Okay.
You should look out for leasing office around your school, it's safer. Coppin State University has about 3 around it. It's a black neighborhood and not far from Penn station. You may want to look closer to the school environment better than further. It's dangerous. Morgan State has student housing around the school area. Also a black neighborhood. Loch Raven apartment is not far from the school if you are looking for affordable leasing office. You can also get some other ones. Towson University has a lot of leasing apartment very close to the school too. If your school is Downtown Baltimore (University of Maryland-Med school, University of Baltimore) you may want to consider housing options provided by your school because it's expensive compare to other part. There are some students that stays around Hollins (close to university of Maryland hospital) so you can consider that has well. For Johns Hopkins University, they have students housing close to the school, Rotunda and the likes. All schools in Baltimore city have easy access to buses and train so transportation shouldn't be a problem.
You may want to consider sharing apartment (in fact you should) because rent ranges between $1300-$1500 including/excluding utility. If you want to move in with your family (dependants) then you can look at the county areas that have easy access to buses and trains. Houses on Windsor Mill road, Windsor Forest Apartment Gwynn Oak etc.

If you totally want to leave far from the city then consider Owings Mills. Lots of Nigerians, lots of stores, far from all the schools in Baltimore but there are buses and a direct train to the city.

Hope this helps

Thank you so much for this. I would be attending the University of Maryland Medical school at Baltimore for my PhD.

I have been considering the rent especially because I also got an offer from Florida (Orlando). Are these suburb areas safe with one's family? The transportation cost to campus? And the average rent there?

My advice is that you go big on the employee angle (show you're doing really well as a middle-class person.) and you're a top manager in the company. You can also emphasize that the company is your Dad's and that you have a place in your family business, but it must be presented correctly. If you show too much that the company is your family's, they might just think you're using the business as a front to japa.

I'm assuming you're fully funded by the school. If not, don't take my advice pls

Thanks for this. It's not fully funded. The school offered about 9k$ as scholarship while the deficit left is about 19k. The rest will be covered by my uncle and his bank statement shows he is more than capable.. so what's your say ?

Hello Guys,

I am sorry I have to bring this back. Please note, it isn't to drag anyone. But as this is a public forum and information is key, we owe it to ourselves to give honest opinions, to the best of our abilities.

Please, if you are interested in attending Western Illinois University, do not hesitate to PICK the school and absolutely follow through. As an international student, I can unequivocally say this is one of the best schools you can attend in the states.....on many metrics. Might not be ranked as Ivy League but the education is top notch and the Nigerian community here is quite strong. The community is so welcoming and you'll get way more than you need in terms of your basic needs.

Yes, a lot of Nigerian are here and it's an advantage for you and not a disadvantage. They rightly got Visa at the embassy and they are leally schooling here. To the best of my knowledge, people hardly come here and abscond. So if the fear of embassy is why you don't want to follow through with the school, I can assure you, you have nothing to fear.

Thought to put this out here. And yes! I am in WIU.

I wish you all the very best.

Godspeed!

fairheart:

Why do you need to know her University? So that people will bomb it as they now did with Western Illinois University? I heard yesterday from someone at the embassy that many applicants came with Western Illinois University I-20 and almost, if not all of them, including someone who is fully funded, were refused.

So I have advised those who are in touch with me not to reveal their schools on this forum. I advise potential applicants that will be approved to keep their school out as well. Let every student find their own school and have a unique profile, so that they will take you serious when you apply for your visa at the embassy.

For your information, WIU was funding students until over 2500 Nigerian students bombed the school with applications. Now, they are reaping the result with many refusals.

Remember, the United States has over 5000 colleges and universities, so find your own school. Do the work! Don't avoid the work! It will help your journey. This is for all of you here!

Congrats.
Yes, schools environment are safe. Average 2 bed should range from $1300-$1700 depending on amenities. If you are going to University of Maryland Med, you do not want to move further towards the downtown because rent is on the high side. As high as $2500/room. I'd advise you make use of the outside school housing options from the school. That way you can see fellow students to share with (if you can stay in a shared apartment with your family. Bus ticket is $1.90/trip and $4.40/day. You should be able to get a student fee of $55/month from your school. There are buses everywhere around your school.

phoyeks:

Through the Common App, one of your recommenders is meant to be the Principal or Admin.personnel of your High School. Once you fill the person's name and email, a link will be sent to the Secondary sch. official to send the Transcript directly to the Common App platform. You will need to inform the Sch. personnel so he or she can respond to the link and upload the transcript before the deadline.
It will then be accessed by all of the schools you apply to. I'm sorry I couldnt reply your mail to connect with me. You can send me a mail directly to phoyeks@gmail.com. Cheers.

Hello Nairalanders,
I want to ask about loan for international student. I realised my school is not part of the listed school. For Mpower, or prodigy. The international loan that has my school on it has a co signer of Us Citizen. How do I go about this?

You'd have to secure a surety to stand the chance of obtaining the loan. Otherwise, you can work towards getting a funded GA from your Department.

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 16 by ThisGuy2020: 1:56pm On Apr 13, 2022
I think you can only request an expedited date when it’s 60 days to your program start date.

If you are to resume in the Fall, I don’t think they’ll answer you. Unless you’re resuming in the summer, them I’m not so sure.
