Hahhaaha. Very true though. It helped with the shortlisting process. The number of applicants dropped sporadically after the AMs were disqualified. I am sure my boss has been doing this, I am only noticing it now because that applicant caught my attention and I followed up on him.

Well, if you read me clearly, you will see the decision wasn’t mine but his and yes, he gives it to me sometimes. However, I am not an intern and it’ll take more than a single grammatical error, let alone the wrong use of adverbs for me to be dropped. Definitely not by his sole decision.

We are not forming perfect, but some errors just stare at you in the face, making it hard to ignore. “Am” is one of them. Thanks for the correction.

Any company that is so rigid is not a company meant to norture and grow young minds, your company probably did the applicants a favor, imagine working under such an atmosphere? Tueh!

The reason your boss can get away with such is that

1. Most jobs today don't really require exceptional people. In other words, any cog on the wheel can fill in. So it really doesn't matter who you pick for the job.


If the guy truly offered something spectacular to the company, he wouldn't even have to do an aptitude test.

2. There are so many people available so you can use arbitrary standards to select people.

Nigerians can abuse their position; Hmm! I'm pretty sure your boss is not a grammarian. He/she makes mistakes as well.

It annoys me too frankly speaking.. errors like that shouldn't leave elementary class with any serious-minded person.

How will you say "am" instead of "I am" or "I'm".. b0mb dey your head ni?

I know most people don't get shortlisted for or even fail interviews cos of silly grammatical blunders like that. Really annoying.

It's actually not a simple mistake. It's one of the developments from social media cos of limited time and space for words. I had to read over any writeups then before submission cos someone of them found a way of entering our real writeups forgetting that we had left the social media environment. Always watch out for cos, pls, am etc

Being smart and intelligent are 2 different things entirely.

there a difference between American English and British English. We speak British English and not the other way around. The British consider American English to be pidgin, so Elon musk can write whatever he feels like, he's correct judging from American standard.

I remember my essay competition in high school. I was almost dropped because I wrote letter "i" in small letter instead of capital letter. "Whenever it stands alone, it should always be written in Capital" Says my english teacher.

Truth be told, if Professors are perfect, why need an editor for their book publishing? If English was perfect, why do English themselves study English as a course. That means the world revolves around continuous knowledge acquisition. If the boss knows it all, he should be contesting with the Jeff and the rest, yet those make mistakes. It is just a common thing in our society to expect faults than capacity.

You seem to be in a none structured work environment. If you were, your "boss" wouldn't be reviewing essays of interns.

Also your boss must suck a lot to work with. Good for the interns they didn't have to put up with such an insufferable person.

They are interns. Not English professors. Also why would his personal irritation overshadow logical thinking?


A true test of competency is not graded on just writing essays. Character checks, tenancity, ability to be able to make mistakes and develop are key areas. The weighted average of these with communication skills and appearance is what should form the basis of hiring people.

To not consider other skills and see this as a learning opportunity for the interns is like someone who has a huge ego issue and definitely should not be managing people.

He should pull up his evaluation file from when he was an officer/Analyst and let's see how good he was and never made a mistake. Mtswwwheeewww

That error speaks more of your boss's character than of the young mans. Sometimes what might be the criteria or criterion in deciding who stays or who goes might just be a mistake as insignificant as this. While I understand how much you wanted this guy to get the job. I think your boss acted on instinct and gut and sometimes that's what CEO's need when the chips are down. I once texted a friend saying I am greatful and the next thing he said was if you took all the pain to type greatful wouldn't it be the same time it would take to just type the correct form of the word "grateful". Besides greatful has the exact same letters as grateful but one is wrong and the other is right. I guess my point is the young guy will look back at this experience and learn an important lesson. Which is anything worth doing is worth doing right
