by those who made them in the first instance. They were carved for use in traditional rites in certain cultural practices which the people still do till today and that is why Obaseki, as a Bini man aware of the culture, initially, and as far back as June 2019, agreed with the Oba without any argument that the artefacts would go straight to Benin Royal Museum. So why is he now changing tune?

The artifacts belong to the sovereign in the land, which is currently the Federal Government.

Yes, they were taken from Benin Kingdom, but that kingdom has long ceased to be sovereign, and so it falls to FG to own these artifacts.

If Benin wants to collect, it should become its own kingdom again, independent from Nigeria.

As for the state of Edo, it has no say in the matter.

Nigerian sovereignty was imposed on Benin Kingdom. Remember? Is there any record of the Oba of Benin granting consent to the creation of Nigeria?
