Big Brother Naija housemate, Maria has revealed the trauma of her family since the diagnosis of her brother’s mental health illness.

Maria told Big Brother that her brother was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. She made the disclosure during her diary session on Friday.

Biggie had asked what she thought of the day’s task on Mental health” and she said the mental health awareness campaign hits home because it brought back memories of her brother who was diagnosed years ago [color=#d7e0c9]Daily Prayers[/color]

She said her brother’s illness has been hard for her family since he was diagnosed with the disease.

“A couple of years ago my brother was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. It’s been hard on the family because it can never be cured.

“He is on medication and constant watch in the hospital. He was a perfect human on everything he did and then he got diagnosed. Not all of us have been the same in the family since then.”

My Uncle is diagnosed with same condition. I really understand how she feels. It's not easy living with people with such condition especially in Nigeria with zero awareness on Mental health. I remember years ago it first started my family kept jumping from one pastor to another, accusing enemies of having a hand etc. I kept telling them it's a mental conditions no one believed me. The response I usually got was "madness doesn’t run in our family". When they finally listened and he was admitted in the pshyc ward the difference became clear

Mental health has been largely overlooked in this country when It should rank among the top welfare package for the citizenry. Alas the same people to implement all of these packages are the ones at the core of its cause.


How can things increase steadily in an astronomical manner while income source is either stagnant or decreasing and you expect the populace not to go mental?

Truth man, also have one in the family but the drugs are not that easy to get if person is not financially stable and the worst is if that person break down, usually worst than how the issues start.

It's not a disease pls. Schizophrenia is pseudoscience.

And you are so convinced you are mentally okay? Do you even have an idea what "runs" in your own family tree?

What we all owe people struggling with mental health issues is empathy, which should also be extended to their families as well.

Schizophrenia can be triggered by environmental or genetic factors.

More awareness is needed on mental illness, rather than blaming “village people” and running to confused pastors.

Look out for patterns that triggers it, deal with these…and the situation is easier to handle (speaking from years of counselling experience)

Is it possible to get the relative on a health insurance that will cover it because the drugs are expensive.

It's sad.
My experience in neuropsychiatric hospital comes bare.
Like, it's not their fault, they just got an hyperactive beyond ordinary brain functioning.
I don't like that illness at alllll.
