Ekealterego: Interesting.. In my own area of Anambra state, we have villages with IRU, URU and UMU prefixes. These villages are usually super ancient especially within the NRI clans. In Enugwu-Ukwu there is URUNNEBO, while in Enugwu-agidi there is IRUNNEBO. In Enugwu-Ukwu there is UMUOKPALAERI while in Nawfia there is IRUKPALERI. Obviously the Nawfia variation must have started with IRUOKPALAERI, but over the centuries, they've shrunk it down to IRUKPALERI In Nnobi there is UMUAGU while in neighbouring Nnewi there is URUAGU. All those prefixes are euphemisms for DESCENDANTS OF. Of course IRU still means FACE, and UMU still mean CHILDREN or even DESCENDANTS OF. 1 Like |

Walkee: Ok. I understand better now. True. There is a Town in Abia North at the boundary between Abia and Akwa-Cross River. The town is named Nkporo. Nkporo means Buffalo in Ibibio language. The people were given the name by their Ibibio neighbors because they had many fights with their Ibibio neighbors when they first settled there and the Ibibios remarked that they fought like Bufallos hence gave them the name. The people had since retained the name as their town name, even though the name is Ibibio and the people are Igbos. By the way, are you from Ika? 5 Likes |

Ekealterego: Ok. Thanks. I was just trying to determine if Ufu/Uru/Uhu has something to do with origin of a town, ie where they sprouted, as in "ifu" to germinate/sprout. |

kmcutez:If no one speaks Igbo in your village in Ndokwa East then you can forget about having any extension in Ndoni because there's no single Isoko community in the ONELGA, Rivers state. Ndoni speaks only Igbo just like Egbema in the same LGA. Ogba has some more Igbo dialects that are a bit divergent but is still Igbo. No single trace of Isoko. 1 Like |

Igboid:Nporo people are still stubborn and incredibly strong till today although a bit like the less successful in business and till today... They are part of the warrior clans like Abiriba, Ohafia, Edda, and Abam from around that area. Although the Abiriba and many Ohafia communities have had very very great people like Eni Njoku, Ebitu Ukiwe, Ojo Maduekwe, Kalu Idika Kalu, with loads of people in entertainment like uche Jumbo, Ruggedman, J. Martins etc. Nporo seems to be a little behind but their socialization and pride in their culture are just as strong as anywhere in that area. Nkporo people In Aba or even Lagos, usually live together in an area and I bet you other groups are afraid of them cos you better not mess with one of them but on the other hand, they are very very cool... The Nporo people will travel in chartered "Gwongworo", "911" lorries in those days, (I do not know about the last 10 years) with their mattress. bed frames and pillows and buckets, etc (I did find this hilarious). The Abiriba brothers do find these heavy logistics traveling a lil bit embarrassing since those ones are usually richer on average. LOL Some of the Cross-Riverians definitely have some Akwa-Ibom or Cross-River mixing... In Ehugbo (Afikpo) some of their names are just unique to the place (Idu, Eleje, Ibiam, Igariwey, Otti, Ukpabi, Ukpai etc). Abirba people claim to be from somewhere from Bahumono and of course Aro, Abam and other Igbo mixing, (There are a lot of places called Ebiriba or Ebiribiri in Akwa and Cross)... They have the unique culture and dancing and pride in their autonomy but one thing that contrasts these people with the Igbos in Rivers for example is that they are some of the most passionate about the Igbo consciousness... They see their culture as a contribution., not only to themselves but to the Igbo Nation and they will tell you any opportunity they get. 4 Likes |

Igboid: Calling people clannish simply because they want to preserve their culture is very ignorant and inconsiderate. This line of thought usually come from people who have little pride in their culture or liberal minded. As you know , I am a purist and want to preserve the Anambraic culture. However, that doesn't diminish my strong and unflinching loyalty and patriotism to Igbo land and her people. I have noticed one thing about my fellow Igbo here , whenever I expresses my Anambra pride you guys mistake it for superior mentality or that I am dividing Igbo land. This is a very bad misconception. From Anioma -Anambra-Enugu-Imo-Rivers-Abia-Ebonyi Igbo culture varies and it is your duty to protect your own culture including dialects. You will never catch me dead writing Igbo Izugbe. My thinking is that language evolve naturally like what happened in Enugu where they literally speak Anambraic dialects and Southern Anambra who are fast changing into Anambraic speaking patterns. It's better than to sit in a room, manufacture language and force it down our throat, in the case of Izugbe. If you want my support and continued alliance , please respect my culture. Walkee:Don't be angry, you were not clear enough with the quote you referenced first and it is ambiguous... You have to know that on Nairaland, there are many people who rather come to attack the Igbos for no reason rather than contributing constructively... I understand what you meant with your post. However, Agbor is not an Edo word... There are 100s of communities and villages bearing Agbor either as a suffix, prefix or stand-alone name on the eastern side of the Niger... The problem is that most people live in a bubble.. Many examples exist, from Agbonta, Agboukwu, etc. 5 Likes |

IDENNAA: Sorry nwanne. I didn't say it in derogatory way. There is nothing wrong with being a little clannish. People like you are important to keep people like me in check, if not the entire dialectical diversity that enriches Igbo language that exists in a dialectical continuum will be lost. I respect every Igbo culture. And I fully understand your stand. Anyi but ofu, Ide Nna! 5 Likes |

kmcutez: The Ada Irri sef is most likely Igbo descended. It is not confusing for me. From my view they are all Igbo communities originally. The movement of Isoko people into the area may have brought about some confusion as to identity of each family. A honest exhaustive trace backwards should reveal who is descended from the original Igbo inhabitants and who is descended from the Isoko long time immigrants. However a simple conclusion is that Obiaka and the rest communities across the river in Rivers state are all Igbo people, mumsy included. Proving Ada Irri is Igbo or otherwise will take more investigation from me. Though on first glance it's obviously Igbo . Perhaps your dad can explain further. |

kmcutez: There is nothing to be confused about. This is common with "Igbo" tribes at the border... Similar dynamics happen in Arochukwu... they even have some Ibibio villages, some are billingual in Igbo and Ibibio. By the way, "Ada Irri" is 101% an Igbo word....or can you tell the meaning or etymology of the word in Isoko? |
