Good evening Ancestors on this street. I need your guidance here. We just relocated to Coventry from Naija and in the process of finding school for the kids. We wrote to the council and they scheduled a zoom meeting with us where they interviewed us alongside the kids. (6 and cool they told us that the nearest school of our choice has vacancy for the 6 year old in grade 2 while they do not have vacancy for the other kid who should be in grade 4. They said the option we have is to accept the nearest school for the grade 2 and the other farther school for the other one while we apeal to the council to see if they can reconsider and place both in same school

That is one. The next is that if they eventually place them and we want them fed, we would have to pay to the school for feeding. That one confuse me. I thought public schools in UK feed their pupils. Abi Coventry own dey different. How do I handle this feeding own.

As always, the decision rests on your balance of priorities.
I have someone who was faced with the same issue and opted to place 2 of his children in one school and the other in another school. He needed to get to work and couldn't deal with the option of leaving one child out while waiting for a placement. After a while of what he said was a lot of stress doing a school run in 2 places, the council did eventually place the last child in the same school with the others.

On the other hand, I know someone in a similar situation who is still waiting.

Lastly, in England, school meals are not free for all classes. In Scotland they are now (but tax in Scotland is higher than in England for the 3 upper tax bands).

If you change job mid-way, the new employer has to sponsor you and your 5 year route to ILR starts afresh. That's the temptation I will avoid no matter the pay involved.

I dont think that's true.

Na wha o, this Landlord wants to make it my responsibility.

Some landlords like to play smart.

Shortly after I moved into my current house, I noticed my shower tray was cracked, I reported to the letting agent and they got back to me to say it was my responsibility to change it. Cost was £400 plus, I told them I couldn’t afford that.

They wrote me back to say landlord wants to help me and would share the cost with me. He would be kind enough to have me pay monthly over a period of 12months.

I came here and asked whose responsibility it was, I got different opinions on it but some mentioned googling private landlord something. I sha checked and it clearly stated changing baths, sinks and plumbing was landlord’s responsibility .

I wrote them back to say advise on government website says it’s landlord’s responsibility, they said my tenancy agreement which I signed says otherwise.

I emailed the private landlord and tenant body for my borough and reported it, they asked for my permission to take it up which I gladly gave. Well, my shower tray was changed in less than 2 weeks without anyone asking me to pay a dime whether as one off or monthly.

It doesn't, you are just switching the sponsor

Thank you soooooo much for this. I haven't thought of this from this angle ☺️.

Would wait to hear from others but in the meantime, i'l brood over this.

Thanks again

I would say face your studies squarely, coming from a science background, Cell Biology and Genetics, University of Lagos worked for a big telecom company in Lagos, started my MSc Business with Business Analytics, Sept 2020, Northumbria University graduated Nov 2021, with a distinction, a mother of 2 boys. I moved with my family, the plan was to finish and apply for the PSW but my Husband got sponsored by the Telcoms company he was working for, he is a Specialist Engineer. I am currently working for Amazon as a Process Analyst.

My take is, do not deviate from the purpose.

That would be a heavy burden to feed every child till year 6 so as someone explained this stops at year 2

Some schools you pay about £2.50 to £3.50 per day to eat in school depending on the school. Alternatively you do pack lunch.

I always thought that free school meals were for those kids whose parents receive benefits, please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks so much for your prompt response, I really appreciate it. Hope you're doing okay today...

I do have some other question(s) please...

(1) Going by your experience, it seems you didn't invoke the PSW visa at all upon completion of your PGCE, cause you got a skilled job with sponsorship right and there was no need right?

(2) I know the PGCE year is very intense. But reminiscing through your daily term time post-work routines and on weekends; were you more of the time ever so swamped that you barely had time to yourself, or for some bit of leisure? For example few hours on a Friday night etc I know time management is highly key for an aspiring NQT, were you 'robbed' of leisure?

(3) I know schools vary, but what time did you finish from school on the average during your placements, and how much time did you spend planning, marking etc once you got home. And when did you go to sleep on the average most days?

(4) Not like I intend to do part time work to survive or anything cause I've pretty much saved enough for maintenance funds for the academic year. However I would like to work a few hours during the weekend, say 4hours on Saturday and 4 hours on Sunday hypothetically. Do you think this is feasible or completely unrealistic considering all the overbearing workload etc that needs to be sorted out. Is it actually feasible to squeeze out such time?

(5) The burnout rate from teaching seems rather on the high side especially for NQTs, what can an aspiring NQT do to manage the stress and pressures on the job.

Thanks again, for taking the time to respond and give further insight. Thanks.

Guys please can anyone speak to studying a 3 year course in the UK?

If you have 80-100 percent of the first year fees prior to resumption, what would it be like working to pay off the remaining 2 years?

Thanks

I know a guy way back in 2009 who enrolled on a 1 year course in London. He only paid a deposit for his tuition from Nigeria and had the intention to work to pay off the balance. He worked legally and illegally in London, and paid off the balance of the fees. However, he ended up failing the course and also failed the resits as he had no time and energy to study. He has been living illegally in London since 2011 when his visa expired.

It's much better to pay all the tuition fees upfront, and then work to pay accommodation and bills. It still wouldn't be easy and your final grade would get hammered, but at least, you don't stand a risk of getting kicked out of your course and your visa being curtailed.

Yes you are right ...

In England because Scotland or Wales may do differently

Reception to year 2= free school meal
Year 3 to Year 6= free meal only to those on benefits, the rest pay or provide

You can change jobs, provided you get another employer to sponsor you, this has no effect on your ILR clock. Changing from one visa category to another is what rests your ILR clock.

Aahh! Makes sense! Thanks for the clarification.

It's all the same in warehouses - picking and packing. You have to dress like tinned sardine though cos of the cold; you can also ask them if they can allow you to work remotely sha wink
