I told my contractor to use the nylon in order to save on wood but he totally refused. I know it is because my project is owner provides materials term. Wood price is very high now and this is how so much money have been spent on wood (Two storey building !) His excuse is that, the money I am trying to save now, I will spend during plastering as it would require more cement. In addition, he said the plastering might not hold strong and risk coming off after a while.
I have seen you do it here perfectly on several occasions and I am wondering if there is any secret to this,

There is something I want to start on a land and I am torn between a decent 3-bed bungalow and a mini duplex suggested by my woman.

Cost and simplicity is making me to tilt toward the simple 3 bed bungalow.

The rods you see on the ground there cost over 2m. Decking costs are still being calculated, but it might be very high considering what building materials are being sold for now.

We are not even talking of cement, granite and other things use in decking. It will be up to N5m at the end.

My take is that it's always good to use a nylon polythene sheeting whenever doing a decking, except the owner of the house objects due to the budget. The nylon spread serves 3 purposes,

1. It serves to separate the concrete cast from the wood underneath, making it possible that this wood will not soak water and cement, making the wood remain almost like new, the wood will be reused a second or even third time.

2. The nylon under a newly cast concrete slab serves to prevent the fast draining of water from under a decking slab. This aids the moisture retention of a decking slab, and this is very good for the curing process of the new decking.

3. The nylon sheet also serves to prevent the loss of concrete through gaps that exist between boards placed on the platform. This saves concrete by an estimated 1%, not much but still something.

4. That the under of the decking comes out smooth is a non issue, I have plastered over 30 under decking slabs which was done with a nylon sheet and is very smooth like bottle. I never had issues of cement falling and the work came out very nice.

I am typing this message standing on the top of nylon sheeting we spread on this decking yesterday evening.
