It's abnormal. I was brought up in deeper life as well and I quickly realized how unbiblical the marriage committee was.
I left and had my courtship and marriage and that was 16 years ago.
The day I had my court wedding, I never told my parents, went from work with a couple of friend and viola, I was married.
The parents were not happy with me but, it's my life not theirs.

Go out there and make a meaningful relationship and ignore all those church rules.
