Always breaking while washing it, so after enough beating invented a way to clean it, using dry tissue paper and it never broke again.

Can't tell how many, but I remember my brothers and I using masking tape to hold together a few that were not so badly broken. It was easier washing it than fixing it back successfully without the frightening sound of broken glass. Every successful operation was always rewarded with a bright, sparkling illumination.

To be honest and if we are honest our lifes as Nigerians has considerable improved. The core reason parents act out aggression that way was down to the fact that they were honestly struggling to meet up. Every mistake wm was a cost to their pockets. plus you.

Ours was a room and palour all 9 of us. It's was not easy. Many of us now are barely 30.. with cars and living in spaciouse 2 bedrooms. Yet we stick and stone Nigeria for being too hard on us. I wonder what we mean. History must be contextualize to derive true meaning from things. To think children got beaten for a lamp glass barely fiur hundren naira or less back then should capture for us how far we have progress as a persons in this not so good country. Always thank God for what you have and not what you still chasing.

Take a snap shot of your life keep past pictures and documents in a moment you will be giving to the truth. Only then will our hearts be fully greatfull to God and country. Until then we are what we are.

I didn't break any, but cracked some. When you let go of the hook, it snaps hard and can crack the glass. Or sometimes turn the glass upside down and try to force it to fit into the lantern

Those day when you commit crime/break stuffs(Plates, Cups, aquarium, louvers) before dad/mum return from work.

There's always this special people we return to for protection, they'll come beg for us.

But some parents can still be mean, in the midnight, you will just hear 'tap tap tap' on your body.

You should advise her not to do that. It's not ideal to beat children. There are many other ways to discipline kids.

Eyin Lantern, i broke like 4.

You need to wash/clean for brightness every weekend.

1st one, i got a warning. 2nd i got a warning with ear pull.

3rd one, i was asked to lie down on the

Broke the 4th/last in 1998, can't forget.

Ran away from home to Baba ile Keta to come help me beg.

But later got the logic, will sit on the floor and wash in a big bowl filled with water.
I used it throughout primary and secondary school. We learnt the tricks on how to wash it after several falls. Sometimes we even used the cracked glasses in school and just cover part of the broken part with paper or strong leaves.

We call it mpalaka/ otenikang.

There is a bigger and brighter one called “ Tili”. I don’t know the real name but my dad would pump it and it will get brighter and brighter until the kerosine inside is made to “turn to gas”. Very bright but expensive then.

This is supposed to be a funny post but it just brings back horrifying memories. For kids like me that were in a boarding school since primary two in a different state man,our seniors beat the shit out of us every night cause of this once there's no electricity. I mean why will you beat me for not having a lantern ? Is it not for me but no these beasts will whip you so hard you won't even be able to get up to pee and by morning when you've wet your bed you get beaten like shit again. This post just triggered my PTSD...

I don’t always bother myself
Sometimes I go stay outside till midnight but I go still collect beating early in the morning
