Hello,

I wasn’t talking based on my singular experience. It has been proven time and again that what ever you get with the free calculator increases after the official evaluation. This is indeed a fact.

Again. Nothing was proven. I have been on here for over 5 years and it’s not true on and outside nairaland.

You don’t label things to be fact when the official website says otherwise and when you have limited experience. I had my WES in 2017, I had a different experience. I have equally seen a lot of people with different experiences other than what you called fact. So I don’t know where your fact is coming from.

Please I need advise

I got a PhD in Germany which comes with several gadgets (laptop, desktop, phone, flight coverage, residency option etc) and huge salary. At the same time, I got a PhD offer in the USA with a research assistantship.
The salary in Germany is 1.8 times the one in the USA
USA PhD will take me 5yrs to complete while Germany will take me 3yrs
The course from German directly aligns with my interest while I'm gonna be picking up another field in the USA, all in Engineering.

Which one will you advise me to go for?

#gurus_in_the_house

It depends on what you want. Germany is equally a good country to get your PhD. However, there are more opportunities in the US. If you are not attending the top schools in Germany, you won’t be open to as much opportunities available in the US. Most of the prestigious engineering workshops and conferences happens in the USA and a degree from the USA is just bigger than what you will earn at any school in Germany that is ranked less than 300 in the world.

Technically if your school is in the Top 10 in Germany, I will advise you go for that. Spend 3 years in school and a 2years post doc in the US will bring the same prestige as an American degree. If your American school is in the top 20 in America, ditch anything and go for that. Spend 4-5 years In school and start the faculty race if that’s your dream. Otherwise, you will have more companies (from FAANG to startups) calling to employ your expertise.

Goodday, please I have a question?

Are their free calculators on how one can calculate his cgpa on a 4 points scale or a point scale. A step by step guide would be appreciated

Another thing is, a friend wants to give me an invitation to visit a conference in the usa around June this year and am to apply for visa.

Do you think I would be able to get a scheduled date for the visa interview before the conference date?

What are my chances of getting this visa?

Please reply all

You don’t need to pay SEVIS fee to book appointment. You need to pay the Sevis fee before the appointment interview date.

You should pay the SEVIS fee immediately you get the I-20 if possible.

Book any date you see on the appointment portal and request for emergency appointment/ Expedited appointment. It would be granted and dates would be sent for him to pick.
It depends on the visa fee you paid for. It’s for visitors visa you would have to pay another visa fee for student visa.

But they need his i-20 form to be able to book for EA naw.

It's better you wait for his i-20 form ma before proceeding because its very likely you will get a far date and need to apply for Emergency.

So do all in order. My opinion sha

Do you understand English at all? This has been proven over time. If you use the Free calculator, whatever you get increases after the official evaluation. This isn’t up for debate.

Not in all cases ogbeni. I've done WES evaluation and I got the exact grades I got using the free calculator

Be careful!

Someone could just email you, claim to be them and end up swindling you.

Walspring I think you need to come forwards and let people know how to reach you easily. Not many people know about PMs here on Nairaland.

Cheers!

Sir, the bolded may not likely happen. US mostly accepts graduates within US for postdoc. And there are issue of language barrier that can stand as one of the obstacles in getting desired job in Germany. I will advise him to seek honest opinion from those with PhD degrees from Germany. Left to me, I will still choose US over Germany for PhD.

If you will heed my advice, just shelve the idea. You may likely get rejected. If you are planning to get F1 or F2 visa in future, do not dent your record with US immigration. My 2 cents

US mostly accepts graduates within the Us because there are more students in the US. I am a PhD student and I have seen several Out of country PhD getting a post doc. You mentioned issues with Language? If your publications are in English, there is no issue with language. Again, if he’s in the top 10 school in Germany and you cemented your place with publications, you will get Post doc in the US. Engineering post doc are everywhere though may be competitive. Btw, my advisor came from outside the US for a Post Doc which led to his appointment as a Professor.

So yes, 3 years at a German top school is better than 5 years in a No name American school.

Thanks for your response.

Oversabi. How’s this related to what I said?

The guy said he used WES unofficial calculator and had 3.6. I told him to evaluate his transcript and that the official evaluation will increase.

I never said his gpa will increase or decrease. Generally , whatever you get from the calculator increases after official evaluation.
Not all. Mine didn’t increase
