Why did they decide to sit back? Remember, these English players are all world class, playing for some of the top clubs in the PL.

The England back 4 at the Euros was Man City(RB) Man City(CB), Man Utd(CB), Man Utd(LB) - all these players played in the final of UEFA competitions at club level few weeks before the Euros.

So why did England sit back against part-time farmers from Italian league? Scoring a goal early should have gingered Southgate and his boys to go out and get more. Shaw scored within the first 2 mins in the final - why didn’t that easy goal inspire the team to get more goals?

England didn’t try getting more because they knew they would be dismembered by the Italian side. They knew the goal was just a fluke and they would lose emphatically if they got out of their shell to get more goals.

England manager knew the Italians(Serie A dudes aka Farmers ) were technically superior.




This is a ridiculous point.

Every player in each position in that English team were the best English players in their respective positions- likewise Italy.

Lukaku, Ronaldo, Zlatan, Dybala, Lautaro Martinez, etc also played in Serie A last season and they didn’t represent Italy at the Euros.

Therefore, the Serie A players that represented Italy at the Euros weren’t also the best players in their positions in Serie A.



That’s the only metric one can use. The best league should be producing the best national team especially when there’s now a mandatory quota for home grown players.

However, England with their most prestigious league hasn’t been able to win any trophy at the national team level in more than 50 years. Maybe, just maybe the league isn’t as strong as reported by the hyperbolic British media.




English league is the richest and its a natural reaction for players to follow the money. Wan Bissaka earns £90,000 a week and cannot trap the ball with a single touch.

The average European player is looking at him and ringing his agent to get him to the PL as soon as possible. The easiest places to make money on the planet always have the largest draw of people. This is why Lagos is hyper-populated in Nigeria. It’s where the money is.
