Fact Check: Did Tinubu Change His Name From Yekini Amoda Ogunlere? by Ekundayo7574(m): 5:39am On Jul 22, 2022
A claim that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu changed his name over the years to what he currently bears has gone viral.

A Facebook user, Jackson Ude, had on Sunday made a post on a page, Nigeria Cycle, alleging that Tinubu had another name on his primary and secondary school certificates.

Nigeria Cycle was created on July 6, 2020 with the name, Edo Citizens Forum. It was changed to Bellview Org on the 20th of the same month and later to Nigeria Cycle on August 22, 2020.

The page has 9,913 people who like it and 12,227 followers. A search of the website on the page, www.nigerevent..com, did not yield any useful information as to the identity of the user and their mission.

The post reads: “Bola Tinubu’s real name is: Yekini Amoda Ogunlere from Iragbiji Osun State. That is what is contained in his primary and secondary school certificates and that’s why he has refused to tender them before INEC.”
Verification

Daily Trust found that the claim had once gone viral on nairaland in August 2014 and is only being recirculated.

On Twitter, a user @Officialmanny4 had also alleged that, “Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s real name as contained in his primary school certificate is ‘Yekini Amoda Ogunlere’ from Iragbiji Osun state. He changed to Tinubu after being wanted for drugs related crime in the 70s in US. That’s why he didn’t tender them (the certificates) to INEC.”

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Friday published the personal particulars of 16 presidential candidates and their running mates who will be contesting the 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu did not provide any information on his primary and secondary education neither did he attach certificates for his tertiary education.
Instead, he attached an affidavit to the INEC form where he claimed that his certificates were stolen after he went on exile during the late General Sani Abacha era.

The affidavit reads: “I went on self-exile from October 1994 to October 1998. When I returned, I discovered that all my property, including all the documents relating to my qualifications and my certificates in respect of paragraph three above, were looted by unknown persons.

“My house was a target of series of searches by various security agents from the time the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was forced to adjourn following the military takeover of government of 17th November, 1993.

“I was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, banking and finance. I was also a plaintiff in one of the two suits against the interim national government in 1993.

“I went on exile when it became clear to me that my life was in danger,” Tinubu said in his claim.
However, Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, didn’t capture any previous change in Tinubu’s name.

Nigerians have been reacting to Tinubu’s inability to state the names of schools he attended and produce copies of his certificates. This claim is believed to have fuelled such speculations that he either did not school as presumed or he is hiding some details about himself that could mar his chances in the forthcoming election.

Conclusion
There is no sufficient evidence to support the claim that Bola Ahmed Tinubu changed his name in the past for whatever reasons and he has always held that he is from Lagos State.

If they really wanted to fact check, then they would investigate the schools he went to in nigeria for primary & secondary education.

If that can't be done, the man should be left alone. Nigerians will decide his fate one way or another come 2023.

Why would any sane human being with full cognitive capacity ever consider voting a man with the qualities listed below.

1. Over seventy years old and exhibiting obvious signs of senility and dementia.

2. With many serious health challenges, including but not limited to incontinence as a result of loss of bladder control, tremulous limbs as a result of nerve damage, etc.

3. Highly questionable and criminal past, including deep involvement in the underworld of trade in narcotics, thereby earning himself the infamous tag of a drug lord.

4. Highly corrupt and a kleptomaniac who has maintained a stranglehold on the coffers of Lagos state from 1999 till date. Massively looting the state treasury and favouring only his cronies and family members.

5. A man exhibiting dictatorial tendencies with the way he single handedly decides who becomes governor in Lagos, deputy governor, commissioner, house of assembly, house of reps, senator, etc, bullying and fighting anyone who goes contrary to his directives and orders. His fights with and bullying of Fashola and Ambode comes to mind.

6. A man with no verifiable sound educational background. His reason for not providing his primary and secondary school certificates to INEC are as flimsy and watery as can be.

7. A man who institutionalized Agberoism and made thuggery his legacy in Lagos state with a large number of known criminals such as MC Oluomo as his foot soldiers.

8. A man who was alleged to be behind one of the most heinous and atrocious crimes in Lagos state, the toll gate massacre of 20th October 2020.

9. The man who is known for the subversion of due process, including electoral fraud and rigging, and vote buying through financial inducement, with a case in point being the 2019 election where bullion vans stuffed with looted funds were seen within his premises, ostensibly to bribe the electorate into voting his anointed candidate and puppet.

10. A man with no clearcut agenda and manifesto for improving the fortunes of Nigeria or improving the economy of Nigeria other than to conscript 50 million youths into the Nigerian army and feeding them maize and cassava.

Tell me which sane human being would vote this man as president of Nigeria.

Lol

Nonsense.

Why not provide evidence that his name has remained the same all through his life by showing copies of his certificates, both primary and secondary schools.

This fact check thing is becoming a nuisance.

Una go sweat tire trying to defend the indefensible. Una think say Nigeria be Lagos.

Now answer these...

What made him to conceal and signed a secrecy document with the University her allegedly attended, for them not to expose his records with the school?

What name did he tender to the school at admission?

Let his admission form be made available, let see the details of his primary and secondary school as well as his real name.

If he doesn't allow these, then his name stands... You haven't fact checked anyghing! Try again.

What type of biased fact check is this one. This is a fact check executed by urchins trying to whitewash a dirty cloth. The only proof to counter that should have been his primary and secondary school certificates, or documents he has dating back to the period he was born that has his names.

These urchins think people are as daft as they are or that we take the same type of drugs they peddle about, all he needs to do is go to his school and apply for a new certificate and so long as his records are there, it will be provided. His secondary school should be waec or GCE, those examination bodies are still very much in existence and will gladly help him search for his non existent results grin grin grin

Tinubu is who he claims to be

Having said that, we should not vote for him because

1. He was not that spectacular as Lagos governor...his successor did better than him

2. He is the candidate of APC....a party that has failed over the last 7 years in running this country effectively.

Even though its true that he changed his name,I did not see that as a crime as we've witnessed in the past when some people changed from one believe (Religion) to another and changed their names completely including their family names (Surname).

These people and falsehood are like 5 and 6. The way they lied and claimed Buhari is dead and our president is from Sudan.
Nigerians can believe anything sha, especially when it satisfies their sentiments.
Let the sensible and less emotional ones in Nigeria try as much as possible to fact check every news and information you come across, especially as we approach the general elections.

It is within his right to change his name but not to seek to obliterate his identity. He must belong to the dark world to be about such sinister actions. It is indeed a sin and his roots will not forgive him for that!
The Yoruba have a lot not salutary to say about the individual who denigrates his ancestral compound by showing it to others pointing with his left hand: the fellow is certain to not end well but for God’s mercy!
His personal house at Iragbiji, Osun State where, in reality, he hails from, is across the road from The Aragbiji’s Palace but our so called Nigerian investigative journalists will not find the yellow bungalow! It was only when BBC was ready that we got to know about the existence of “The Cold Room” at The University of Lagos Staff Club. His time will come someday when his fake identity will come crashing down like a pack of cards! His shame will be unprecedented! Only repentance can prevent that from happening!
