I remembered the very first day I clicked on Nairaland page... 3rd October 2009..
I remembered that day was a Saturday because we were celebrating independence day on that day... And someone on our table made mention of Nairaland..He said that if we want to laugh, and remember home and the way Nigerians reason things, we should go there. .. and truly that night I went and I loved it...

I still remember the thread that got me hooked... It was a woo challenge or pick up lines.. Where any one can mention any one he or she likes... And say some good things( in any language).. it was really funny because there were so many bad lines... In all these, it was just harmless matured fun...No insults because it was done by mature minded individuals...

I was a guest for almost 2yrs..I loved the intelligence most Nigerians exhibit then... The maturity was there, I guess because data was expensive and smart phones not affordable then... Those that could afford it were the working class... That could explain the maturity... When Advice is being given, it doesn't smell gender based...

Nowadays, It's a different case altogether.. Then, Romance section used to be the best section in Nairaland, but after the popular Nairaland crash of 2013, it turns to where folks do tales by moonlight..Any adult heading to romance section is just going there to insult his or her sensibility..

Nowadays, People gives advise based on their gender,.. The tribalism is just getting worse by the day...

I'm not naturally an Angry person but what makes my blood boil was in the middle of a sensitive discussion, someone will place an advert...For example, Some one might be talking about the death of a loved one, u will see a long billboard sign of computer for sale or shoe adverts... And the moderators that pushed that thread to the front page will ignore it as if it was pleasant to see that advertisement at that time..

Anyways, We can't start this year with complaint .. There are people on family section that I liked and respected a lot.. They always remind me of the good old days...I kinda see them as family and I am happy that they made it to 2022..... Though it is a faceless forum, a lot of people have made faceless friends, gotten good advice from faceless individuals.. that's the beauty I see on Nairaland...

Family ke? Not all of us share this sentiment o!

If you ask me Nairaland is pretty much divided already, along the lines of ethnicity/tribal wars, gender wars, religious wars, straight vs gay people, married vs singles, did I miss anything?

I wish Seun would be more active in participating on his own forum and check-mating these things, because he is well liked and respected. I can tell he is, because on the rare occasions he engages you see the positive reaction and responses he generates in people. Imagine, if he was constantly wading in, to request we all respect each other and be more civil in our interactions?

I belong to a foreign forum similar to Naiaraland, but with a wider reach and a more diverse audience, with people from all over the globe. Membership is predominantly US citizens the way Nairaland is dominated by Nigerians. The owner of the site/forum actively engages and participates on her site, she personally removes comments which break the rules, explains why, is often appealing to users to lead with respect and kindness, she is well liked and respected to a point where, people just do right by her and other members, by refraining from breaking the rules.

It is such a safe, kind, knowledgeable and wonderful community of people, that I am often touched by the interactions, updates from users, acts of kindness and in some instances even moved to tears, with my faith in humanity restored. I'm not talking about Quora or Reddit and it's not a forum I like to disclose or share for fear of..........make my Naija people no carry their craze come here abeg. It is bad enough that we have an international reputation of being rogues, let's not continue to give credence to that image, with more of our bad behaviour in the ways we do here.

The site's content is so rich and full, I am glad I came across it years ago and it has helped me evolve into a better person in different ways. Nairaland on the other hand, just brings out the worse in me and hasn't impacted much in a positive way, like the other site does. Let's be honest DenewLegends, don't you feel more negative emotions and behaviour emanating from you (like anger, annoyance, zero tolerance, reacting to and insulting others, etc) when you log-in, to this forum?

I saw a front page thread today and deliberately refused to click on it, because I won't like what I see, some of those negative emotions will come forth and may spill over to my reaction and response to certain people. It's the thread about a woman going through a divorce, with 3 young kids. When I first saw that thread, I was like, serious error. This woman for no carry this matter come Nairaland o, I hope she can handle the insults and bashing that comes next.

Please check that thread of the divorced woman, even I was amazed with the comments but I just looked at it that the bashers also skipped the thread because she was given a worthy advice and even told to overlook the reactions of the society and concentrate on herself and children.

I eventually did, but randomly. Meaning, I just clicked a page of the thread at random and the first post I read was a mean and very insulting one.

A user said, OP is an ashawo who just wants to continue hoeing (I'm paraphrasing he said worse) Another user (female) said, it is single olosho women that are breaking up and destroying their marriages, OP should stay and fight for her marriage, our culture etc. In her small mind now, every single woman is an olosho out to destroy marriages, abi? She validates my point on married vs single.

Both comments pissed me off to a point where, if I lacked self control and I was more reactive than proactive, I would have gone into bitch mode and thorougly blasted both of them. I stopped reading at that point and that was just one page out of how many? I'll take your word that there was more good than harm, done on that thread.

I can imagine, but the first page was so on point and no single insult was given and I think I stopped at the 2nd page. Seems the bashers came late, and loaded the newer pages. I also loved the fact that the said woman did not state reasons for the divorce to give room to bash either herself or her ex husband, rather she went straight to moving on with her life and seeking the best way to go about it. The foreign forum you talked about, I won't mind having a go at it.
