It's a reminder. Maybe the government is not aware of what's happening underground. And the post will also let young people know that going to university is better than Polytechnic

Actually this is a wrong assertion. I have an HND but after finishing I have done over 15 certifications. Before you go into where is the money for it, I started my certification journey during my NYSC. I saved a fraction of my allowed monthly to fund it. Today I work with one of the largest organizations in the world. I have interviewed with so many global brands and most times, they rarely ask about my first degree. My advise is that you build yourself. Beyond your first degree what other skill/value will distinguish you?

Sad.
I have both.

No particular one makes one better than the other.

Your development is actually based on your interest and zeal to learn

At the work place, sadly the discrimination is real. You will find the good in both cases and the terrible also.

Nigeria is a useless country!! And by the way I am very surprised to see what some job seekers are going through after reading this thread. People still looking for Jobs? I will just say people should stop searching for job that is not available. The era of believing only on paper certificate is gone, please diversify to digital skills.
You can learn 3D Animation, Illustration designing, graphics designing, programming, video editor, photography, painting, electrician, data scientist, UI/UX designing, blockchain development, AWS development, AI development, Manga Artist, Comic Artist, AutoCAD designing, AutoRevit designing and many more. People should invest their time and money in any of these things. The era of having only paper certificate is gone in Nigeria

There is just one solution to this dichotomy problem and our fg is so backward thinking that they can't generate the balls to do it.

The solution simply lies in converting all the polytechnics to university of applied sciences. That was what German did to solve that problem when they had this same issue. Same with the uk whose educational model we copied to create polytechnics in d ist place. Anglia Ruskin university was formerly Anglia Ruskin polytechnic.

They should turn them all to uni of applied sciences running 4 years degree programs equipping students with effective practical skills for the world of work with an industry focused syllabus. That's what all forward thinking countries av done to move away from polytechnics.

In Germany, HND from Nigeria only qualifies you for bsc admission to start year 1 so y are we still holding on to this vestige of the past

It is not about certificate but divine favour from God. When God remember you certificate does not mean anything. I am HND holder and I also lecture in Polytechnic.

I had this experience at a job interview that really got me worried. The aptitude test/interview venue was crowded with young and vibrant job seekers from different states and academic backgrounds. I spoke with one of the candidates who said he traveled for twelve hours just to make it to the test centre, and he's lodging in a hotel.

We all fell calm when one of the conductors of the test came out to address us. He announced that all HND holders should go back home, stating that the organisation doesn't recruit Polytechnic graduates. Unfortunately, the guy I met initially who traveled for 12 good hours was an HND holder. He felt really sad. By his expression, I knew he was wishing he turn back the hands of time and start all afresh with BSc this time around. As if to confirm my guess, he said he'd enroll for a degree course. Trying to make him feel less disturbed, I told him that if HND was the issue, he won't have seen a crowd of unemployed youths here as most of them were University graduates. I, for instance graduated with a 2 1 in economics since 2018, yet I'm struggling with job. If having an HND result was a reason for unemployment, having a university degree would have been the solution.

We keep hearing the law makers say they've abolished the dichotomy between University graduates and Polytechnic graduates, yet employers are doing as they please. Why not stop Polytechnic if it's no longer revelant in today's world rather than subjecting innocent people to inferiority complex? No one cares how intelligent you are as a Polytechnic graduate, you won't even have the opportunity to prove yourself. Worst of all, you will see something like "third class/HND. How do these belong in the same level?

You did well by trying to encourage him but the technical truth is that there is nothing wrong with the HND. It is just a method to screen people out because the jobs are very very few. For the B.Sc holders, there is going to be another screening method.

If Nigeria was a vibrant country with boom industries, I don't even think the current population of graduates can fill up the space. YES! There is so much to be done to move this country forward, so much that it will require employing people from outside Nigeria while begging those with HND to accept jobs. I am just giving you an idea of what is wasting in this country.

However, one, in this age and time MUST NOT depend on a paper degree only. This is why I will always advise people to get digital skills and the possibility is endless. Super endless!

OP
PLEASE DON'T BE ANGRY!! Let me Tell You the Honest Truth!

The reason for the dichotomy or perceived segregation b/w Poly and Uni graduates is mostly due to the Process of their getting admissions.

Polytechnic undergraduates get the Admission all too Easy due to Low Cut-off marks..
All Tom, Dick and Becky gets admitted and Most are Dull or uninterested in Education..
One in my State Delta, Otefe-Oghara, It's like it Harbours all The small small Yahoo Boys in Warri and environs! undecided

But in University, those admitted Most times have written Jamb/Post ume like 2,3x..
Hence somehow making dem More Academically sound than their Poly counterparts!!
Also, Most students go into Polytechnics with Low motivation because of the issue you raised hence they perform poorly in School!
While University new intakes are always Charged n Motivated because of incentives attached to First Class!!

So OP.
The Nigerian society will always Place University graduates Over Poly graduates!!

But Your Institution graduated from shouldn't hold you Back! sad
Billionaires, Magnates, Entertainers, etc graduated from Polytechnics and are Very Successful! smiley

Do a top up degree online, problem solved. Takes just one year. HND is not the same as Bachelor's. The diploma had a different reason from the degree. Unfortunately, Nigerian factor has come into play and the role of polytechnics has been misplaced. It's better to merge some of those polytechnics as campuses of university or change some of them to university.

There is a reason polytechnics don't have professors and are heavily focused on "practicals". The training of the poly graduates was to be a technician while that of the university is to be a manager.

In typical British education, at secondary level, those who are academically gifted went to "grammar school" and then proceeded to university. Those who were more technically/trade skilled went to technical school and then proceeded to polytechnics.

It is due to Circumstances!! Many wanted the University admission, but couldn't get it!
But if a Polytechnic graduate comes out of School with Powerful result
And he or She has other Digital/Enterprenuerial skills, the Person will be a Big Time Success!! smiley

Only dat, most are Demotivated!!

I laugh when I see posts like this. It's not about Bsc or Hnd. Like someone stated some Hnd graduates are better than thier Bsc counterparts and vice versa; it all depends on the individual's zeal to develop and learn more.

I'm an Hnd graduate and I was manager at a private organization for 6 years where I constantly interviewed Msc graduates that appeared not so sound.

I had about 20 people who worked under my supervision. In the end, I resigned to start my company and now have almost 10 staff, because I learnt on the job.

So it's up to you NOT to limit yourself based on your qualification. Moreover where are jobs even for Bsc graduates?
