What Does It Cost To Drill A Borehole in Nigeria These Days? by 1kTask: 9:09pm On Jun 06, 2022
I understand Lagos, Abuja and PH cost more, but what about more rural communities?

My google searches show prices between N100k - N1m, on average. If anyone has engaged the drilling of one recently, what are the prices looking like? I also understand a manual and machine drilled hole cost different.

So another is, what are the disadvantages of a manual one?

If you're wondering why I'm not asking about a specific location, it's because it's a social project and the locations haven't been chosen. Thanks!

Wow!! Used to be N3,500 - N5k range in Abuja last year.

Last year in Lagos N650k around Akute.

In Warri manual hamd drill N2m for 4k feet deep borehole.

I read manual is not a deep as machine rig. Manual im told or read is cheaper too

Is manual really cheap? Can i get the number of the person that helped you with the manual drilling?

The total cost of drilling a borehole depends on several factors. 1) The recommended depth as suggested by the geophysical survey, this will also suggest full casing or hanging casing. , Secondly the terms of reference given to the borehole contractor (some may ask the drillers to drill and install the submersible pump.

Have you done a geophysicist survey?

Maybe if you provide more information about your project, I will be able to offer a better advise. .

No, nothing has been done.

In a nutshell, it's a very small social project fund to provide water to 1 community in dire need of a clean water source.
The community hasn't been determined. We're aiming for something that will serve at least 500+ people.

We might have people on Nairaland nominate such communities and vote on one. This is something we will engage this month.
Certainly not Abeokuta, if I'm to go by the Raregem9000 quote up there.

So at this point, I'm getting basic insight on the expected cost. The total budget is only about N400k.
Another consideration to help 2 communities instead of 1 would be a manual approach, though I have doubts it can be done at 200k each. What are your thoughts?
Re: What Does It Cost To Drill A Borehole in Nigeria These Days? by Raregem9000(m): 10:12pm On Jun 07, 2022
You can't say if that amount you budgeted will be enough or not until you run a geographical survey to know what's down there.

Got it.

Since there are many communities that could benefit from it, ideally, we will narrow down to a community with a shorter aquifer depth. To keep the cost low.

Thanks for your suggestion, but the nominations I mentioned is not intended for this thread.
It will be posted later this month

As of now, the plan is for 3 categories to benefit 3 different nominated communities:

- Water supply (this borehole)
- Education (a small computer center or basic renovations to a dilapidated public school)
- Healthcare (a few hospital beds and basic supplies)

So feel free to keep an eye on that account from mid-June and on. You might also see the thread on the homepage of Nairaland.

For the bolded

The disadvantage with manual method is that,

When the guys using manpower(physical strength) comes in contact with a rock beneath the earth/ground while drilling

They will not be able to continue because they will need a machine to break the rock/stone.

U then have to pay another money for the use of a machine.

My advice is

Whenever an individual wants to do a borehole

They should go for the machine method, it will save u uncessary expenses and very fast

.

Ours was a year ago.

Location: Abia state.

Total cost was around 200k after negotiations.

Pls, the money is just for digging the borehole alone and installing those underground pipes up to the surface level.

We bought the water tank seperately and Paid a plumber to connect water to it.

We Also paid an electrician separately to do the electrical connections.

Thanks for the info. Was the actual digging done manually or machine?

How much did it cost for the entire thing to be fully functional and ready for use?

I can't tell d difference.

But I know that there where four men turning that cylindrical iron into the ground.

So, I guess...

It has to be manual.

They did a great job though cos d water is perfectly clean, odourless and tasteless.

They only installed that pumping engine inside the ground.

We also paid an electrician separately to fix that white switch to where it should be.

I see, that was definitely manual, from the videos I've seen.

How much was it after everything was done and installed? The grand total expenditure.

200k for digging d borehole.
Plus an extra 2k they insisted on for drinks and food while doing d job.

One GP tank was 65k

We spent around 25k for plumbing materials and 10k workmanship of plumber that connected the water upstairs (a 2-storey building).

There are cheaper pipes that could gave been used and costs around 1,100naira.
But the plumber insisted on using a higher quality pipe called 'bimbo' and the price was 1,900 per length. That's what made d materials costlier.

We also connected the other part of it directly to the tank downstairs.

The whole tenants fetches water downstairs from that tank.

To be honest, we've not done any electrical stuff.

I usually hook the wire of that white switch to an open wall socket downstairs (normal electrical socket), then water would start pumping.

Or sometimes, I plug it to our generator downstairs.

Upstairs, The stuff just has a mouth like a tap on top of our kitchen water-drum. Thats how we fill up our drums whenever water is being pumped.

We didn't take the GP tank upstairs because our house is old. It might not be able to carry such load again. hence, the tank wasn't placed on the rooftop again.

we don't also have 800k - 1.2 million naira to buy that BIG iron stand where tanks are placed. Thats why d tank was left downstairs.

It only runs/come upstairs when water is being pumped. Once u stop pumping water, it stops coming upstairs

We hired a Mason to mould a large block where d tank was placed so that people can fetch water from it. I wasn't around when it was done so I don't know how much it costed.

SUMMARY:

Digging borehole = 200k
Food for laborers= 2k

one GP Tank = 65k

Plumbing materials = 25k
Plumbers payment = 10k

Cements + blocks + sand = Around 30k
Masons payment = Around 10k

TOTAL= 342K.

Note: electrical work wasn't included.

If ur house is an upstair and u want to take that switch upstairs, you'd definitely buy one bundle (or more) of that wire the Water pump comes with (the one that has 4 wires inside it).

Then some other stuffs.

The electrical materials should cost u around 30k plus around 10k for workmanship.
Thats an estimate of 40k.

If ur house is a bungalow, one bundle of wire might not be needed. Hence , the electrical cost should be lower.

finally, just know that some people love putting those wires inside pipes. Just like its been done while decking a house.

If pipes are to be used , just add an extra 8k to the estimates I made (for a 2-storey building)

Or around 3k if its a bungalow

First you need a geophysical survey. It will determine the depth of the aquifer. It cost 20k for manual and about 50k for digital survey in my location (Makurdi, Benue State)

Drilling (Indian rigs)
Punching and casing is 10k-11k per meter here since disel rose to 700 per liter. It used to be 7k per meter December last year.

Another to consider is " manual, electric or solar"
The dept and the well flow rate will determine the size of pump to install.

Your best bet will be a manual pump as 400k won't be enough for electric

Please what do you mean by manual survey and digital geophysical survey. 'Cause if by manual, you mean Rod dousing, then I'm at loss for words for that 20k. Plus there's nothing scientific about that method.

There's been some serious increase in drilling price since the beginning of this year and one wouldn't blame the geologists or drillers. The government is to blame for this shit. Now, people are scared to drill boreholes so they have resorted to Wells instead.

No where wey buhari no touch

Manual borehole is just a senior well. You drill such borehole on overburden in basement area and experience draw down during dry season. If community is being considered for water supply, erase the thought of hand drilled/manual borehole completely
