Mehn, freelancing would make you realize how bad they see Nigerians

Joined Fiverr and made my first gig with a US lady who asked me to transcribe a 1 hour audio file into text. Billed her $35 and completed the job within 24 hours. She was pleased and tipped me $5 join.

Few weeks later, she employed me again for a 1 min video and paid $5 (tipped me $5 again)

Throwback to today, that's the only job I got on Fiverr. She even left me a 5 star review on my profile and still that didn't help me at all

I had thousands of impressions on my gigs and close to 20 clicks. None of those clicks turned into gigs which I was fucking sure of the fact they saw Nigeria on my profile


One stupid myth is they don't believe we know how to speak good English.

It was five years for me. In 2020, I took a break from work. For one year I massively upskilled. Got three certifications: Product Design, Product Management, and Project Management, plus a 5-month internship with a company in the UK offered through Almond Careers in a role that combined aspects of each specialization.

Prior to the upskilling, I made $$ 10-12, but after it, in 2021, I became qualified for roles that pay more than $25 per hour, off Upwork, and with benefits. Inasmuch as where someone is right now is a good starting point, I wish I hadn't lingered at the beginner level for too long. Someone who used to work on Upwork in UI/UX that I know now works in Ireland and getting more than $150k per annum just because they advanced their skills so well, got into Toptal, worked for Loom, and then a European fintech employed him mid-2021.

We will all get there, hopefully, or even found startups that will create jobs.

One thing is do research and don't stop updating your CV to keep searching for a better job.

Unlike your Nigerian 9-5 where you can do eye service and carry files from one place to another to look busy, with remote work, it is survival of the fittest. When you see the listed requirements, you would know you haven’t started.

I started from Fiverr 2019 and graduated from there to work for a full remote company. It was hell working at Fiverr. You are literally competing with the whole world when submitting proposals.

If you are a top-notch professional as a software engineer, designer, finance expert, product manager, or project manager, forget about Upwork, Freelancer.com, Fiverr, etc., and go to Toptal because that's where top talents are and where high-net-worth companies usually hire. It is more vigorous with its screening process, but that is where you will make real money and stay steadily advanced. And you don't need any introduction to get things done.

I never understood Fiverr. Its UI was quite confusing to me. Freelancer and co were filled with scammers. So I fell back to Upwork.

Yes to every penny is your sweat. If you are not working, you are not earning. I saw this guy that made $100k in a year. A Nigerian in this same Nigeria with us.

Many people think it is only tech bros and sis that make it in freelance. I also saw a Nigerian HR personnel charging $45/hr. I saw another lawyer at almost $100/hr. I have not seen many tech people, but I know they are there sha.

Previously it was some hours here and there. I would always ask how much time I had to deliver. Time management is very important here.

I only went full-time recently and one has to go. I am sure you know which would go. My full-time role is off Upwork. Though I still have my initial contract on. Helps to warm my account.

It depends on several things sha.
If na tech u definitely need laptop.
If its ui/ux you'll need laptop, same with data entry.
If its writing you might not need a laptop, but to fully register for most freelancing sites you'll need one.
