Are you aware that the more you delay the more you give room for the criminals to boycott the tracker?

Our conversations while on the test drive must have given him an impression I was tech savy, and that I could pull the stunt. Of course I was, and I still am

Yes Sir, it is possible, I replied. What brand of phone is it? He said infinix, he went on to say the owner had brought the pack with imei to the station. And in order to nab the thief, they will like to track the location of the phone.

Argh, Sorry sir, I can't, if it was an iPhone, we could, with find my iPhone. The xiaomi also has this feature, but times I have tested it, it gives random wrong locations. Ho. OK ok. He said.

There are also apps that one could install on devices before hand, that will not just track, but also feed all communications a user of device makes to cloud. This will only work if the app had been installed prior. A well known politician had ones given high end phones to his party faithfuls, unknown to them, an app like described had been installed, and he could not just monitor where they are, but also conversations they were making.

The phone in question is neither an iPhone, nor a xiaomi, sorry we can't Sir.

Then i put it to him that there are high tech gadgets that could be used to trace stolen phones through imei, or sim cards, but this security gadgets are only available to security agencies. He said he knows, sadly, at his division, they don't have it. Here is a DPO ready to nab crime, but without the needed operational tools to, we can't always blame them after all. We had further interactions, and came to trust him. I will later discover he wasn't just any police officer. But one with integrity. He made my stay in Uyo hassle free. Anytime I needed help, he was just a call awyay always willing help.

Calling him was not a bad idea, but there was a a but, a capital BUT, I had read in the papers early last year, that he had resigned from the police force.

Sadly, he had been frustrated out of the police force due to his honest disposition. They had kept him unpromoted for so Long that he resigned.

He is retired, so no good. There was no Way I will be dragging him into this. It was still too early to call our Onitsha installation centre. And I needed to have a hang on the situation before calling anyone.

First call. A Close Associate there in anambra, he works in the financial system, this avails him the opportunity to meet a lot of people, and trusted sources in the police force, there in anambra to save the day.

Hello good morning. Good morning Bro he said. His voice still had some drowsiness to it, he should be getting ready for work, so i thought. The time was a little pass 7:15am. I wasn't going to be asking him why he was still on bed by this time on a Monday morning.

See, listen to me. There is major problem I need to fix right now, one of our clients vehicle has just been hijacked at gun point there in anambra, someone called me to report but I think he is one of the thieves too. So I don't know of you know any trusted police officer or any of your colleagues does, that could help out. I have a google link location of where the vehicle his.

What! My barrage of words must have hit in ways that made all the soporific countenance he had before vanish. I will like you to repeat what you just natarated he muttered. The drowsiness in his voice had disappeared, I could feel him sitting up on his bed with a concerned look.

Do you have have a trusted police officer in Anambra, there in Ukulobia to be precise. I think the criminals that hijacked the vehicle are the once contacting me, and I have given information enough for them to know someone else knows where they are.

Omor, he replied. Really this mess na real omormor situation. Let me check and see, if I could reach anyone. And today is sit at home.

Kai. Monday Ipob sit home, no movements. No wonder he was still sleeping by 7:15am, Which kind wahala be this. I will call you back.

Meanwhile My itel phone is ringing again. The same caller I wish had never had my details his calling. It is about time I picked his call and hear what he has to say!

I wouldn't be ignoring the call this time, maybe I could work on the psych of whoever this criminals are. I have watched enough detective movies and read enough John Grisham books to pull a trick.

Yeah hello!

Unlike the first conversation, I had to be in charge. My voice had been laced with some hoarseness evident when one is afraid of something. I had clouded it with a little deepness than usual. I need to convey some sense of grasp and control.

I just checked my WhatsApp, you are using the same number you requested for an installation to send a WhatsApp message to me. If truly your brothers phone was taken from him, how come you are using the same number to send messages on WhatsApp?

I think I did well, I had not plan what or how I was going to go about the call. Spoke out of impulse, I don't think he could sense any fear in my voice, if he did, I couldn't tell, because, the response I got was a silent end.

It was but for some seconds, but it felt like eternity.

Talk, danm it!

Following, nice one op, but b4 u come to a concluding end, I'll like to make few suggestions concerning ur line of work from what I've read so far....

You already made mention of keeping ur customers record for every installation;

I would suggest you also take a passport photo copy for each customer, more like each customer having a profile on ur record books, that way if even if the person's details doesn't tally in a case of stolen identity, u can always confirm via picture or video call (u don't necessarily need to show ur face, just to confirm customer). You could have easily avoided this hassle with this idea. wink

And also take down two or three Next of Kin contact details. One isn't enough.

Just my lil contribution for future references. Anyway carry on, waiting for updates.

..... I took the initiative to continue talking, he must have been trying to process what I said, probably trying give the right answer. Whatever. I am not backing down.

I fired on. I need to verify if you are not part of the gangs. Then he responded, Yes,

Yes! Yes what? , er gbami. So I was right all along.

Yes, he continued, it is the same phone. You installed the tracker on my brothers vehicle, not mine. I just linked you guys up.

Linked us up, linked up how

my itel phone still on my right ear, fumbled and picked up my smartphone, hands almost shaking, glanced through the whatsapp message to check the chat history. Then there It was.

It is certainly the same number that inquired about a tracker installation, sent installation location.

Scrolled down, and saw where I requested for the details to configure the app for live tracking. And that was the end of the chat.

The next message was the plate number he sent this morning after I had requested for it, to check on our system.

His words were adding up… phew… for the first time in the longest 1hr 15 min of my year 2022, I could actually take a really deep breath, and breath freely.

On the 21st of December 2021, I had received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number.

Hello good morning,
I need a car tracker!

The way the request came, it was like one who knew what he wanted and had some sense of urgency to it. I sent a demo of how the tracker works, and he texted back

How do I get it.

Straight to the point and decisive. Told him, vehicle will be brought to one of our workshops at Gbagada which also doubles as the installation centres for our gps trackers. We have over 9 workshop spread across nationwide for car repairs and fleet management solutions.

He texted back,

I won't be able to get to Gbagada.

Asked him where he got our ad from. Jiji, nairaland, or Instagram.

Where the ads are seen is a factor to the cost of installation. The cost of advertising on any of the platforms is added to the base cost. In his case, it was nairaland. Told him the cost of installation, 40k with installation at any of our centres and an extra 5k if we are coming offsite. Everybody wants a discount, he requested for one, told him that's the best price.

We fixed a day for the installation, which happens to be on the 24th of December, 2021.

He will later tell me, it was his brother that needed the tracker installed, and not him. Told him that's fine. We sent a tech over and got the installation done.

Who would have ever thought a tracker that was barely 3 weeks old, and a vehicle procured less than 5 weeks will be the target of car thieving syndicates in far away Anambra. Thank God he had a tracker installed. The story would have been different.

I have still not got a grasp around how people use millions to buy a vehicle, but can't afford a car tracker. I find it fool Hardy. There is also a school of thought that gps car trackers are pointless as all you need is vehicle insurance. Yes, the truth is, all car owners should get a comprehensive vehicle insurance, but also get car tracker installed on them.

How do you explain losing a vehicle you just bought because you don't have a tracker installed. And because Nigeria is Nigeria, when push turns to shove, some insurance company will so frustrate you till you forget about getting claims for your vehicle. And if you happen not to read the terms from some crooked ones where they clearly state your coverage does not cover for theft, fire, etc, sorry o. You will only get know this when gbeyge happens, and they present to you your signature and agreed terms.

There are actually great insurance firms here in our climes that won't bat an high before paying for claims nor give you trouble anytime you are making claims. Made another mental note to hammer more on having all vehicles tracked. But not on this one, it has one installed, the worst has happened. it is time for recovery.

Inshallah, by God's grace. Recover we will. This year, na our year of no losses!

I had glanced through the chat history while on the phone with the caller

The chat history did verify he is who he claimed he was, the brother to the victim which I will later get to know to be Mr Alfred, and the caller John

Ho, please use your WhatsApp number to call me I retorted. I don't know why I asked him to, I did anyways, maybe my subconscious isn't buying the obvious.

It is the same number, he replied. It is the same number I am using to call you. Took the phone of my ears, glanced and at the number and checked my smart phone, the number was the same as the WhatsApp number.

Phew,. I had just been afraid and concerned for nothing. for the first time in the longest 1hr 15 min of my year 2022 ,i could actually take a really deep breath without feeling choked

I am so sorry, I thought, I was communicating with the same people that stole his vehicle. I deleted the information I sent, thinking you were part of them. I will send them back.

He said he understands, nobody planned for this and we are all at a edge. Told him I am sending the tracker details immediately, once I drop the call, he thanked me, and hung up.

Took my smartphone and retype the login details for the app, and a Google link location of where the vehicle was. Also sent the sim number of the tracker to him, for manual track.

The way the manual track works, anytime you call the number in the tracker, it replies with a Google link location of where the vehicle is. That way Google map can give you directions to the vehicle.

Sent it to him immediately.

Got a satchet of chilled pure water, one wasn't enough to quench my thirst. Got another one, food didn't cross my end. Who goes hungry in situations like this.

We need to make plans for recovery. I dialed Mr John's number back

Kum Kum, Kum Kum, his phone continued to ring till it ended … he is not picking up

I don't know maybe it is the urgency that goes with wanting a call go through so bad that makes them not to. This is one of such moments. I have been trying to reach him back, so bad the call isn't just connecting.

When you want to make an urgent transfer, or want to send an urgent mail your data network gives up on you. Even when they do, the network is so slow same with normal calls. I want to assume this happens only in Nigeria and it is village people that are at work.

I had been trying to call him back, so bad, that when it eventually went through, I couldn't hear what he was saying. I gave up. There were a lot of things I want to speak to him about. First, get the current number Mr Alfred is used in reaching him, also draft out our next move for recovery, time is of the essence.

The situation wouldn't be so bad if there wasnt a shutdown command on the vehicle, that way, the criminals won't be suspicious and probably won't be aware they are being tracked.

With the trail of events, having the vehicle shutdown by whoever did it, which I will like to unravel. We have limited time to act. They know something is up. As much as we hide the trackers in hard to reach locations, whoever is hell bent on finding it will. It is a matter of time of time. The longer we take, the more risk we incur on loosing the vehicle.

We also need to find out who shutdown the vehicle, not a priority at the moment, the fore burner priority is to make decisive steps to recover the vehicle..

I tried Mr John's number again, it is isn't connecting, I cursed airtel.. Arrant nonsense.

I put a call through to my friend in Onitsha, he picked up, said he had been trying to reach me, and the seronious voice on the other end said my number was switched off. Well, my number wasn't. How far he enquired

Gave him him the latest update, my previous caller was not one of the thieves, but actually a brother to the victim. He was relieved. Any luck with a trusted police source we can reach, I asked? He said non. He talked about the Monday sit at home, and the restricted movements and how it was affecting everything. Promised to update him as the events unfold.

The criminals had taken advantage of the sit at home to perpetrate crime. Mr Alfred must have left very early in the morning, probably to beat the restrictions. Unknown to him, the dare devils were lurking in the darkness looking for who to prey on.

While my thoughts were wandering, I got a call from Mr John, the brother to the victim. Thank goodness.

Hello, I have been trying to call you back

Ho, I have been on call with one of our cousins, who happen to be in Anambra and installs gps trackers too. I have sent the vehicles Google link location to him. And he is already on his way to Nanka.

Great, great, I exclaimed. So what's the plan. Before you go ahead with yours, this is what I advise, this case needs to be reported at the nearest police station. Then also, from experience, I wouldn't want us to rely on the police for the recovery, good if they are responsive, often times they aren't.

I have had situations you go to the station with Google link location of vehicle, and they continue to stall, till the criminals are gone, or they claim they are waiting for order at the top. Funny how they don't wait for order to set road blocks, or wade in into civil matters, but once it is duties within their purview, they are always waiting for order.

He said that's true, that their cousin he contacted said the same thing. That he is planning to use vigilantes for the recovery. Ho that fine I said. And more so, there is sit at home.

How close is he to the village I asked, he said he would be there in the next 30 minutes. Great. Thats great I exclaimed. Please keep me posted on any updates.

I also requested that he send me the current number Mr Alfred, the victim that had is vehicle stolen sent to me. He said he will do that right way. He thanked me and hung up.

I had questions I will like to inquire directly from Mr Alfred. He alone knows who shutdown the vehicle. This would be our next puzzle to unravel. The vehicle currently not starting gives us limited time to act. It could make make or mar the recovery.

You will think during sit at home, police were going to keep keeping check points and beef up security, but they are mostly either also hiding In their respective homes observing sit at home, or wearing mufti at their stations.

Under normal circumstance, you will see them mounting checkpoints on almost every 3 kilometres stretch, or just anywhere there are pot holes that vehicles need to slow down. I could bet, if investigations are carried out, it won't be no surprise finding anyone of them digging holes on an already Good Raod to create an avenue to mount check points with the sole aim of harassing motorists.

On sit at home days, the roads are always free. And police stations are almost always empty. This criminals use such days to commit their atrocities, not because of the fear of security forces on normal days, but the fear of jungle justice by prying eyes when caught on normal days.

Checked my WhatsApp, Mr John had sent his brothers number as promised. Dialled it.

This is wegotracknigeria. I heard about what happened, hope you are in a safe location. He said yes, that though he is walking along lone a path, he had already left the thick forest they dumped him, and trying to gain access to the major road. There was no point asking him how it happened. But he sounded calm and composed, like nothing really happened. Ho. Great. We thank God for everything, I said.

Now, the top priority is to get you in a safe location. Then at the same time, you need to be on the front wheel in recovering the vehicle. It is bad enough you had experienced a life threatening situation, and the weights of recovery should not rest on you, but sadly you happen to be closest to the location. First, I need you to go to the police station to report the incidence. Then call a close friend or Ally to get at least five men to the location showing on the gps map.

I want to assume the thieves must have gone along with the key of the vehicle, the only means to get vehicle out of the said location is to tow, so we will need a towing van. Please, do not go with them to the location. I instructed.

Get to a safe location and start directing the recovery. I heard your cousin who happens to install trackers too is Almost near the village the vehicle is, he said yes. Great then.

Mr Alfred is a man of few words, maybe he is still recovering from the shock of the incidence, I reckon. We need to thank God for your safety, he has helped us till this stage, he will see us through till your car Is recovered. He thanked me profusely, and hung up. The time was already past 9am

There was very little I could do at this moment but to hope and pray. And wait like a duck for updates from them.
