If Nigerians complaint that Igbo's are excesses. Don't you think other tribes are not doing enough to compete with them? If Igbo's were to be dominating in entertainment industry you people will still hate them for no reason. Now look at for years Yoruba are the one leading in entertainment industry and igbos are not worry.

Just to chip in to this interesting thread @deukpai

It's NOT about competing with Ibos like you stated. The perception has always been there for decades
pre-and-post 1914 about the OVERBEARING attitude of some Ibos who want to be domineering
or pushy in a plural ethnic society. Even abroad, some African countries complain about the behavior
of some noisy Ibos. Look at the COR Movement or the Calabar, Ogoja, Rivers Movement that
existed before 1960, and the call by non-Ibos [Ibibios, Efiks, Ijaws, Annangs, Ejegbam,
Southern Cameroons, etc] for them to be separated from the Old Eastern region
because of the overbearing attitude of Ibos who filled sensitive positions with their
kinsmen.

Chinua Achebe himself in a rare moment of clarity stated in his last book before he passed on that
"Igbos Are Noisy Exhibitionists & They Lack Humility And Quietness" - Achebe

“I will be the first to concede that the Igbo as a group is not without its flaws. Its success can and did carry deadly penalties: the dangers of hubris, overweening pride, and thoughtlessness, which invite envy and hatred or, even worse, than can obsess the mind with material success and dispose it to all kinds of crude showiness. There is no doubt at all that there is a strand in contemporary Igbo behavior that can offend by its noisy exhibitionism and disregard for humility and quietness.” - Chinua Achebe

In any event, there are Ibos who have a great deal of emotional intelligence that I've met over the
years and they work in harmony with others, but there are these group of uncouth Ibos who put
other innocent Ibos into troubled waters through their very careless talk and this can be seen EVEN
on Nairaland where some Ibo-speaking trolls have constituted themselves into a nuisance and
have offended and fought with many ethnic groups online and offline.

Bla Bla Bla
Abeg make u no die over Igbo matter. You guys seem to have very different standards when it comes to Igbos.
More than half of winners chapel members are Igbos and yet less than 5% of their resident pastors are Igbos.
How many times have you seen Igbo’s wail and gnash their teeth in regards to that?

None of what's going on here serves God. God is love. How do we know God's children someone asked Jesus. He replied by their actions will you know. This pastor needs to seek the face of God and ask for repentance. God understands all spoken and unspoken languages and not just
that of the Pastor.

May God help us overcome our biases and hatreds in Jesus name. Amen

The official language in Nigeria is English to start with.. you can't force other tribes to learn Igbo or speak Igbo. It must strictly be by choice.

I understand a lil. bit of Igbo myself cos I attended Igbo classes in high school, just that I didn't write in WAEC. When I'm in a gathering and I see people from other tribes there, I switch tongue to English so noone will feel left behind or aggrieved and when I'm with my tribe guys, it's sweet Yoruba all day long.

The priest should have instructed the choir to do English to carry everyone in the church along but I guess we all have different approach to doing things.
It is your first post that gave me concern:
You said, "That's because some people don't respect boundaries or respect their hosts... How will you go to a church where the priest is not Igbo, doesn't speak or understand the language and start singing chorus in it. What happened to English or the local language in the area which is Yoruba?
I'm sure the non-Igbos there met with the priest to express their displeasure over the turn of events in the church which prompted that statement credited to him. For God sake, people should respect boundaries and respect their hosts."

Your post above was my issue and not your eventual response to mine.
You mentioned boundaries.
Boundaries to God or to man?
I asked you what you'd have done if you were the priest and you haven't answered it. You also did not acknowledge that it was a screw up from the priest.

There's something called the Laity in the Catholic Church. That's where the issue would've been discussed if congregants felt the one-sided songs was becoming a problem.
Come'on! What is wrong is wrong!!!

I am careful not to base by judgment of the situation of a potentially skewed reportage of the media....

Even though the beauty of worship is seen in our local dialects... but reversal of it is despicable and in bad taste. Some churches being mere association of ethic collectives and village meetings rather than true house of God. Positions and service functions ends up becoming guided by ethnicity and the place of God is relegated.... trust me such churches become spiritually stagnant...

I am an Anglican. I lived in Ikorodu till 2010. I remember when our church newly started... the then Bishop Adebiyi had cases of churches some churches with ethinic-laced challenges which was affecting its growth. He came up with creative solution - All churches stated from year 2000 upwards will conduct services in English and not any Nigerian language. Prayers and songs could be sung in any language....

My Church St. Paul's Owutu grew fast, we had a well blended congregation and we were more like family. Any time I visit Ikorodu and the church, I feel at home with people of all races, peoples, ethnicity and colours. This is what Jesus wants...

I want to give the Revd. Father a benefit of doubt that this is a typical problem he was trying to solve...

PS: If this was the "offense" does it warrant suspension? or is there something else?
Interesting. I lived in Owutu myself in the late 90s to early 00s.
Was living close to Inglewood. Don't know if you know the school.

What has this got to do with Yorubas shameless bigot.

Is Rev.Fr.James Anelu Yoruba? You just proved his point when he talked of the "excesses" of Igbos.

Even on Nairaland, you guys are the major nuisance, full of hate and insult, we have here.

Abeg face the fact that most Nigerians despise Igbos and stop linking Yorubas to the bad rep you have with fellow Nigerians.

Lol. Can you Igbos ever act educated and refined? So you have a crystal ball to read beyond what is written to somehow link Yorubas with this?

Father James Anelu has a problem with Igbo "excesses" and somehow it is Yorubas that put him up to it?

You Igbos will never heal to be better loved and accepted by fellow Nigerians because when Nigerians complain of your "excesses" the first thing you do is attack them and point fingers of blame eslewhere. Preferably at Yorubas.
WRONG... YORUBAS ARE THE ONES WHO GAT PROBLEM WITH US. U GUYS ARE NO MATCH

I can't believe that the story finally got to nairaland and possibly the media. That's my parish and I was there when we made her stupid comment siting that the choir member must have come from the Igbo village hence the reason why he has been singing Igbo songs during the first collection after Holy Communion. The priest had the opportunity to apologize to the congregation right and end all hostilities there but the mumu kept on justifying his action siting that "we complain that Fulani is dominating Nigeria and we all complaining, it's the same the Igbos are doing in the catholic church". This really irked the congregation,
I'm suprised how this incident that happened last sunday finally got to the nairaland. E be like say we get nairalnders for church wey go report to Bishop and Seun
Imagine equating Igbo with fulani.and you people were watching him uttering this rubbish, una no beat am?most lagos born & brought up Igbos re just too weak for my liking.

Let them too go and do same if its easy. So igbos are only good for contribution and not recognition?

Who told you we hate Igbos? Do you think we love Yoruba ? How on earth can you think we will leave Igbo whom we share so much in common with culturally and traditionally and love Yoruba who
We don't share anything with?

Be reasonable. Does kanu speak for all Igbos ? No so how can you think people like Wike or Asari speaks for all of us in Niger Delta?
