I am telling you what the law is. We know they dont follow it in real life the point is to tell you that by law all these traditional rulers are symbolic and have no legal power. As with most things Nigeria, we go about our daily lives ignoring the law and the law turns a blind eye until the day you fall foul of the authorities and the authorities decide to enforce the law. Go and ask Former Emir Sanusi. none of them is bigger than Emir of kano!!!!

If you check on Youtube, you'll find a video where the former kano gov, Rimi, talks about how little the power the Emir of Kano has, and how he can be removed easily. Sanusi's dad was removed. Please try and find any similar video by an Edo governor. if you can.

show me the one of ooni of ife or Alaafin of oyo (who was demoted) or Sultan of Sokoto...(who by the way was removed). what a stupid argument!!! So Only Obas where there is a video on youtube by the governor or a public statement by the Governor can be removed? is this how you got grades in school? is this yor idea of critical thinking and logical flow? It is the same law that applies to Emir of kano that applies to Oba of benin and ALL traditional rulers. No Oba in Nigeria is safe, all Obas can be removed, All Obas lost soveireignty in its legal sense when they surrended or were conquered by the British.

Under no circumstances as Alaafin ever over rated or rank than OONI. We all know history, all Yoruba are descendant of Oduduwa and Oduduwa stool is sitted on by OONIRISA. So how is Alaafin greater than OONI.

you do not know your History then. In fact if you delve into the the history of the yorubas, many historians suggest the Ooni is not really the son of Oduduwa but the son of his traditional priest or his concubine depending on which version you read. The real heir to Oduduwa was Oranmiyan, the last son who came back from war (all the elder brothers had gone to establish Kingdoms over yoruba land as is the tradition of ancient Kingdoms, only to find the powerful fetish priest to Oduduwa the Ooni-orisa on the throne and unwilling to engage him in a spiritual fight, left Ife to set up his Kingdom in Oyo and left his staff of office Opa Oranmiyan behind in Ile-ife (that still stands today) as a symbol of his lineage and authority. Up until the recently the Alaafin was recognised as the superior King. It is Awo that made the modern day Ooni superior to the Alaafin because of local politics in the Western region. Adesoji Aderemi was an AG supporter and the Alaafin was a supporter of Akintola. The reason why he who is King of ife is given the status he is given is because Ife is the cradle of all yorubas. Just like He who is president of the US is regarded as the most powerful man irrespective of the person occupying the post or how he got there. But traditionally, those who know their history know that the Allafin is the real daddy!!! In fact technically speaking by true Royal lineage, (i.e by descendancy from the 1st son, and his 1st son etc etc ) the most direct and senior King in yoruba land is neither in oyo or ife ( I cant remember which town it is again...possibly ila orangun or something like that..dont quote me) Have you ever wondered the origin/ meaning of the word Oonirisa? even those who claim that the Ooni is superior will tell you according to them that the 1st ooni was the son of Oranmiyan....but Oranmiyan was the 1st Alaafin. The fact that he left his staff behind should suggest to you that Oranmiyan left ife. it is on record the kingdoms established by his elder brothers so if the elder brothers left ife and Oranmiyan left Ife...who became Ooni? Dont forget illegitimate Conquerors tend to rewrite history to favour themselves. Drug dealers, establish legitimate businesses to cover up their past, people with illict wealth launder their money to make it look clean. If an illegitimate man ascended the throne in Ife his descendants are not going to tell you their progenitor was illegitimate...are they? There are many Oonis that have been chased out of Ife over the years. Reading yoruba history in depth would suggest the throne in ife is probably one of the most bastardised thrones in yoruba land because many Oonis were over the years expelled and sent packing....by whom and who took the seat by what legitimacy? I have never read anywhere where an Alaafin was sent packing from Oyo Kingdom until Awo dethroned the current Alaafin's father and sent him to Lagos. that tells you the alaafin lineage is likely to be more pure.

The late Erudite Nigerian History professor Akinjogbin wrote "on the whole it can be said that the stature of the Ooni of ife increased during colonial rule compared to what it had been" it is no surprise when a whole Ooni of ife served as a governor of western region under the colonial reign of Queen Elizabeth Of England, served a federal minister under the colonial reign of Geirge Vi . Just think and digest the implications of these for a minute. The reason a whole Ooni served under a colonial Kingdom was simply because Ife and the Ooni wasnt that recognised before Aderemi and his aim was to get recognition which he suceeded in doing by doing his masters/ biddings. Infact according to "Prior to his installation as the 49th Ooni on September 2, 1930, at the age of 40, Ife was a small town whose reputation was limited to the mythical belief of it being the cradle of mankind, according to the Yoruba people." the narrative of ife changed under Aderemi because he was prepared to (....you call it what you want) not only to an empire than Conquered his own kingdom but to Awo a cicilian elected leader. Are those the traits of a superior King of noble ancestry or someone with an inferiority complex....you tell me? A so called supreme King served His majesty/hermajesty's government for as a colonised country as a paid employee for 12 years as Member, Legislative Council of Nigeria 1946- 1951, Member of the Nigerian Federal House of Representatives 1952-1954, Minister in the Central Government- 1952- 1954, Governor (Western Region of Nigeria) – 1960-1962...all of this while enthroned as Ooni of ife. Are these the traits of a 1st class King? Compare that with Alaafin who dared to speak his mind at the risk of dethronement. Who of the 2 would you say displayed the traits of nobility?

As CHinua Achebe famously said: the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter. Whoever is on the throne now or then can tell his story as he wishes and is likely to be believed over time because after all he occupies the throne. But man must also use his common sense. Like i said if all the sons of OOni went to establish Kingdowns and his last son oranmiyan went to establish oyo...who became Ooni? Why did he leave Ife if he was the presumed heir to the throne as a famous warrior? why did he leave his staff behind?

i suggest you read up.

In reality a king has more dignity and authority than the governor but tradition has been missed up. The governor can not dethrone the king where thing are done traditionally

Nigeria is a funny country. Behind the king is a picture of the current governor (by law his boss). By law every King needs permission of the local govt chairman before he can leave his Kingdom. A local govt chairman is a boy to a governor, A governor can dethrone a King and here is a Governor (of another state) bowing down before a King under the guise of upholding tradition.

who are we fooling? We really have messed ourselves up.

Traditional monarchies effectively ended when these Kings and their Kingdoms were conquered by the British. The only reason they continued to exist on paper is because the british needed them and their authority for indirect rule through them. The reality they exist today because they are propped up after they were conquered and exist today by extension through the grace of the government and so they play to the tune of the government or they are removed. You cannot be conquered and be forming kingdom again. Thats why in reality many dont take them seriously or show them any respect except the token homage and very often even they themselves dont respect themselves. What is a King without a Kingdom, a King without power, a king without an army, a king without a government....a King without land!! At least the british keep the pretense by having the Queen as head of government etc etc

I am not sure you are student of history as you claim, if you are you will realise that there has been like 5 Oonis before Oranmiyan become Ooni in ife, also if i am to follow your history. It means Benin Senior Oyo cause Oranmiyan became Kings in Benin and left his son there to be kings after him then later left for Oyo to established what is called OYO today. At first, He went to Ife and realise there is King ruling and came to established Oyo and after Ife King died and he came back to become 6th Ooni of ife.

Moreso, i have read in history how Alaafin Ajaka was a toy to King of Owu kingdom and Oyo was invaded several times and he was put in prison and later came to be rescue by his brother SANGO, who later become King after him.

Also if you read history very well you will know that Oyo Mesi was invaded by Fulani and Alaafin was dispose with help of the then Aare Ona Kankanfo (Afonja). So where Oyo is now is a New Oyo. The old Oyo is around Tapa, Bariba and Kogi. Go and learn your history very well.

That is reason they called old OYO (OYO ILE) and new Oyo (OYO IMESI).

THE ONLY KING THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN DETHRONED OR REMOVED OR WAGE WAR AGAINST IS (OONI OF IFE). So if you have any concrete gazette to back your write up. I am waiting.
