Simple test is Urinalysis.

But encapsulating is Renal Function Test.

Urine analysis: To test for the presence of abnormal constituents of urine.

Blood Test ( Electrolyte, Urea and Creatinine): This answers the questions like is the kidney filtering the necessary waste products, level of hydration, acidity.

Clearance: The glomerular (Kidney)Filtration rate. You make use of urine samples for extrapilating this.

Quite an enlightening piece.
The ways young people are coming down with end stage renal failure is rather too alarmingly, no thanks to their unhealthy lifestyle. When you tell them you don't drink alcohol, they see you as weird. At the end na their liver and kidneys go still feel am. angry

Young man alcohol is not the major factor
The major factor
Is drug over the counter(DOC) coz of the chemical use in preserving them and also can food coz of the preservation, lack of water also one need to be taking some quantity of water everyday to ease digestion. Coz waste is being stored in the kidney.

Glory be to GOD Almighty! I received intensive care and treatment at LUTH and I was placed on hemodialysis and given several blood transfusion and later was placed on blood boosting medication. Last time I had dialysis was in March 2016 and I have been freed from dialysis and I am now able to do things that I love doing and also resumed back to work before the end of that same year. Initially i lost hopes and I thought that I was going to die simply because my case was very severe and my blood pressure was very high, blood sugar levels was low, creatinine level was very high, BUN (blood urea Nitrogen) level was very high, PCV ( Percentage of Cell Volume) was extremely low, but Thank GOD for my life today. I didn't do a transplant but I took caution, i listened to the health workers, i avoid some certain foods, i adopted a new lifestyle, i do adequate medical check-up, takes my medication accordingly and completely avoid self medication.

Am so grateful to God for your life

@OP Thank God for your health now.. most people find it hard to let go of kidney damaging habits till it's too late for them.
I saw a video of some people caught faking all these expensive drinks they sell at bars and clubs and was like woow.. they mixed 'God knows what' together, added sugar and started filling the Hennessey etc. bottles, packaged it for sell. I think we should all be vigilant with the things we consume with the high rate of crime and get rich quick syndrome plaguing our society.

See how some people are faulting herbal medicine. Just because you got it right through the Orthodox medicine does not render other medicine useless. Are there no people who have died relying on the same medicines?

Thank God for your testimony.

What you had 6 years ago was acute kidney injury which may be caused by many conditions such as indiscriminately used of medications/herbs, profuse vomiting or diarrhea, acute infection, toxins, sudden rise in blood pressure, etc.

Unlike chronic kidney disease that is not reversible, acute kidney injury is reversible but could be a risk factor for developing chronic kidney disease like in life.

How can you prevent this?

Stay hydrated with clean water all the time, avoid taking unprescribed medications, avoid herbal remedies, exercise regularly, treat hypertension /diabetes / chronic infections (Hepatitis B/C/HIV) if you have any, stop or cut down alcohol, avoid cigarettes, see a good doctor when you are sick, stay hydrated if you are losing body fluid(vomiting, diarrhea, unusual passage of large volume of urine, bleeding), good antenatal care etc..

Cheers
Hello! Your advise should be taken serious however, where you talked about taken herbal remedies, can you be more explicit about that? In my house, we got bitter leafs planted and we use it alot of times. In fact what we do is, once in every week at weekend, we are always takes the juice ( bitter leafs + water's extraction). Doing so, we don't fall sick in fact I'm going to Three years now without paracetamol talk of any other drugs but ZERO SUGAR, ZERO ALCOHOL. NO SOFT DRINKS, NO ENERGY DRINK, OFF ORORO ( replaced with palm oil ), fry food once in a month. ZERO FAST AND JUNKIE FOOD. But now with what you just said. Is that safe? ( The juice)

Herbal remedies is a generic term under which all sorts of herbal mixture fall into.

Consumption of herbs for it's medicinal benefits happens in all countries of the world and what is clear is kidney is very important in breaking down and excretion of almost all theses herbal products.

However, there are no enough studies to show the appropriate dosing of these drugs for those who have good kidneys and those with kidney diseases unlike other modern medicines that went through various trials before being approved for use.

Truly, some of these herbs have antioxidants and are beneficial but do when know the appropriate dose that is healthy for our kidneys and livers?

Sadly I lost my dearest mother through this disease.

Please friends let's stop self-medication it is dangerous.

If your sickness persists after 3days, please visit the qualified hospital for proper diagnosis and treatment. The earlier the better

One major causes of self medication is from Pharmacist/Chemist who dish out drug without Doctors prescription just to sell their drugs.

Just complain to them u have headache and fever, fiam Demn don pack drug give u, u wonder why Western world we keep shinning than Africans.

Stop encouraging people to become drunkards.

Stop the ignorant talk. The guy is right. The main culprits of renal disease are uncontrolled high blood pressure and diabetes, overdose medications especially NSAIDS drugs like Ibuprofen and Diclo and not alcohol..

There are non prescription medications that are generally safe to be given without a doctor's prescription. Shockingly though common medications like Ibuprofen and Diclofenac if taken disproportionately over extensive period can lead to kidney problems. That said the main culprits of rensl diseases are uncontrolled high blood pressure and diabetes..

Thanks. Well I was watching a program on YouTube and the man made it clear that, people are saying herbal medicine is bad due to the fact that, the safe measurement is not considered when it administered but that was wrong. In the olden Days, there is something called EMI in Yoruba language, it's like an egg thr shape and the size is like an egg, not bigger than local egg's size ( not agric o ) this EMI has a seed inside it that's as big as the size of the shell which give the shell big space inside it when the seed is removed. The seed is what is use in the making of shea butter. Now, in olden day, they get it, then gently cut of the head to remove the seed inside it. He said that was what safest measurement when taking any herbal medicine. If your body is strong or the infection is chronic and no healing after taken that measurement for 3 days then you can increase it to two. So that's how we take our bitter leaf juice. I remember last MAY when a friend of my kid sister came to spent 4 months with us, she was always has a very terrible menstrual cramp. It happened that she came on Thursday and her period time is on Monday, and we always take the juice every Saturday or Sunday. She complained when she took it because she has never taken something that's as bitter as that but guess was, that was how she was healed of her menstrual cramp till date. In addition, nowadays it's difficult to see that EMI but the size of schinap little cup is the replacement for the measurement.

Interesting..
I once had a 24 year old female student who had a kidney transplant here in Nigeria. Fund for her transplant was donated by her state government and she got her new kidney from her mother. Despite all the warning about unprescribed medications and herbs, she went ahead to use a herbal mixture for heavy menstrual flow and she suffered acute kidney injury with allograft (transplanted kidney) rejection.

She went back to hemodialysis because her given kidney had failed.

Sadly, she died while trying to raise fund for the second kidney transplant.

We all learn daily from our experiences..

I don't support alcohol intake even if it's little. I don't consume it either as it may put my kidney at risk. And I will strongly advise every renal failure patient to avoid it as this will take ones kidneys to end stage where transplant will be the only option.
