I think Nigerian Law regarding marriage of young people is quite different from American Law.

There are basically two legal systems in the country concerning the issue of marriage- Sharia in the North and the marriage system in the south.

The marriage system in the south is further divided into customary marriage and statutory marriage. A subsequent statutory marriage cancels the effect of customary law marriage on a couple but if there's is no statutory marriage, customary marriage is supreme.

The age in Sharia is "puberty" which is open to different interpretations. A Nigerian Governor married a 13 year old Egyptian in the last decade and it was held to be within Sharia.

The age for customary law marriage is also presumed to be puberty. It is open to interpretations.

The Marriage Act which is in force in Nigeria which is a replica of the Old English Marriage Act we inherited from our Colonial masters put the age of consent at 21. According to the Act, if any of the couple is below the age of 21, they can marry only with consent of their parents or guardians.

The interpretation of the statute is still open but at least it gives an age where Marriage cannot be done without consent. It does not state the age which couples below the age of 21 should not marry even if their parents gave consent.
