Hello Nairaland
Good morning to everyone.

My name is Promise I'm in my mid 20s. currently I have graduated but still having some outstanding courses (full session) .

I graduated from one of the state university.

My problem is that I'm an Amateur boxer (Paramount king boxing) Lagos and still need to clear my courses before I can take my results. Things haven't been going well with me, the people training me in boxing has told me to choose between my Career in boxing and the school I'm going ( because it's really affecting me I can't go to training anymore) .

I don't know what to do should I just leave this degree and focus on my boxing career ( may be I may travel abroad when opportunity comes) or should I finish my school because this degree has been drawing me back ward(since 2015 I was suspended and I came back in 2019 ) now I graduated but I'm still owing my school delsu (9 outstanding courses) .

I'm really suffering because my parents don't have much, but they are still struggling to make sure I go.

I'm really tired.

please I need advice. please u can insult me but I also advice me thank you I'm the first son I have two sisters.

Go and get the degree, you may need it tomorrow.
Having a degree may open doors of opportunity as a boxer.

Welldone bro. I trained amateur kickboxing for a while, so I know how tasking the training is. Morning and evening, morning and evening. Rugged.

I'll say that it depends on your age now, and the promotion you're with. You know say this thing na damage wey body de collect, and it gets harder to heal and recover, the older you get.

If you still have time on your side, you can still do school after, because your time for blowing in combat sports is limited, although the skills never leave you, except for maybe speed and stamina.

Then if you are with one promotion, they will just be carrying you to all these local fight tournament in the east or ibadan, where even if you win, them go just pay u like 5k, promise you say them go soon carry you comot outside country. You will just be packing facial and body injury for meaningless money. You may get lucky sometimes, an international promoter may be at these events, and be impressed enough by you sha, but that's like 20 percent of the time from what I saw.

The school option now, u go de pay to sort, incur debts and all, you finish u fit no come see work, now the time you could have used to blow in sports e don pass, and for nothing.

If I were in your shoes I'll still do the school, let the promotion drop me, I no go send, you can always go to the coach in your local stadium, if you're good, he go carry you go sports festivals to compete, then you meet one or two ppl who can carry you outside (most na just promise and fail), because anything here, my brother, na just wound you go de collect steady. Even the festival's sef you win your gold 1m, them go first delay your payment then comot something b4 paying, then your coach wey enroll u go demand him own, before u see anything.
It's a hard choice but try to do the both if you can. Unless you can see evidence the paramount is ready to take you outside. This is my 2 satoshis.

Finish your education first! You can still train for your future boxing career while in school.

Not all professional boxers make it in life, so you need to have a plan B, which is your education degree, to enable you to get another job.

Yes, having a degree will open some doors for him.
With his degree, he will be able to access institutions and places that will help him showcase his talent and abilities.
As a boxer, he needs to be visible in a wider audience and he needs to be known.
This will help him in his career progression.

Just like Mike Tyson?

Or Mayweather?

Or Logan/Jake Paul?

Who do you know, or know of, has benefitted in boxing because "With his degree, he will be able to access institutions and places that will help him showcase his talent and abilities"?

The names you mentioned are they Nigerians?
Mike Tyson, et al grew up in a country that appreciates their talents and support their sporting dream.
Can you compare USA and Nigeria in terms of spotting talents and supporting their sporting dream?
Did. Mike Tyson travel to another continent seeking for greener pastures?
One way to leave Nigeria is via foreign scholarship. With a degree, the Op can apply for foreign scholarship (Msc) when he gets there, he will be in a saner clime where it will be beneficial beneficial for him to pursue a career in boxing.
A Tekena in Washington have more opportunities to succeed as a boxer than A Soboma in Borikiri,PH.

Biko, what is Okocha's degree in?

Or Simon Moses?

Or Samuel Okon Peter?

Elucidate, young sir, how a degree in Nigeria, specifically, has helped previous boxers/sportspeople in a systematic way?

I lost contact with my coach in Calabar. Coach Abbe. But like I said, go to your stadium in whichever state. You're even Lagos based, that's where all the connect are supposedly. Find the boxing coach and display ur skills, they will enroll you for this year's national sports festival. Or u go Calabar u.j. esuene stadium go find coach Abbe, he is always looking for his next champion, especially super heavyweight. But anything you win, him share de inside, just know that. He go tell u say he no de shame to ask for money, even 10 times.

Be like your confidence high, you say u fit win 3 gold, no worry, u go reach there show urself. It's either you show yourself or you collect KO grin

Ah, well... Too bad. You might need to make that trip to the stadium tho. Most times during these festivals, Niggas will be from Calabar trying to compete for delta state, because na them de pay their athlete well or they don't really have athletic representative in the chosen sports, so there's enough bar to pay the few that are willing to represent. Them, Edo, and some northern states like that.
