This language map shows what the coast may have looked like perhaps a thousand years ago. In the map there are 47 languages scattered across the coast. Out of that 47 about 42 were either partly formed from Igbo and other languages or have Igbo descent. This may support the fact that many other tribes met the Igbos on the coast and thus were influenced by the enduring Igbo tongue as they stayed close to the Igbos. Also many were formed by one Igbo ancestor and another non Igbo ancestor. Check Yakurr ethnicity. If Igbo impacted so much languages it is likely they were the biggest tribe around. Much much much bigger than Nigeria wants people to believe. There is reason to believe that the Igbo tribe occupied an area far and wide into present day Yorubaland. And a recent research by an Igbo linguist Maazi Ogbonna Okoro revealed that the Igbo area still stretches far into Kogi state to the North. If the Igbo area was so large it is only probable that they occupied the nearly the entire coastline down south. Along with the Efik people(another very old tribe). These other small tribes along the coast with languages numbering near 50 probably came around later on from external migrations. Or may have been brought by Igbos from their far journeys in other lands. There is also the possibility they existed in their area all the while with the Igbos but didn't have the vigoristy or influence of the Igbos, and the Igbo wide population spread didnt allow them grow in population much. Those who are big today absorbed a lot of Igbos and it shows in their large number of Igbo speakers today. 2 Likes

The only occasion that brought igbos close to the sea was slavery, when lots of igbos were shipped off the coast as chained slaves. Migration also played a crucial role in spreading their population across the neighborhood who are mostly in minorities. A large population would easily have greater influence over a few.
