Beginning
After our wedding, my wife kept having baby fever. She was always sending me IG videos and talking about how cute a baby was, but I dey run. So finally in October(6 months after our wedding) after much discussion & prayer we agreed to start trying, thinking at least by December the baby suppose enter. Next thing, my wife started feeling a bit sick and decided to do a PT(Pregnancy Test) at home. Omo, this baby no calm down. Na that October gangan, e come. E shock me. �

Funny enough we go do blood PT later for one hospital like that, they said it was negative. I’m like shey una dey whine me ni. Something wey I don see for like 3 strips. We go somewhere else to do another test, which turns out positive and we register there for ANC(Antenatal Care).

1st Trimester
Anyways moving on, 1st trimester was something else. Because there was a lot of nausea, and a lot of vomiting, my wife could barely keep anything down. Also, I was doing most of the cooking, so she could not smell what I was cooking if not she won’t eat. She also said I can’t be using my body spray. No be small thing. There was one time she was vomiting so bad, that her throat was hurting, I think she even vomited blood. I kept trying to do what I can to help.

Then 8th Dec, I see my wife on the bathroom floor, vomiting and water pouring on her head. I have never been so scared, I immediately carried her to the hospital. They admitted her, gave her something to stop the vomiting, and IV fluids. After that, things got a bit easier.

2nd Trimester
Then the 2nd trimester my wife was able to eat more, thankfully. Being pregnant in the heat is crazy. Cos we dey on the fan and AC down. She was having a lot of waist and back pain though, so I was doing a lot of massages. We found out the sex of the baby and I was feeling the baby’s movements.

3rd Trimester
3rd trimester, my wife’s appetite increased but she wasn’t gaining more weight. Cos na baby dey chop am. I continued my duty of sorting food and making sure she was comfortable, cos na both of us get the baby. We switched hospitals to one that’s closer to us, to switch sef na wahala cos first hospital dey delay to give us the medical report.

We are in Week 39 and Gynae said if the baby doesn’t come out by Week 41, she will be induced. Omo. Wahalur
Naso we start with pineapples, dates, plenty jogging, yoga & bedroom workout � make the baby come quick quick.
So when we went for week 40 checkup, and the Doctor decided to do a scan to check if there was still enough fluid in the womb, na so baba talk we have to schedule a c-section tomorrow cos the baby is big(like papa�).

I confuse small, but I recompose. They didn’t let my wife even leave with me, they said they will prep her that night. So I went home to get our hospital bags and some food.

Labour day
By 7 am, they start prepping my wife for surgery. 8 am they begin, 8:09 am, the child is out. Every other thing was done before 9 am. Mother & Child are alright, We thank God.

Mama, please visit a doc fast. I'm in the same shoes; ttc for four years after the birth of my daughter. Had a miscarriage in between.

Now I'm experiencing off-and-on morning sickness. No vomiting whatsoever, although I have bouts of nausea.

Been spotting since the fifth week and have been placed on weekly progesterone and strict bed rest.

God will come through for us all.

No matter what happens please trust God. When I went through a miscarriage I prayed and cried and slept on my side for almost 12 hours in pain. I refused to get up so I won't spot. Ended up in the hospital the next day and the worst had happened. I was so discouraged that God after all my prayers, but I held on to the faith. Exactly a year later I was in the same hospital on the labor and delivery ward to have my baby. Anxiety and desperation are tools the devil uses. God will answer His names in your life, over this situation and you will carry your children.

If i understood him well prepation started around 7am and the surgery started around 8am and baby was out by 8:10am. All these does not mean that the surgery was completed baby was out and if possible taken away for attention while the surgery would be completed.

#What

What is ANC

This is a SPECIAL care given to all confirmed pregnant women. It is the routine health check and control of presumed healthy pregnant women without symptoms (screening), with aim of diagnosing any ongoing diseases or complications that might arise from the ongoing pregnancy. During ANC, pregnant women with/ without symptoms are provided information about lifestyle, pregnancy and delivery.

#When

When should ANC start? At what month is the right time to start antenatal?

• This can vary depending on your location, but globally, it is advised, you start as early as possible. Matter of fact, the earlier you start attending antenatal check-ups the better. The World Health Organization recommends that pregnant women should commence ante natal visit at the second missed period.
• So, I will personally say, as soon as you confirm you are clinically pregnant with ultrasound, start. It is better to start early, than to start late!
• The globally accepted schedule is as follows.:
• Start as soon as possible and then attend antenatal check-ups once a month until 28 weeks.
• After, 28 weeks, attend twice a month until you are 36 weeks pregnant.
• After 36 weeks, and during the last 4 weeks of your pregnancy you should go every week.
FYI, this can vary depending on your location and hospital. Women with high risk pregnancy will start EARLY!
• In this WHO recommends, a total of four visits which are made for uncomplicated pregnancies. This is however flexible, it can be more or less depending on the status/ health of the pregnancy. The arrangement is usually flexible.

#Why

So, why ANC?

During your first visit, which is called booking visit, you will be subjected to series of investigations, this will generally vary from one region of the world to another based upon the most prevalent health conditions that constitute risk to the pregnant women and the baby.

#Recommendation

Investigations During ANC

These will include:

1. Urine test for sugar and proteins.

2. Blood test for blood group, genotype, HIV screen, screen for syphilis, and screen for hepatitis B.

3. An obstetric ultrasound scan done to confirm the wellbeing of the baby. The early ultrasound scan apart from confirmation of the pregnancy is very useful for accurate dating of the pregnancy. Late scan is not, as accurate.

#Vaccines

Vaccines Needed in Pregnancy, Any recommended number?

This is once again dependent on your location/ region of the world. There are no fixed numbers. They are given on need basis.
1. Tetanus toxoid immunization is also given to the pregnant women
2. You should get the Tdap vaccine (to prevent, specifically whooping cough/ pertussis)
3. Flu vaccine
4. Hepatitis B
5. Some women may need other vaccines before, during, or after they become pregnant. For example, if you have a history of chronic liver disease, your doctor may recommend the hepatitis A vaccine.
6. If you work in a lab, or if you are traveling to a country where you may be exposed to meningococcal disease, your doctor may recommend the meningococcal vaccine.

WHO Declarations

Good care during pregnancy is important for the health of the mother and the development of the unborn baby. Pregnancy is a crucial time to promote healthy behaviors and parenting skills. Good ANC links the woman and her family with the formal health system, increases the chance of using a skilled attendant at birth and contributes to good health through the life cycle.
