Enugu metropolis is underlain by shale which is an aquitard, and borehole instability due to the shaley nature of the lithology. Running a geophysical survey before drilling, will definitely yield a good outcome on where to drill and depth to drill to. But the problem with the people is that they don't believe in spending money. I know a hotel worth millions, but there's no borehole, they buy water to refill. Drill borehole..mba.

[s]Unlike Northern politicians commission water projects for their people in cities, towns and villages..an average Eastern politician would prefer to carry some big booty bitch than do such.

Igbos ain't really smart.[/s]

You people ar fast turning this to a tradition and it will keep backfiring you people.

If I read correctly, the issue is about watee scarcity in Enugu state......What concerns other states with the issue or do you see the neighboring states complaining of water?

I took a keg intending to fetch water from nearby houses/shops/filling stations.

Omo, the way they were looking at me like I was asking for some precious stone baffled me!

Like play, I couldn't get water anywhere, i had to drive it like that till I got to a supermarket and bought bottles of water to fill the radiator.

I got to appreciate my Niger Delta where water can never be a commodity hoarded by anyone...

And they come online to chest beat all the time .

You are making excuses for government. If 1000 public boreholes are done every year since Independence, will that not have aleviated the sufferings of the masses?
And do you know that 1000 bore holes in a small geographical area like Enugu can trigger an Earthquake?

The State Government can solve this problem by invititing private investors to build and manage water corporations around the metropolis, drawing water from large Rivers and using the techniques of water harvesting.

Read my comments well, I never made any excuses for Failed leadership of government in Enugu and Nigeria in general.
I am only considering the plight of suffering individuals spending huge amount to erect a borehole for personal use.

This is why government will continuously exploit Nigerians until the end of time. When there are affluent men and women to do the job of government, why bother to work?

Enugu is relatively high, and the ground is filled with coal, hence boreholes are not as plentiful as you may find in some other cities.
Not to say things can't be done... like building a huge water reservoir/park that is fed by the Ekulu River.

That said, it's up to leadership (and the people who vote them in): Even my city Asaba, which is right next to the freaking Niger River cannot boast of potable water to its residents, yet Dubai and Israel find a way to create drinking water in the desert, from saltwater.

I just hope this wonderful city gets its water supply back on track - one of the few cities with running water in Nigeria these days.

You do know shale is a sedimentary rock right?

This implies that it would always be extensive hence never guaranteed a favourable outcome even after a geophysical survey.

You are still making excuses. Water supply anywhere in the world is a public good that is provided, protected and provisioned by government. It is never a private matter .

Where is water supply a public good in Nigeria? Individuals dig their own boreholes.

Ordinary water, you cannot provide and you have the guts to be sponsoring a terrorist organization (ipob) to distabilize the country.

You've never lived in Enugu before that's why you're talking like this. Enugu is not like Lagos that when you dig the ground, you'll see water.... and you can easily dug bore hole everywhere.

If you dig the ground in Enugu, what you'll be seeing is coal.

The water situation there is terrible.

The city Enugu, has a lot of coal deposits underneath, making it difficult and very expensive to get a good borehole. People at Oji river that I know of, don't face problem of this water scarcity.

Enugu city is closer to water bed than the rest of the state, any small well u dig will have water in it unless it's dry season, so most people there see boreholes as a waste of money until dry season hit them and they realise well is not the best.

The problem in Enugu is that an average Igbo man or rich Igbo man. As long as he can buy tanker water every months or 2 weeks he doesn't care about the community.

The day tanker will stop selling water I think that is when the solution will start showing up.

Everyone own a tank. Like me I nor fit shout. I buy my tank too. Tank is a big business here.

Some side in Enugu have water. It's just the city that is on dried land during dry sseason.

House rent very expensive.

Even though i blame Buhari for his own ineptitude, most of our state governors are failures and nobody holds them to account.

I have been to almost all the eastern states including Enugu. Enugu is a fine town, well structured and beautiful. I went to Enugu due to work.

Water is really an issue. I wish the issue of water could be sorted out Enugu would be better for it.

Topography of the area determines the accessibility of water via borehole.

A former Head of Geology Department, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Smart Obioara, also aligned with both Udeogu and Ndukwe’s position. He confirmed that the geology of a particular area must be considered before a borehole drilling process commences. According to him, Enugu generally is a very bad place to drill for water and you can hardly find the rocks that can store water, although people have been making efforts and drilling wells.

“If you don’t have the necessary rock, what is called an aquifer, which can contain and also be able to release water in abundance, it will be hard. If you are not within the water table, the hope of getting water is slim and even if you do, it will dry up easily,” he explained.

Aquifer refers to when a water-bearing rock readily transmits water to wells and springs. The rate of recharge is not the same for all aquifers, and that must be considered when pumping water from a well.
Tah, if u are referring to Nsukka, yes, cuz it's very high, more than a thousand ft above sea level, they don't dig well cuz nothing will come out, they rely on boreholes even though it's very expensive cuz u have to drill very deep to hit the water bed, and since it's deep, it's also risky, but they don't lack water like Enugu cuz they have adapted and thankfully, more boreholes are available, plenty tankers too and most people have personal storage tanks. Issue with Enugu city is they depend solely on well, they are closer to water bed and wells easily realease water during rainy season, so they feel borehole is a waste of money, they forget that come dry season, well will most likely dry up cuz even though they are closer to water bed, they are still on a hill.

You summarized it all. In addition, even when the water table is found, to drill a borehole in that location is almost up to 2-3 million .
Cost of drill bits ( tens of it will be used), lengths of pipes etc.

You find out that an average person can't spend that much for erecting a borehole In Enugu.
A soil that doesn't have sand, natural chippings all through grin
then 10 or 100 or 1000 ppl can come together to do so
