I've heard a lot of devs here say they practised for at least 5hours+ non stop when they were learning to code. And I'm like, "is that really possible with out taking breaks in between?"
Because me, I'm still learning the fundamentals of JavaScript and to stay more that 2-3hours straight, sitting, looking at my laptop, without taking a rest is really difficult for me. So is it really possible to code for 5-8 hours nonstop without resting in between or am I just been lazy

I'm a testimony.

Back when I started learning python, I used to practice from 6am till about 5pm. Jokes apart.

Then we were on COASU strike in the college. I was back home with parents where my younger siblings did all the house chores, I was a strong introvert and had fell in love with python.

6am I'd be up.. then take like 30mins break 3 - 4 times in between which I used for food and walking.

Most times I stayed more. They was a particular day I stayed awake for 18hr coding.

It is not the number of hours that matters but rather the way you understand the content of the material you are using.

5 hours is actually small... those who enjoy coding and will go far know this is real small.... sometimes u won't even know when you've done 10hours.

Yeah but these days, I cut it short so I can balance, I realize it's better to read short hours and understand than read long hours, so multiple short hours, if I read 3 hours, I will play game 2 hours read another 2 hours, drink or take a stroll or sleep then read again. You relax the brain. 10 hours is a lot but some can do that .

It depends though, particularly on the duration you set for yourself to achieve what you want to. Like for instance, before I started, I had plan to learn all the foundational structures of frontend, from html to react js, in the space of 6 months. So I was doing 10 hours per day, with the help of coffee though. Morning, evening and midnight. Could remember I got sick at a time, but I went back to my routine after recovery, we die there. I was able to achieve it actually, but I'm used to it now. Long hours of coding might be a normal thing for a programmer I guess.

I use the Pomodoro time management technique. Go hard for 25mins. Short 5-mins break. Do this 4 times (two hours) then take a 30-min break. All those 12 hours non stop na shortcut to early health problems. Back pain

It really depends. If I am working on something interesting I could stay on my computer for 6 hours 7 hours non stop but if I am working on something boring meh lipsrsealed

Dem no dey tell person. Your back go surely give you loud phone call. One of my biggest advice for those fortunate to be working remote)especially those working multiple jobs simultaneously) is to place a premium on your health. If you collapse today, your employer go drop you like hot akara.

Go hard. But also prioritise your health.

Fo sure! There are some stuff you'd be doing and you have entered "the zone". To stop will be almost impossible.

Recently I was developing an automated spreadsheet that would crash my effort from 1hr to a few minutes. Took me almost 4 hours to set the spreadsheet cos I was also researching some excel stuff while trying to setup the spreadsheet. I worked straight 4 hours without knowing. If you are in "that zone", my advice is to stay there until the entire task is done.

Go hard or go home

Sometimes you exceed that 25-mins of going hard o. But the technique has been a huge life Saver for me. I focus on breaking my back hard to get those minutes of respite

Congratulations, we are satisfied you'd make a great fit for our team "culturally".

Would you be interested in the technical fit phase, where you will be inundated with a small set of
non-rudimentary algorithmic problem sets? angry

PS: I learned a new buzz word recently - C.V driven software development grin

I once tried to speed run the all the easy problems on the warm-up and implementation sections of hackerank, 8 warm-up and 40 implementation problems. I solved all the warm-ups but was only able to do 26 implementations before I burned out, it took 17.5 hrs. So yeah, most of the time you wouldn't even notice you've been coding for 5+ hrs.

People do program for 5 hours + but most of those hours is used for thinking. But for coding in order to code for 5hrs + would involve a lot of creativity from your part because coding != Programming

Five hours?...That's chicken time... When you get into the zone and in that particular workflow, you'd be blowing 10 hours straight like its nothing.. one time, I was so engrossed that I never saw the sun in four days, the only thing I cared about was coding, bathing, eating and sh**ting until I got the job done...Now, I got a technical test of an interview for a remote AI engineering gig out there in New Zealand...So its back to the trenches, running 15-hour code sprints for 5 days straight.. f**k...

It's not about the hours spent..

It's about the amount of projects you can come up with.

This is the mistake newbies make.

Only 5 hours? Unless you are not building any project. If you are, then before you know it 10 hours has gone. Coding is fun

Im a newbie also I code from 10 am till 5/6 pm depending on when my folks get back. Then resume from 12 am till 4am and wake up 8am and repeat.

There's a lot of shit in between the top and the trenches, where I'm at currently, that you don't get to see.

The goal is that by next year I'll be the CEO of Microsoft.

May the powers that be help me

It's still time (hours, minutes days) you use to come up with those projects... Technical it's still hours spent

Those who complain about time spent just don't love coding.

They simply went into it to get the good life they've been told.

They never told them what happens behind the scenes grin

Please coding is not fun 90% of the time, except it's just those to-do app kind of projects you're working on angry , or na just simply DOM manipulation grin ...
Try and attempt game design and go and cry. You think JS is easy abi? Game design with it will change what you know about it

Somedays it feels like 24hours is not enough. 5 hours is nothing when you have a major project at work and you still go ahead to collect side gigs. Story of my life.

I dont know about you. But there is this joy I feel when I finally get a line of code to work after getting different kind of errors, which when u solve one another pops up, you solve than one , another pops up. To be able to do that on my own without makes it fun for me , making me want to code more.
