This should only be enforced in the North

The constitution doesn't allow concealed carry pistol as far as I know. No one wants to be carrying around a shotgun.

The Constitution is actually silent on firearms except to consign it to the exclusive legislative list. So there is a firearms act and several supporting pieces of legislation.

That aside, yes, handguns are banned but that is a balanced way of doing things since the greatest threat Nigerians face is a home invasion or, of recent, invasive terrorism. Shotguns and sophisticated hunting rifles, are sufficient for defending against these, in my opinion.

I don't really see a reason for Nigerians to move around armed. Yes, there are threats like armed robbery, but one person, no matter how well-armed isn't going to be able to outshoot a gang of robbers with AKs. That leaves only one other purpose I can think of, which is intimidating fellow citizens over trivial disagreements. I don't think we want a society where a simple traffic disagreement can degenerate into a shootout as happens frequently Stateside.

This is not a way to go by cause in the end after the whole of insecurities had die down who will checkmate those in possession of fire arms we are not even close to a nation that deserve such rights, look at america as of today. Killings everywhere, just imagine same scenario in nigeria with the level of unemployments and frustrating situations all around and you still expect someone from such unstable countries to have access to firearms…infact the insecurities will be overwhelming …then you will be seeing corpses on every street, corners etc pls just strike off the thought of legalizing fire arms

If they believe that coming from the same DSS that knows where these terrorists stay then they're actually more stupid than I thought

I disagree.

Let the citizens decide what armament and usage they desire.

If someone wants to limit himself to shotgun then fine. But allow those of us who desire concealable weapons should be allowed too.

On this matter of violence, there are laws that govern gun usage. America is not a crazed gun country as people portray. In my 33 years I’ve only had a firearm pulled on me just twice. We don’t go around offing each other because of a fender bender.

Anyways, the Nigerian criminal elements don’t care about laws and they’re already armed too.

Alright thanks. I will seek for more information. I doubt the cooperation of the police to make it a seamless experience though, even when requirements are met. Between who issues the gun (they the police or one gets referred to a merchant)?

It's a seamless system, I'm rather sure there are some firemans dealers on NL here who can even help you with the process.

But please if you are going to own a gun ensure you know how to safely operate it, you are mentally capable of it's ownership and use and you can safely store it.

In a country like a jungle, CAN wants to legalize firearms. People just make statement with emotions and not with logic. CAN leadership should be thinking better.

In Nigeria?!

Thay will be SUICIDAL.

Even in America — an acclaimed “saner clime” — they’re already protesting the legalization of gun, after experiencing series of gun attacks orchestrated by citizens.

There will be a balance of terror. Those who are currently killing others with guns will be reluctant since their would be victims will be likely armed too

It will not bring more casualties. Once everybody knows that the next man or woman is probably armed, they will all respect themselves. Especially Fulanis

Exactly bro!
If an average Nigerian can abuse power then guns will not be left out. It suddenly become a tool for oppression.
Oppressing who? When the person you want to oppress also has access to guns

Exactly.
You can see what is happening in the US already.
The fact is government is not doing what they should with security, we really don't need gun laws if government does all that's required of them.
What has happened to national databases? Why are kidnappers making calls and can't be traced yet?
What are they doing to our porous borders?
What have they done with those pointed to be financing banditry and Boko Haram?
What about the news of herdmen being released after arrest when caught with crimes?
Why is goverment shielding those culpable unnecessarily?

If goverment can answer this and many more sincerely, we wouldn't be talking about gun legalization.
Since the government can answer and aren't ready or able to protect us, what next?

If it can't be regulated in the u.s why do you think it can be regulated here in Nigeria where the laws don't work?

They have refused to regulate it in the US not that it can't be regulated. With the right laws and policies, we can have a civil legal firearms use in this country.

However, like every other thing before it, we are known to abuse everything and for that I doubt the law will work and agree with you

Can anything be regulated in Nigeria? May be FG should start with gun license for private security firms in Nigeria so that individuals and organisations can hire them for protection.

You're right. Nothing can truly be regulated in this country. Like every other thing before it, we are known to abuse everything and even these security firms will abuse it too

CAN is so confused. The US that legalises guns is still looking for a way round it. Lot of people, probably including you saying "yes" to it, will be a victim of irrational use of gun. You better think twice.

Sad that CAN has forgotten their most potent weapon which is prayer and living in peace to the use of gun and total violence.
Fulani, you want to continue having monopoly of violence, it won't work

Mass shootings are already happening in Nigeria. If some of the Owo church members were armed, many of your Fulani Muslim brothers would have gone down and that would have reduced the casualty on the side of the church members and also made the remaining Fulani muslim killers who escaped to think twice before embarking on such mission anywhere again.
Hope you get the point now?

You've only had a gun pulled on you twice? Bros, I'd say one time is one time too many. You'd have to be seriously desensitized to gun violence to feel that having a gun pulled on you twice is normal.

But what's the argument for carrying handguns - other than just wanting it?
