Good day nairalanders

I wanna seek advise on behalf of my parent. My dad is a road side mechanic while Mum is a petty trader. Dad is 55yrs while Mum is 52yrs. I wanna ask what type of Business can I set up for my parent based on the Economy growth of the country.
I plan setting up a mini mart for my mum earlier buy after asking my sister about it she said it’s not a good business in terms of profitability.
Kindly help to suggest what type of Business I can set up for both of them so I can start working on it.

bros one your dad is too young to stop being active. Do you want him to die young? Since he is a mechanic, in my opinion advice him to get apprentices he can train, in that way he does not have to bear the burden of all the work. He can stroll to the shop and not under pressure to go there.

Working or being engage keeps him both physically and mentally young. Let him focus on training others for now later you can open parts business for him maybe in his mid 60s

Your parents are relatively young, not up to official retirement age. Why not set up a proper mechanical workshop for your dad and a wholesale drinks (fizzy drinks- Coca Cola/Pepsi/biggie, juice and water) dealership for your mom if you have the money.

Goodyness spoke my mind. Build a proper mechanic workshop for your dad. It would be easier for him to manage it since he's already into the business.

A car wash alongside a mechanic workshop sounds ok for your dad.

If your mum can handle a restaurant, that is lucrative.

At that age it is hard for them to learn a new business.

Give your mum that mini mart. She’s an experienced trader already. It’s just a bigger space.

As for your dad, he needs a good space for him to practice his vocation. I’d suggest a modern mechanic shop or a spare parts shop.

There are alot things to choose from
A mini mart fr mum
Auto spare parts shop for dad
An animal farm for dad, with one assistant.
A restaurant for mum with hired cooks

Just look around them, the idea will pop up

Depending on cash available. You can set up a drinks Depot for them to both manage.

Since your dad has experience in vehicle repair. Why not work on an advance auto shop that he can manage with experience and staffs supporting. While your mum is she doesn't do any business before, that mini mart is the easiest she can do now. Nobody shld tell you it's not profitable, ask those ibo traders that a whole family depends on a shop, just that it needs discipline since the money comes in bit.

You have rejected every advice given, since you know what you want why did you seek advice in the first place. Do what is in your mind.

This is golden advice.

Let them continue on their chosen path but enhance it for them.

And remain in the background as their support and guarantor if they initially struggle with new ideas etc.

As someone said - you be better pikin

Transport business

You said your dad was a mechanic

Omo imagine driving a car and you are a mechanic with so much experience omo that car will make so much money on the road and incur less money on repairs

Good day nairalanders...

Allow me a moment to give you the best advise you will receive here:

I've been in your shoes before though it had to do with me trying to help friends develop themselves by introducing them to my line of wor, a nd every single time, it ended badly.

I later realized it was because I somewhat "forced" them into my line of work, while thinking I was helping them. They in turn, were attracted by the lure of easy money.

So instead of asking people here, it's better that you ask your dad and mom what they have interest in and help them. Don't ask the people here.

if you set up a mini-mart for your mom, when she would have preferred a bigger shop, the business is likelier to collapse.

For your mom I can say start up a food business "interstate"she buy from the north and transport it to the south likewise vise and ad for "epa" that man go stubborn ooo. for your dad I'll suggest you ask him what he want more like he dream business and since he's a mechanic I'll suggest u push him into vehicle parts Open a shop and stuck it up for him..
Re: Work Advice Needed For My Parent. by BullyBullies: 11:17am On Oct 15, 2021
I think it's better to ask them what kind of business they would like you set up for each of them. If you secretly set up something they don't like, it may not last last and you would want to secretly set up another one for them again. If you ask them, they can tell you what they feel they can control, manage and ultimately love doing; since you have the money to do it for them. Bless you.

Open a mini distributorship business like indomie or drinks for both of them in a good location. I mean buying in bulk directly from companies.

In front of the house you build for them. Erect 2 shops. One for Dad to sell pure water and all soft drinks. While 2nd shop fro mum to sell foodstuffs, provisions, recharge cards etc. They will thank you for life.

This is what I'm saying. Please heed this advice. Don't attempt changing their business or "upgrading" them. You will do them more harm than good.
