I never realised what car horns were meant for until I went to university in England – Reno Omokri

A Nigerian human rights activist and lawyer, Bemigho Reno Omokri has revealed when he realised what car horns are meant for, WonderTV Media reports.

Posting on his Instagram, Reno disclosed that he never knew that car horns are meant for emergencies until he went to a university in England.
He said when he was in Nigeria, he thought a car horn was meant to make the car in front of the driver move faster or it was meant to call the gateman to open the gate.

Reno stated that, in Nigeria, people use car horns to greet.

“It was not until I went to university in England that I realised car horns are meant for emergencies. Throughout my time in Nigeria, I thought car horns were meant to make the car in front of you move faster, or to call the gateman to open the gate. In fact, in Nigeria we even use car horn to greet. I had a neighbour who used his car horn like a talking drum. Po po pom was ‘how are you’. He even used it to call his children to the car. One pom was for his first horn. Two poms was for the second, and so on. So many things we need to unlearn in Nigeria!”

Pressing vehicles hurn to alert another vehicle is also for emergency and never out of place.

Very correct!. In Europe, one can stay for 6 months without hearing the bleep of a vehicle's horn. The only horn/noise one will hear is siren from ambulances on medical evacuation.

You are told this in driving school. It's not just for emergency but to be used in a life threatening situation

I realised car horns makes most Nigerians drive recklessly.
One day I went for a function ,my car horn was very Okay.. immediately after the function, I entered the car only to find out the horn is dead .

I thought of how to drive on the road with all the bike , Keke and other road users,I felt like parking the car,on a second thought, I zoom off.

I couldn't imagine that I drove this car without horn extra carefully back home...
I drove it again without horn for two days because my schedule was very tight to go see an electrician.

I never believed I could drive so carefully..

After the incident, I concluded that we abuse car horn in Nigeria.

Not on Nigerian roads.

Bikes and keke napep people wont allow this work.

A car without horn on naija Road,na sure death. Broken or missing Side mirror gan sef na big risk,talkless of no horn. Truth! I traveled abroad and on a busy road I didn't hear a vehicle or bike horn, I asked my guy, "you sure sey all the cars wey dey for this country get horn? Abi their horn don spoil". My brother sometimes it's good to travel out to a sane country and come back.

And we communicate a lot here in Nigeria not like those dead people over at Europe, who live in graves.

Here, the louder the horn the better. So you can intimidate others wella.
Even some bike people connect trailer horns on their bikes. When you hear the horn, you will almost enter bush only to turn & see ordinary bike.

Car horn is as important here as the break and it's used interchangeably.

Wrong! The car horn is used for many things including calling attention to other road users for so many things. At least we watch films and same applies even in UK & USA for those that have not travelled.
Has he just realized this when he went to school in UK, after leaving in USA for several years.

Car horns may have been made originally for emergency situations in other countries, but in Nigeria the situation is different for obvious reasons. Just like we "imported" democracy and (mis)use it so are different other things. Don't use your car horn here to your peril

The govt should order horns to be disabled in all vehicles. That will help reduce noise pollution considerably.
