CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
NONYE
THREE DAYS TO THE WEDDING

I had spent two days with the crazy couple but it felt like two years already. They hadn't been treating me like a hostage though, infact they fed me morning, Afternoon and Night. I had refused eating at first but i figured if i was going to escape, i needed food to give me strength. I hadn't left the room since i was brought in, not like they didn't want me to. They often left the door unlocked and said i could go to the living room if i wanted to but i never left anyways. The door to the room opened and Maria came inside.

"Follow me" she said leaving the room while i sluggishly followed behind. When we got to the living room, her husband was seated already. He pointed at the space beside him and told me to sit. I eyed him skeptically before sitting.

"I told you that i would let you contact Jamil when the time is right" he said. I kept mute and when he saw i wasn't going to reply, he continued. "We are going to call him now. Tell him that an address will be sent to him once you drop the call and he is expected to come to the address alone. He shouldn't involve the police because if he does, he won't like what will happen. Did you hear everything i said?" He asked. I only hissed and looked away. "I will take that as a yes then" he added. He dailed a number on his phone and gave it to me. I snatched the phone from him and placed it on my ear. After a few seconds, Jamil's voice rang out from the other side.

"Babe it's me" i said.

"Oh my God Babe is that you?" He asked. I heard a shuffling sound in the background and concluded that he must have stood up upon hearing my voice.

"Yes it's me" I said.

"Where are you? How are you? Who abducted you? You are calling with a private number" He asked all at once.

"Babe listen to me. Your Uncle abducted me and he is planning to kill you. Please don't go to any address he texts to you after now" I said. Jamil's uncle landed a very dangerous slap across my cheek and snatched the phone from my hand. I winced in pain.

"Listen to me boy, if you want to see your wife alive, come to the address i will text to you now. Don't involve the police, if you do i will kill your wife before killing you. Be there tomorrow by 5pm" he said before ending the call. He stared at me with a bloodshot eyes.

"Because i said i didn't want to abuse you in anyway, you think you can flout my orders? Don't make me change my mind." He warned before leaving the sitting room.

"Go back to your room" Maria growled. I shrugged before entering the room. I landed heavily on the bed as tears gathered in my eyes. I wondered how my mother was taking the news. She must have cried herself to sleep since the day i got missing. Then my sister, I wondered how she was feeling too. I stood up and wiped my tears concluding to escape in one way or another. I went back to the living room and fortunately for me none of them was in the living room. I quietly walked towards the door and turned the doorknob, surprisingly, it gave way. I gently closed the door after i had stepped out. I heard noises from outside the compound and i longed for freedom the more. When I stepped fully away from the door, i noticed the house was a bungalow. It was the only building in the compound and it had a very high fence which was wired. I ran noiselessly to the gate and tried to open it. It was padlocked with a very big key. I fell down helplessly on the ground and cried my eyes out. I heard a laughter behind me and turned to see Maria.

"You think you can escape? We left the doors open because we felt you would like to come out for fresh air sometimes. You see this gate? It's always locked, you can't escape. When you are done crying, come in and have your lunch" she said all at once before walking back to the house.

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE
JAMIL
TWO DAYS TO THE WEDDING

We were on our way to the address sent to me the previous day. I know i was told not to involve the police but i had to anyway. They had fixed a tracking device on the button of my shirt and a listening device too. They dropped me off miles away from the address and i took a taxi there. When i got to the address, it was an uncompleted building that was fenced with a zinc. I stood outside contemplating if i should go in or stay outside. My phone beeped signifying an arrival of a text message. I opened it and the content of the text said i should go in. I went in and a young man was waiting for me.

"Follow me" he said and i obeyed. We walked to the back of the building and there my uncle sat on a block. He grinned the moment he saw me.

"Who do we have here?" He asked.

"You have me now. Let my wife go" I said.

"You don't command me boy" he thundered bringing out a gun from a bag i hadn't noticed earlier.

"What do you want from me?" I asked.

"Isn't it obvious? I want to kill you" he replied sarcastically.

"What did i even do to you Uncle Gerald? Why are you doing this to me?" I asked.

"Since I'm going to kill you anyways. I might just tell you everything from how your grandparents are the ones responsible for the man I have become today" he replied then turned to the young man that brought me in earlier "tie his hands and leave us" he said. The man nodded and tied my hands behind my back before leaving. "You might as well sit down because the story is a long one" he said calmly to me. I hurriedly sat down on a pile of blocks a few feet away from him. I hoped the police would arrive before he shot me.

"After your grand father willed everything to my younger brother your father. I wasn't happy and your father always seized any opportunity he got to rub it all in my face. One day i overheard your grandparents talking about a very important issue. I heard the man i had grown to see as a father say that he didn't will anything to me because i was the adopted son. I didn't understand at first but when i eavesdropped more, i learnt that they were childless for sometime after they got married and since they were rich, they decided to adopt a son. A certain woman gave birth to a set of twins and was willing to sell one because she didn't have what it would take to train the both of them. Your grandparents bought one child from her and paid her the sum of two million naira" he stopped for sometime staring intently at his wristwatch. I still hadn't figured where the story was headed but then something clicked in my mind.

"The person in prison is not your doppelganger?" I asked.

"You have always been a smart boy. He is my twin and not any doppelganger" he gave me a sinister wink.

"How does that concern my parents and me?" I asked.

"Calm down boy, I'm not done with the story yet" he answered. "After i was adopted, two years later they had their own son which was your father. They preferred him over me. Favoured him over me always. When i found out i was adopted, i went out in search of my biological parents. It was very difficult but i found them at last. My biological father had died from heart attack, he was never a good father anyways. The money they made from selling me, he spent it on gambling and drinking thereby plunging the family into abject poverty again. I met my brother, he was living a life of a criminal. He smoked and did all manner of criminal activity just to survive." He checked his wrist watch again.

"Are you expecting someone?" I asked. It was none of my business but i just wanted to buy more time for the police.

"It wasn't hard for me to instigate hatred in the heart of my twin against my foster brother and together we planned your parents death" he ignored my question. "The day i got arrested, he was waiting for me on the road. We got swapped and he went to prison instead of me because i wasn't yet done with you. You are probably thinking of how i carried out the plan meticulously. I have a handful of police men working for me and i also know you involved them. You think they would come to save you? You know nothing boy" he laughed sarcastically. My heart started beating in fear. I hoped he wasn't saying the truth.

"You think I'm a fool boy. I know everything going on in the police station. Right from when you laid a complain about me having a doppelganger, they told me." He bragged.

"How do you plan on achieving this? Your brother won't leave prison" I asked still praying that he lied about the police not coming to rescue me.

"You are still underestimating me boy" he clicked his tongue. "Honey please come" he said. I wondered who he was referring to until someone walked out from the building and i got the greatest shock of my life.

"Jesus Aunty Maria" I yelled "aren't you supposed to be dead? Jesus Christ am i dreaming?" I started sweating all of a sudden.

"I'm not dead boy, I was never dead. It's all part of the plan" she laughed walking towards her husband.

"Listen to me boy, you are still a kid. I lied to you about my wife's death so that you would believe that my so called daughter Isabella didn't have a mother she would stay with and would want to live with you. I knew you would agree if you thought my wife was dead" he winked. I couldn't handle everything i heard. I held my banging head in my hand and bent my head.

"Drink this" he said. I looked up and my Uncle was thrusting a bottle of something i didn't know to me.

"What is that?" I asked.

"Poison. You thought i was going to shoot you? I'm always ahead of you in the game" he chuckled. I motioned to him that my hands were tied. He opened the bottle and brought it up to my mouth.

"Everybody freeze. Hands up in the air" someone said. I turned my head sharply and a group of uniformed men were standing behind me. I didn't know any of them but i didn't even care as long as they would save me.

"Who are you?" My uncle asked.

"We are from the Lagos State division. Someone called us over" one of them replied then turned to me. "Mr Ahbulimen inspector Damian contacted us a few days back. He said some of the police men in the Umuahia division are working for your uncle, the reason we came in to save the situation" he explained.

"Thank you thank you" they untied my hands and handcuffed my uncle and his wife. We all walked out of the building.

"We need to find my wife" I said the moment we were out.

"She is fine. She has been saved" he replied with a smile. I looked at my uncle and his wife, they had a defeated look on their faces.

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR
NONYE
WEDDING DAY

I couldn't believe that after everything we had passed through, we were finally getting wedded. I had lost all hope at some point thinking that no one would come to our rescue. I was seated in the room where the makeup artist was working on my face. I had told her that i wanted something mild but she eyed me and said it was my wedding day and not some hangout. My phone rang, I answered immediately placing it on speaker so as to not interrupt the work going on, on my face.

"Babe" Jamil's voice rang out cheerfully from the other end.

"Bill Gate the second. How are you?" I smiled.

"I'm fine love. Hope you slept well?" He asked.

"Slept well gini (what?) How will i sleep well when we stayed up late last night talking on the phone?" I hissed subtly.

"Sorry babe. I will make it up to you when we travel for our honeymoon. I will pamper you silly" he said. I smiled sheepishly.

"Aaaaw i can't wait my love." I giggled. The joy of leaving Nigeria for the first time in my life swelled inside me.

"We leave in five days after our wedding, everything is set. Your Visa is ready and i have gotten the flight tickets too" he replied.

"Wow that's good. What are you up to babe?" I asked.

"We are on our way going to the church now" he said. I widened my eyes in surprise. They were on their way going to the church while i hadn't finished dressing up yet. I had finished wearing my wedding gown actually and my hair had been fixed already. Just the makeup and my shoes.

"Oh okay. The makeup artist is still working on my face" I replied gesturing to Bola the makeup artist to hasten up.

"You are finally getting a makeup on your face? I can't wait to see you" he giggled.

"It's my wedding day. I need to look pretty" I chuckled.

"You are pretty even without a makeover. You are my attraction and i love you with all my height. I would have said heart but my height is longer." he said. I let out a laugh.

"All these Edo people sha" I said.

"Yes i know. Edo men are cute" he chuckled.

"Keep feeling yourself." I laughed before speaking up again "You are distracting me husband. If you want me to join you in church and on time, you need to let me concentrate" I answered.

"Okay wifey. See you soon and don't say no to going with the police men i sent" he said. I rolled my eyes.

"Yes i will go with the police men" i answered.

"Bye then" he ended the call.

"Sister this your honey moon go loud. E go choke some people. Who dey zuzu?" My sister said. I had totally forgotten she was in the room.

"Onye Ara (mad person)" I hissed.

"Where una dey see all these love abeg? I go love ooo" Bola said. I only shook my head at the both of them.

"Ndi Ara( mad people)" I said and we all laughed heartily.

The drive to the church lasted about ten minutes and some seconds. The church was full when we got there. Police men stood at every corner and i couldn't help but worry. I didn't want to scare people away or give them the impression that something was wrong. I walked into the church with my sister following behind. Jamil was already standing at the altar waiting for me. We joined him and my sister together with Jamil's best man walked back to sit at the front pew. The pastor walked to us with a younger man bearing the rings on a tray. Jamil winked at me and i eyed him before looking away.

"Marriage to some is a bed of roses while to another set of people, it is not. It all depends on how you handle your imperfections" the pastor said when he was standing beside us. "Mr Jamil Onose Bello do you take miss Nonyelum Cherish Dike to be your lawfully wedded wife? To love and to cherish, In sickness and in health, for richer for poorer Until death do you part" he asked Jamil shifting the microphone to his mouth.

"Yes i do and will always do" Jamil replied immediately. People cooed at his response and reaction. The pastor turned to me.

"Miss Nonyelum Cherish Dike do you take Mr Jamil Onose Bello to be your lawfully wedded husband? To love and to cherish, In sickness and in health, for richer for poorer until death do you part?" He asked bringing the microphone close to my mouth. I looked at my mother and she was shedding tears. My eyes burned as my own tears gathered. I was sure Mama couldn't believe that her daughter was getting married after all the troubles we went through.

"Yes i do." I replied. The pastor took a ring from the plate and gave it to Jamil and said "you will repeat after me and mention your name where necessary" Jamil nodded.

"I call upon you all present to witness as i Jamil Onose Bello take thee Nonyelum Cherish Dike as my lawfully wedded wife, to love and to cherish. To honor and protect. For better for worst until death do us part" Jamil said out loud pushing the ring to my ring finger. The pastor turned to me and even without saying anything, i already knew what to do.

"I call upon you all present to witness as i Nonyelum Cherish Dike take thee Jamil Onose Bello as my lawfully wedded husband. Whom i will continue to love and Cherish in all circumstances. Whom i will continue to respect even in the worst moment until death do us part" I repeated after the pastor and pushed the ring to Jamil's ring finger wondering why my own vow was different from that of Jamil's.

"Before i proceed. Is there anyone that is against this union or has something to say please come forward and speak or forever hold your peace" the pastor said. I held my breath. What if Jamil's uncle appeared from no where and tried to stop the wedding?. I looked at Jamil and he gave me a reassuring smile. "In the absence of that and with the power bestowed upon me, I declare the both of you Husband and Wife" the pastor concluded and everyone clapped.

We sat down for the sermon and after a few more hours, the service was over. We all filed out to take pictures and after which the reception commenced. I changed into a red strapless gown with a slit running from my feet up to my thigh while Jamil never changed. Everybody ate to their satisfaction and i could even see my sister from the corner of my eyes acting all lovey dovey with the best man. I rolled my eyes. That girl was a gbaza queen.

EPILOGUE
JAMIL

My wife and i were on our way to Germany for our honeymoon after which we would visit South Korea next and finally Dubai before heading back to Nigeria. I didn't like that South Korea but my wife said she wanted to visit that place. What ever the Queen wanted, the Queen got. A flight attendant came to announce the take off and to state the rules. I helped my wife fasten her seatbelt while she held tight unto my hand. It was her first time in a plane. When we were airborne, she let go of her anxiety and relaxed her head on my shoulder. I stared at her succulent lips and bent my head to kiss her but a look at the people sitting in the plane with us, i changed my mind. I regretted not having a private jet and there and then, i concluded to make enquires on buying one once we landed. Once we landed, i hailed a cab that took us to Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin where I had made reservations earlier.

Before we left Nigeria. We attended the court trial for my Uncle and his cohorts and i saw how punishment was meted out on them accordingly. My Uncle, his twin and the lab attendant were sentenced to death by firing squad for murder while Bella was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for attempted murder and Aunty Maria was sentenced to Five years imprisonment with hard labour. I decided not to let the thought of them spoil my honeymoon because i wanted to enjoy it to the fullest.

I want to thank you all for your time and patience and contribution towards the success of this story. I love you all and God bless.
