Son,what's going on in Ghana? Can you inform me about their economy since I noticed many folks here are teaching them on how to run their economy. Is ghana starving now? Or are they cooking stones now?
Nothing that serious in my opinion though, at least nothing too strange so to say.
Ghana has been to the IMF 16 times since 1957 and the new NPP Government tried to break away from this tradition by developing home grown policies especially the E levies. This simply have not worked as intended and they were beginning to have investors lose faith in their economy, it was becoming difficult to find lenders as well. COVID-19 and to a smaller extent Russian-Ukraine war have also hit the economy hard, coupled with the fact that Ghana have always had problems with Inflation.

The Nana Addo Akufo Government have constantly criticised the previous Government for depending on bodies like the IMF when things go sour and they vowed to break that tradition, they vowed never to go to the IMF saying Ghana would implement Home grown solutions to the economic challenges they face.
In their words, any Government that goes the IMF way is a failure and the NPP Government (present Government) would never do that for as long as they remain in power. But now they seem to have eaten their words and are going back to the IMF for survival.

Lol, I have never even been to Ghana grin. I am fully Nigerian but used to know a half Ghanaian lady whose Mother was Nigerian and father Ghanaian and we teased ourselves in the jollof war and music thing only. She was a very patriotic Ghanaian/Nigerian and spent some time with her mum in PortHarcourt Nigeria. So while I completely took the Nigerian side in our jollof wars, she had to defend her fathers' homeland grin.

Just one Cathedral building cannot be the cause of our Economic woes, they have mismanaged our economy.

Every sensible Government uses borrowed monies for their intended purposes, they don't squander borrowed monies but not our Government. The money will finish but the project will not be done.

During Covid this Government borrowed more than any African country yet our inflation, prices of goods and services keeps going up (situation keeps getting worst) than countries that did not even borrow.
Is Ghana the only country affected by Russia-Ukraine war?

We are in this mess because of one-arrogant-clueless President and his good for nothing appointees
My sentiment exactly. No one should blame Russia- Ukraine war for Ghana's economic tumble. Ghana has been in the same situation since time immemorial - 8 decades and still counting. 17 bailouts with no concrete substance to save the situation.

The debt to GDP was high during Moi's era because of two things mainly.

1. The govt was WAY TOO corrupt - all the monies went to people's pockets and nearly zero for development. Those were the monies he went dishing around to churches every Sunday, same thing bwana asifiwe wants to return. Osiris forbid!!
2. Western sanctions.

You didnt need any magic to correct that. With or without Ndii, Kibaki would have made the correct choice. You just need common sense. Even currently its obvious that heavy borrowing has to take a back seat for the next 2-3 years. You don't need Ndii to tell you that. What I dont get is how he convinced Ruto that with 90 B he can get an ROI of 500% (500B)! That nigga is a charlatan. He is the king of sham manifestos.
I was still a toddler in Moi's regime. But as things seems to be--- that man did nothing eligible on infrastructure & ICT yet he borrowed dozen of trillions. That is a classical case of Nana... But I might be wrong.

On the flip side, I think he did something immense in the education sector.

Yes the inflation have been hitting them hard. I think they don't produce many stuff locally.importing is always costly and it lead to currency fluctuations.
If this war goes on for a year, most of these food importers nations will collapse economically

Kazikazi what happened to Tanzania female football that they failed to qualify for the African Women's Cup? Female football have been growing very fast in Tanzania since around 2008, but they seem to take one step forward, two steps backwards, same with Kenya and Ethiopia. Hopefully, Uganda would be different.

Stop behaving like a kid with no brain. You can't be posting rubbish every time you lack defense moves. Post data - debate data or do picture test: positive to positive. Stop spoiling the thread with your rubbish. Tanzania we know isn't he bottom of barrel primitive witchcraft-ridden country? You lack exposure to things which we consider 'standard' - that's why you glorify white men.

You reason like an animal.
Majority of Ghanaians were against E-levy but the Government forced his way through so it's just common sense that E-levy was never going to work despite all the projections made by the Government .

To some of us going to IMF is the best solution to a wasteful Government such as ours. With this programme it will at least control their habit of stealing state money
you're more imbecilic than the other slowpoke. Isn't IMF injecting fund into your economy. The fund that your govt as we speak, don't have.
The cash the IMF will be pumping into your economy is the money your govt thought E-levy could have raised to shore up short falls in revenue.

The problem with countries like Ivorycoast is that Ghana (though similar to Ivorycoast) cannot fully copy their model because the umbilical cords of most of these Francophone countries are tied to France. Their currency and central bank is controlled by France, this means major sectors of their economy remain stable depending on their economic relationship with France. Better models would be the likes of Morocco and Tunisia (especially Morocco) in North Africa, and they can be models not just for Ghana but for many African countries.
their problem is firstly PRIDE.
The average Ghanaian delusionally thinks Ghana is a first world country but in reality, we know it's not.
Their political scene forces the political parties to take alot of POPULIST, EGO MASSAGING DECISIONS with risky economic impacts.
for example, the free senior secondary education was a very populist/political decision given that the last administration sort for an IMF bailout towards the end of their tenure.
One would have expected the new govt to keep excessive spending at bay while placing more emphasis on economic growth and revenue generation.
The govt body language have been SPENDING AND SPENDING and not about generating more revenue.
This a country that get drunk on its own HYPE and loose control cos they enjoy being spoken good of.

I think this particular Ghanaian Government has done well in terms of PR. PR is powerful and it's something my country Nigeria needs to learn.
You are right on the populist ideas like free senior secondary school spending but these are some of the things some Ghanaians seem to love this Government for and what they brag about.
The free school thing and other socialist spendings are good ideas but not at this time and especially in their situation. But then, Ghana has stuff like Gold and Cocoa in abundance, they can get themselves out of the mess and afford the socialist spending if they manage their resources well, but that has been the bane of many African countries, hasn't it?

over 90% of African nations have nothing to do with social spending. It's the bitter truth.

Most socialist countries' citizen pay the highest tax in d world, knowing fully well that their tax will be spent on them. a proper poor African countries whose citizens can't even afford three-square meal not to talk of paying exorbitant taxes shouldn't bother about socialism but how to Firstly produce locally made goods, indirectly reducing pressure on its currency.

That free senior secondary education thing is a disaster, trust me.
The schools have been running out of food, learning put on hold cos the students say they can learn with empty stomach.
In most cases, students are asked by the school authorities to go home cos they're ran out of food
The quality too is very questionable cos how do you produce smart kids that go to school 6months in an academic year and stay for another 6 months.
I know kids who should be in SS1, who are home as we speak and will wait for 3months before it gets to their batch.
