And Kroos was fiercely critical of the decision to name Messi as the winner before also revealing who he voted for in his top three.

Speaking on his podcast, Kroos said: 'It's absolutely not deserved.

'There is no doubt that Messi, with Cristiano, has been the player of the last decade, but this year there should've been others ahead of him.'

Kroos said his top three were Real Madrid team-mate Karim Benzema, Lewandowski and Jorginho.

Iker Casillas, the legendary former Real Madrid goalkeeper who had some sensational battles with Messi during his career, also admitted the PSG star should not have won the prize.

The Spaniard added: 'It is increasingly difficult for me to believe in football awards.

'Messi is one of the best but you have to know who is the most outstanding player after the season. It's not that hard.'

After winning the award, Messi did acknowledge Lewandowski's achievements over the past two years and said he did 'deserve' the prize.

Messi said: 'You deserve your Ballon d'Or. Last year everyone agreed that you were the winner.

'I think France Football should give you your Ballon d'Or. You have to have it in your house.'

But it was not all criticism for Messi. Match of the Day host Gary Lineker hailed his award as a 'magnificent seven' and described him as a 'truly extraordinary footballer'.

The former England and Barcelona striker tweeted: 'It’s a magnificent seven. Congratulations to Lionel Messi on winning yet another Ballon d’Or.

'A truly extraordinary footballer and an absolute credit to the sport both on and off the pitch.'

However, football fans were also questioning why Messi was named as the winner with a large number on social media insisting it should have gone to Lewandowski or even Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

I LOVE THIS MESSI'S BALLON D'OR WIN SO MUCH.

He did just quite the minimum to clinch it.

I remember those days Ronaldo would not hit the ground running in the league. Even his fans would say league form does not matter. Then boom, CL knockout stages, Ronaldo will hit braces, hattricks, and lift the CL... and then its enough for the Ballon d'or.

Meanwhile Messi would play all his life in the league, copa del rey. In fact, he will also reach the finals of major tournaments like the 2014 World Cup, and the Copa in 2014, 2015 and 2016 etc. and fall just short at the semis or quarters of the CL.

Ronaldo fans then would say CL is all that matters. I still remember their comments here on NL. 2017 was my worst year here on NL. Ronaldo fans bullied we Messi fans like hell.

The organisers have a voting procedure for selecting the winner.
They should tell us if this procedure was not followed instead of all this online fuss.

they got tired of releasing statement every stating the criteria. it's on their website. but the agendists won't want to look at that before forming agenda. They just pained Messi won again. To me if the award is truly awarded based on individual performance over the course of the year. Messi would have been winning almost every year. The organizers are even tweaking the criteria to give others a chance

Football has come a long way and it's still going a long way too... Guys, the best is yet to be seen.

A lot of people here are just coming at CR7 fans but it’s bigger than that. Messi doesn’t deserve this one and he knows. Lewandoski is there. He won the champions league, uefa super cup. Golden boot for his league. He won his league and other cups. For the fact that he was denied this award last season he should have won it now. This season he is way ahead of Messi.
