Thank you! I also thought so but the US travel docs website (https://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-niv-typefandm.asp) states at least 6 months beyond the period of stay.

Please, anyone here who got their visa even though their passport isn't valid throughout the duration of their program? I need to know whether I have to renew my passport since the US travel website states the passport must be valid throughout the duration of the program.

Hi guy I got denied under section 214b at Abuja embassy on Nov 4th.
Heres my transcript and I will be deferring my admission to properly restructure for new interview.
Vo: After greetings with the Mr Korean.
He asked me where I'm going to study.
Me: University of Findlay.
Vo: which course
Me: masters of science in environmental safety and health management.
Vo: I see you have funding how will you cover the deficit
Me: my uncle is gonna pay for me he works at yzx
VO: have you travel out of the country
Me: Yes.
He handed me the blue paper.

My observations are: I indicated that I'm single, & my last job was in Dubai which I recently quit because I have to come to Nigeria for visa. So this shows that I don't have strong ties in Nigeria like wife, job or investment.
Now in my next application for visa I want to indicate that I have married within the last 4 month, I have 7 siblings & my parents and I have a new job with my salary like 515k & will change my sponsor to my father from my uncle or can I use a company as a sponsor with the agreement of deducting 30% from my salary after coming back?

Any response

Exactly,
He would have stated one or two reasons why he was denied previously and how he was able to fix it this time. But he dint.

Hi dear, pls don’t be sad about it. I feel the woman didn’t just like you because there is nothing wrong in spending 3 months there. The same thing with me, I have been traveling to the US before but my last trip I also spent 3 months and when the guy asked me what was I doing I said went on a long vacation with my dad, that was the only time I was free before my visa expired. He now asked who I was staying with said my dads friends, not relatives( I thought I blew it here but no he just smiled and said you can have friends no problem) and that was it.

So pls try to find another date and go for the interview and don’t go too much in-depth, I feel u shouldn’t have said all the things u we’re doing there. You went for vacation and came back.

Goodluck dear

Finally, my visa got approved. After emailing them last week, as advised here, I got a mail from them the next day, saying I should drop my passport with DHL, which I did without hesitation. I collected my passport yesterday. I can't thank God enough, and I thank you all here for your advice. For those still having cases similar to mine (administrative processing), I wish you luck. From my experience, I learnt one should message them as frequent as possible so they would not forget one's case.

Please how did you compose your emails?
I also have a friend that's in same situation
Please reply thanks

Hi Tim, good evening. I need a clarification on the matter I stated above about having a valid passport throughout the duration of one's course of study. Refer to this screenshot I took from the US traveldocs website. Is it a new policy or what?

Hi,

I sincerely understand your concern as the wording on the webpage suggests that the passport should be valid at least 6 months beyond the intended period of stay in the US. I'm not exactly sure if it's a new change as the same wording are on different other "state.gov" webpages. However, up till December 23 when the embassy went on break, I know of a few folks with passports with only 9-12 months to expiration who got their visa approved without any problem. To be doubly sure, you can send an email to the embassy and they'll get back with clarification.

Your case is quite unique. There are a few things that you may need to resolve. Do you have a British passport? Given that you were born in the UK, per the UK regulations, "you're automatically a British citizen if, when you were born, one of your parents was a British citizen or settled in the UK. You can register to become a British citizen if, when you were born, neither of your parents were British citizens or settled in the UK." If you have a British passport (or if you don't, you can begin the process of getting one), then doing a PhD in the UK on the surface should be cheaper. However, since you're not resident in the UK, you'll have to pay for things such as accommodation, feeding, transportation, etc, unless you can secure a scholarship or funding that gives you funding in excess of your tuition to cover those expenses.

On the other hand, while doing your PhD in the US on the surface may look more expensive, it may actually be cheaper if you can get a PhD that offers you a full tuition waiver and a graduate assistantship that pays you a generous stipend per month.

The tricky part for the US though, is applying for a student visa. If you're applying from Nigeria using a British passport, then you'll be applying as a “Third Country National” (https://www.ustraveldocs.com/ng/ng-gen-faq.asp#qlistgen5) and you'll need to answer quite a number of questions such as, where you're resident...Nigeria or the UK? and why as a British national you're not going to the UK for your PhD or applying for your US visa from the UK, amongst other questions.

With respect to the application process, for the UK, you'll be applying as a UK citizen and not as an international student. This will preclude the need for a UK visa. For the US, you'll apply as a UK citizen, but you'll need to get a visa as you'll be considered an international student.

Ultimately, you should explore both options and see which one works best for you.

For people whose Visas were delayed, how are you coping?

I’m sincerely running out of my mind. Can’t even concentrate in other things. Have been perpetually sad since my visa was delayed. 3rd Dec.
Tried to get another date but the second EA was denied. Lagos.

And I think what’s making me feel this way is that all my friends (4) got theirs approved. Na only me remain like this.

Meanwhile my transcript

VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning

V0: You’re going to Texas A& M ?
Me: Yes

V0: what course?
Me: Masters in Business Analytics

VO: You graduated 2015, what’s your undergraduate studies?
Me: Accounting

VO: so why are you going for your masters now? After so long?
Me: I gave one explanation that I can’t even remember sef. Sincerely.

VO: are you engaged?
Me: (I think this was where I bleeped up. I said yes but that’s a lie). It was nervousness o

VO: when?
Me: Last month.

VO: sorry you’re not qualified for this visa…

My nervousness came as a result of denials flying up and down. I think I’ve already given up hope before approaching the VO when it got to my turn. About 20 people went before me, only one approval.

I’m slowly losing my mind I swear. This was not the plan o
. I know it’s not easy , I was also denied but it is just a delay . I want you to believe in God . If you are a Christian you can read this verses In the Bible .it is what strengthen me with praises . Psalm 20:4 , psalm 5:12 , Nehemiah 2:8 , Mathew 21:21 ....currently we are facing what is happening in psalm 108... we are down but you have to have faith and believe . We would sing victorious song soon .

Also, how long does it take for schools to process the I-20?

Hello,

I'm here to inquire about the required proof of funds for an F1 Visa.

My parent (mum) will be my sponsor. However, she requested to deposit the money (Cost of Appearance) in my bank account so I can have full access to it.

Is this going to be a problem? and do I still need to provide her statement of account too?

And like this, is it going to be Personal Fund or Family Fund?

Thank you.

Hi Tim,
Good day and Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Love your in-depth and concise response to questions.

I have one which I'd like clarifications on please.

Several visa interview transcripts and responses from people here seem to give the impression that one might get unfavorable visa response if you have relatives in the US. How true is that please?

My sponsor happens to be my uncle who has been resident in the US for decades. This in addition to several other cousins, uncles and aunts residing there. Will this be a problem?

Gladly appreciate your response. Thanks.

F1/F2 visa denied
Embassy Location- Abuja
COA- 31k
No Funding
Sponsor- Mum and husband

I’m married and applied with my 2 years old daughter(F2) for MsED in Educational administration as I have been working as a school administrator since I graduated in 2014 in my family owned school and my mum is retiring shortly and I will be fully in charge of the school hence the reason for my masters degree as my first degree is BSc Economics.
My daughter was crying so I was given priority and asked to leave the queue and sent straight to the Black female VO.

Interview
Black young female VO
VO: Goodmorning
Me: Hi, Goodmorning
VO: Tell me about your plans
Baby was uneasy and restless so I was trying to pacify her by shaking her on my shoulder while responding.
Me: I’m going to graduate school for my masters in Educational administration.
VO: What is the duration of your programme?
Me: 24months
VO: Continues typing then asked why this course.
Me: Im working as a school administrator in my family owned school so this will help me acquire necessary skills and knowledge required to effectively manage and administer a school as I will be taking over management of the school once Mum retires in a few years.
VO: What did you study in your first degree?
Me: Economics
VO: who is sponsoring you?
Me: My Mum will cover my tuition while my husband will cover I and my daughter’s living expenses.
VO: What do they do?
Me: My Mum is the Proprietress of the school I currently work while my husband is an auto dealer, he is into import and sales of cars here in Nigeria.
VO: Where will you be staying for the duration of your programme?
Me: Meadows Estate at bleep- it’s a school recognized off campus.
VO: Have you made arrangements for your daughter’s care?
Me: Yes, she will be cared for at child center daycare while I attend lectures.
VO: What’s the population of the school you work?
Me: Student population of roughly 959, staff strength of 36 academic and 22 non academic staffs.
VO: Is this your only child.
Me: Yes
VO: Your husbands business what year did he start?
Me: 2015
VO continues typing for awhile then picks the blue slip and handed over to me with my passport and i20
Me: Is there anything you would have needed more clarification on as you saw I was a bit distracted and unsettled with my baby crying and me trying to pacify her and answering you in between.
VO responds it’s all in the blue slip, you can reapply at a later date.

Gurus in the house, please I need advice as to what went wrong. I already deferred my admission to Fall semester and would be reapplying. I would appreciate suggestions on how to improve my application next time.

I see nothing absolutely wrong with your transcript

But what I know is that Daycare for kids in the USA is very expensive and maybe as high as $250 per week. So coupled with your tuition and living expenses, maybe the VO didn’t feel convinced that your husbands job, an auto dealer and your moms business can foot the bills. Even though your mom is the proprietress of the school, I’m sure she is on a salary yh?

Also auto dealers do not have such a stable income, they import cars and some cars can remain in their car lot for months without making sales.

I’m just assuming tho

It might be ties to home country and not funding that made them deny you.

See the kind questions wey this black woman dey ask person. Some people no go make this heaven.

Lol, I don’t know the VO’s reason for denying you

You know most of these black Americans beef we Africans

But you goofed!!! A school of 959 students cannot have just 36 academic staff. Ahn ahn

It’s too small

How can 36 Academic staffs cater for close to 1000 students

You should have said at least 102 academic staff.

I wanted to say 100, but it’s not good to use round figure, they will think you are making things up.

ShyShyBobo:

Thank you.
Hi.
Its not a problem.
Let the I-20 reflect family funds.
