A lady lost her job as an On Air Personality (OAP), in a radio station because she has a speech problem, IGBERETV reports.

Barely one month after resumption of duty, Zainab Fakunle was laid off because she could not pronounce “R” properly. This was considered as a misconduct and hence she was laid off.

I'm in pain!
After almost 30 days of Ramadan, I got the most devastating news of my life. I was laid off my radio job as an OAP, just because I have "R" factor! They laid me off barely a month after resumption! I've worked at 3 different stations before now and it was never an Issue. This is devastating, but I know God will vindicate mePainful part was that when this happened they said it was misconduct.

Well, I think their HR team should be fired first!

She has a speech defect which can be rectified, she also knows it could be used against her yet she refused to help herself instead started typing nonsense on twitter thereby further putting an X on her back in the eyes of other radio station HR's who might want to help her as a favour.. I think I believe her sack letter more than her story

you know very well that most jobs in Nigeria are gotten through connections including radio OAP's, her sack letter says "misconduct and non professionalism" which I somehow believe. If she was a professional and had half a brain, she wouldn't expose herself like this. The radio world is very easy to navigate station to station once you're inside. With this stunt, I doubt anyone would want to touch her via employment with a long pole

embarassed.... People having this problem are really suffering.

Worst is that the person will always struggle against it, yet once he/she opens mouth to speak.......boom!!?

I feel for her

You refuse to blend and adjust yourself lady.its not your employer fault. You pronounce R as Wi and expected not to be fired as OAP. While growing up some of ladies deliberately did it and it became part of them

Make she come down to Anambara state first and apply for a job interview in any of their radio stations. She might be lucky to be offered a job. grin

Accent
Diction
And proper enunciation of words, are what makes an OAP

That's why they undergo training

It's a professional job with it's own ethics and set of rules, just like every other profession.

Abi? I don't understand jàre ...OAPs are supposed to have the best pronunciation, accent etc by virtue of what they do. I've learnt correct dictions from many OAPs but why can't she put on the work and learn instead of whining? It's just like telling someone with eye defects to drive a commercial bus.

You are completely wrong, replace the "L" with "W".
L is for those with Igbo accent, not those who can't pronounce R.
I know because I am like that too. I tried to correct it when I got into the university. I started reading loud and recording it,then I will replay it,I discovered that I pronounce words like room as woom, great as gweat, treat as tweat.
I started being conscious of it and tried to correct it,I think I made progress, but later I was like f* ck it,na who that one help.
