...To Be Completed, Commissioned Soon The rehabilitation, remodelling and equipping of the popular Vlekete Slave Market Museum in Badagry with historical artefacts have now reached over 95 per cent completion stage and would soon be commissioned by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This was disclosed recently during an assessment tour of the project by the Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Solomon Bonu, alongside the Permanent Secretary, Princess Adenike Adedoyin-Ajayi, as well as the Director of Monument Management Department, Mr. Olatunde Lawal. While noting that the museum would soon be opened for use by members of the public, Bonu stated that the approval for the rehabilitation of the Vlekete Slave Market Museum further reaffirmed the status of Badagry as a major tourism destination in Lagos State and by extension, Nigeria. According to him, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu gave approval for the Museum based on his conviction about the importance of the historical narratives behind the Vlekete Slave Market Museum in Badagry. In her contribution, Princess Adenike Adedoyin-Ajayi remarked that the Vlekete Slave Market in Badagry was adjudged to be one of the most populous slave markets in West Africa during the Slave Trade period, reiterating the commitment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to hand over the Museum for public use soon. She disclosed that when the Badagry Slave Market Museum International is completed, it will serve as a major tourism attraction for Nigerians within and outside the country and also re-enact the memory of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and its abolition several decades ago. The Director, Monument Management Department, Mr. Olatunde Lawal, commended the contractor that handled the remodelling of the museum for the quality job done and for keeping to the delivery period for the project. He said that the Managing Director of Messrs Obinjade Nigeria Limited, Mr. Ashamu Sewanu Fadipe, cooperated with the Ministry to reach the present stage of the project. Fadipe, who took the Special Adviser and other top government officials from the Ministry on a tour of the Museum, said it houses collections of notable slave relics and useful information on Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Sahara slave marketing in Badagry. He disclosed that a particular portion of the Museum has been dedicated to simulating the re-enactment of the trade experience to visitors and tourists using video presentation. They should make the statue of Seriki of Badagry exclusive. A very famous slave trader that sold 20 young ladies for one umbrella, 40 men for a gun and 10 boys for gunpowder. Badagry has unfairly suffered developmental neglect from successive governors in Lagos State. Each governor visited Badagry as election candidate to ask for votes with nothing remarkable done at the end of each four years. Badagry deserves to be opened up as tourism, vacation and hospitality hub in West Africa. Develop a proper town-plan for Badagry, build good network of roads and infrastructure, set up the beaches properly, involve investors, create areas for hotels, cinemas, night clubs, amphitheatres, amusement parks, conference centres ensure adequate security with CCTV, etc and watch Gambia crumble as tourist destination in West Africa. That place wasn't a slave market because slavery came later. Europeans had been in Africa, buying cash crops, gold, tusk and Ivory, timber and they used that place as processing and shipping port, many years before slavery. There are many such shipping ports dotted all over West Africa and other parts. Before Europeans arrived, that place must always have been a port!!. Otherwise, why did white people anchor their ships there? And how did they anchor there? Such places were originally meant for legitimate business before the Atlantic slave trade began. During slavery, they were used to process the slaves before shipping. IT WASN'T A MARKET!!!. Do you think the only and first business to happen between Europe and Africa was slavery? slavery is one of the most stupid decisions ever made by a black man. its very painful what those slaves went through in the hands of the white masters. its very degrading, and my heart still bleeds for the slaves who were sold by their brothers. this is one of the reasons the black man lost relevance in the world. The effects of the slavery still resonates through the African American here today, people who lost everything. They lost their culture, and identity and had to fight for survival. their parents were locked up and the newer generations had no direction.
