Firstcitizen: There was no other empire in pre colonial southern Nigeria other than Oyo, Benin was a kingdom and never expanded to any Lagos. You can't find any Benin name in any of the six Yoruba states but there people with Yoruba names in Edo and Delta. 1 Like |

MENELIIK:The fact that there are yoruba names in Edo and delta have nothing to do with OYo kingdom. It is because Yoruba is a big tribe and nothing else, and the other tribes you see some of them with Yoruba names it is as a result of intermarriage, proximity to yoruba land or the fact they grew up there. And yes Lagos was under Benin empire. OYo was a confederacy, not really an empire in the actual sense "The products of the blacksmith guilds were also means by which the Oba determined the loyalty or otherwise of a vassal states to Benin kingdom. They were also the means by which the Oba legitimized the rulers in the vassal states. The “emblem of authority” or “staff of office” sent by Oba Osemwende (c.1816) to king Akintoye of Lagos in the course of the 1850s symbolized the Oba’s hegemony over Lagos and the legitimization of the Akintoye’s reign over his people. The acceptance of this emblem implied the King of Lagos’ recognition of the over-lordship of the Oba of Benin; with the obligation of annual tributes to Benin (A.F.C. Ryder, 1977, p.14)." 5 Likes 3 Shares |

OKAIDUN: Oga, enough of your revisionist history, Oyo empire was never a confederacy because it controlled all the units under it until the decline in its power which is common to most empires like Mali, Ghana and Songhai. To have called anybody Oba confirmed the fact that Oranmiyan, the first Alaafin of Oyo established Benin Kindgom. Intermarriages is why Yoruba is having Omowumi and Itsekiri is having Omawumi, please try another logic, you are free to believe whatever you want to but the issue Oba Yewande or Osewande to Akintoye is too pedestrian. Yoruba owns the word "Oba" and anybody using it has a link with the Yorubas. |

MENELIIK:Itsekiri and Olukumi are yoruba or yoruboid groups, They have Yoruba name because they are Yorubas not because of OYo kingdom. the only reason you have Yorubas in delta state,is the same reason you have Aniocha, Ika ,Ukwuani, and Oshimili which are Igboid groups, the same reason you have Usen in Edo state a yoruboid group is the reason you have Igbanke an Igboid group. They are big tribes and they are seen everywhere. Did Igbos evolve an empire No. And also the interpretation of the name was flawed, it is an Edo name.Osewende- it means My God does not fail. After having more than 35 Esan and Bini mothers, The Edo blood in him compare to the Yoruba is 90 to 10, he is just as Edo as I an aborigine, or even more Edo than Obaseki who his patriarch migrated just 300 years ago. What he has that can be refered to as Yoruba is his paternal ancestor Oranyan of over 800 years ago and the Oba title that stuck. The Oba is part and parcel of the Bini race, He is the very fulcrum that drives our existence, the pillar and the representation for what Bini stand for. A man who his ancestor migrated 8hundred years ago to Benin cannot be said to be a foreigner by those who were not alive as at the time he migrated here. We received other migrations too recent ones even, from stock who are very proud of the Bini ethnicity, the Oba himself Identifies as Bini not yoruba very proud Bini at that. That is what Hubbard meant when he said, “the Oba was not only the civil head of the state; he was also the religious base as well. He was in fact, regarded as a divine person who in himself summed up the whole of the race… The argument was not about if the ruling house was not Yoruba by ancestry, the argument was that Lagos was under Benin empire and Benin collected tribute from her as a Overlord as we have seen from that excerpt. "The products of the blacksmith guilds were also means by which the Oba determined the loyalty or otherwise of a vassal states to Benin kingdom. MENELIIK: Lol. What do you even understand by the word Kingdom. Let me cull something from Wikipedia so I can put it in better perspective "At its height, Benin dominated trade along the entire coastline from the Western Niger Delta, through Lagos to the kingdom of Great Accra (modern-day Ghana).[ It was for this reason that this coastline was named the Bight of Benin. The present-day Republic of Benin, formerly Dahomey, decided to choose the name of this bight as the name of its country. Benin ruled over the tribes of the Niger Delta including the Western Igbo, Ijaw, Itshekiri, Ika, Isoko and Urhobo amongst others. It also held sway over the Eastern Yoruba tribes of Ondo, Ekiti, Mahin/Ugbo, and Ijebu. It also conquered what eventually became the city of Lagos hundreds of years before the British took over in 1851." |

Firstcitizen: I laugh in Swahili, Kingdom is lower than an Empire in all ramifications, also anybody can put any information on Wikipedia, just like it puts Kwara in South West which is not true. Benin republic is pronounced "Bene" and not Benin just like Niger republic is not the same Niger state in Nigeria. War conquests and dominance was reported about Oyo empire, Benin only had cultural influence some of the tribes around her and that Benin conquer Lagos, please stop it, this is not beer parlour discussion 1 Like |

MENELIIK:go and read, the Binis had more war of conquest than OYo by a mile and her empire lasted far more than OYo and as can be seen from that excerpt above Lagos paid tribute to Benin. Your tears and emotions will not save you |
