Was it established he stole the bike? And shey the bike has been replaced, so under what crime was he still been held?
He took the company bike home. Bike got missing. Company reports to police. From that point it is no longer in the companies hand. Police charges him to court. Court places him in prison costody. His family wants peacefull settlement to stop their brother facing trial. The produce a new bike.
Note, that producing a new bike does not exonerate the biker as the police probably charged him for a stolen bike, also the company parts found in his residence.
But out of goodwill and to let bygones, be bygones, the company decided to withdraw the matter, but by the adjourned date, the biker unfortunately died In the custody of the state (prison).
Unfortunately a sad story.
But sentiments must be kept aside.

But y is our system this bad. Bicycle have been replaced, what is he still doing in the prison for God's sake. This matter will be swept under the carpet as usual cos in this country nobody fights for the masses.

Well, in most of the Actual abroad nations - not the ones Nigerians Imagine - you remain liable to prosecution at the discretion of the relevant proprietor even on returning stolen goods. If already charged successfully in court - and I imagine charged to court by prior process including police - you will remain a criminal suspect irrespective of returning the stolen property.

...forgot to add that in Real abroad as opposed to Imagined abroad, deaths, while in custody, unfortunately frequently occur. but lest I forget the humanity of the situation, condolence to the family concerned. And best wishes for the future...

The DPO smells the weed and asked him; "Do you know who I am?".

The young man exclaimed; "Only smell you smell am, and you don become DPO, wetin go happen when you smoke am?, you go become the Governor na...!!!

They've turned off commenting for all their social media posts. Irresponsible company. His brother should sue them and liquidate all their assets.

IF the boy replaced the bike and they still insisted he goes to jail then the delivery company should be held responsible.
Errand360NG are heartless. The family should push this to the end.

when u steal or commit a crime
its between u and the state
matters are not just withdrawn
he was a thief

it is sad alot of people don't know how the law works in naijeria.
Some are even claiming the company should be sued, sue the company for providing him with employment or for arresting him for stealing their bike? If his families could afford to sue he wouldn't have being a delivery man.. the police are responsible not the company. Besides suing doesn't guarantee them a win in the courts.
Same way one of my tenants "sued" me for something he clearly did wrong. Eventually he came back begging to settle outta court.

It is unfortunate a crime suspect died in prison.

If someone steals from your home and you report to the police and somehow the thief dies in the custody of the police you are the one to be held responsible? I dont understand this logic you guys paint here.

Don't mind these idiotas, it is sad a lota people don't know how the law works in naijeria, some are even suggesting the thief shoulda being released because he replaced the bike, replacing the bike doesn't give him a free pass outta jail.

The police are responsible not the company, the families cannot afford to sue anyway.

This is why i don't employ MOST naigerians.
Re: Delivery Man Remanded Over Stolen Bike In Lagos Dies In Prison by SKIBiNSKI(m): 8:45am On May 26, 2022
The company did him a favour employing him, he pays them back by stealing their bike, he clearly should not have taken the bike home against company policies.

Good riddance to a criminal, if he want to sue, sue the naijerian police! It is their responsibility to look after the thief in their custody.

Absolutely! It wouldn't ave made any different if he replaced the bike, if anything replacing the bike mitigates his denial or innocence.. He would still be liable to prosecution and maybe even a custodial sentence if found guilty.

Sad situation. This is why I like avoiding anything police case.
Detention in Nigeria can be hell.

It is not about the that, the delivery company has legally shifted the blame to the police and prison custodians. But my concern is for the remaining employees to be aware of the kind their employers are. It's terrible!
