Fuel Subsidy: Nigeria Facing Existential Threat, World Bank Warns by Trumpcard05: 5:00am On Aug 11, 2022
In light of Nigeria’s dwindling revenue, the continued payment of trillions of naira on fuel subsidy by the government and the attendant economic challenges, the World Bank on Wednesday raised the alarm that the country might be facing an existential threat.

The international financial institution warned that if the country failed to optimise its tax system and focus on other areas to boost its revenue, the already low revenue would continue to drop. It noted that despite the rise in the price of oil in the international market, Nigeria had not reaped the benefits because of the huge amount spent on fuel subsidy.

The Senior Public Sector Specialist, Domestic Resource Mobilisation, at the World Bank, Mr Rajul Awasthi, said these at a virtual pre-summit, with the theme ‘Critical Tax Reforms for Shared Prosperity’, organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group on Wednesday. He insisted Nigeria would have to eliminate the subsidy regime eventually.

After the Federal Government earmarked about N4tn for subsidy payment in 2022, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said recently that government might spend a whopping N6.72tn as fuel subsidy in 2023 or pay N3.36tn up to mid-2023 if the subsidy regime would was to end in May 2023.

Also, the minister had consistently said the nation was battling with revenue problems, which had compelled the government to keep borrowing. The debt stock had risen to N41.6tn in the first quarter of 2022 with projections that it could peak at N45tn by the end of the year. Nigeria is rated the fifth on the list of the World Bank’s debtors, with $11.7bn debt stock as of June 30, 2021.

The International Monetary Fund had in March projected that Nigeria might spend 93 per cent of its revenue on debt servicing in 2022, but the minister disclosed a few weeks ago that about 119 per cent of the country’s revenue was spent on debt servicing. This implied that government had to borrow to meet its debt financing obligations, a development many economists had described as disturbing and unsustainable.

The virtual event, anchored by the PwC’s Fiscal Policy Partner and Thematic Lead, NESG Fiscal Policy and Planning Thematic Group, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, was attended by several stakeholders, including the representative of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Executive Secretary of the Joint Tax Board, Mrs Nana-Aisha Obomeghie.

Meanwhile, in a slide he shared during his presentation, which showed Nigeria’s Development Update, Awasthi explained that between 2015 and 2019, Nigeria’s non-oil revenues were among the lowest in the world and as a result the second lowest in spending, and that oil revenues were also falling even when oil prices were higher.

He stated, “Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa and the largest country in Africa by population, so it is critical to Africa’s progress. There is no doubt about that. But the government of Nigeria, from the public finance perspective, is really facing an existential threat. Let’s not downplay the situation. That is the actual reality.

We are presently living beyond our means.
The present regime has no strong financial and economic experts.
From Emefieke, to minister of finance, budget planning, are all clueless.
Increasing debt profile after depleting all reserves.
We are plunging into something worst than recession.
The next government has a lot to do.
That's why we must be very Obidient in our Civic responsibility by 2023

Tinubu already issued same advisory to government very recently.

Tinubu continues to highlight risk areas and advise on policies that global institutions agree with and back.

Tinubu is a PLACE HOLDER for gov Shettima, the earlier you people realize this the better oo.

Most of this people pushing this Drug Lord doesn't know there's an agenda to just install him by fire by force and when he is tired and sick before 2 years, Shettima will be swear in as president and more kabiru sokoto will be hiding in his house.

Even Yaradua was way stronger than him before he became president

Stop blaming people for voting Jonathan out in 2015. Jonathan spent about 6 years in power and had proven himself incapable of helping the country. It was obvious he wasn't the answer and people just needed a change.

Before then, Buhari had tried like 3 times but he couldn't defeat Obasanjo, Yaradua and even Jonathan at first. But since Jonathan did not work, and Buhari was the main alternative then, people had little choice than to give him a try then. It is a simple happenstance and we can't really blame anyone for voting Buhari then.

But now we have a choice.

Peter Obi for 2023.

I strongly believe President Buhari will fully remove fuel subsidy immediately after 2023 elections..

Once the winner is declared..

He will remove it and face the backlash..

Elections would have come and gone...so the fear of instability and masses unrest beyond control won't be there.

We will suffer it...but, it's the best for this country.

Buhari has totally destroyed the zoo.
What we are awaiting is the burial.
Any southern people becoming president will be blamed for all the problems ,just like good luck.

The zoo is built on faulty foundations, know this and know the truth.

Constantly shouting Obi or tinubu online does not change anything.

You quoted a very good piece but failed to apply it properly, maybe you did not understand the english very well. FYI, the line is asking government to make an effective use of the taxes but your principal Tinubu advice was for government to tax more people and things. and by the way, Peter Obi left Anambra better than he met it.
example of what Tinubu was talking about https://www.nairaland.com/1577881/imagine-radio-television-home-use#20625930

Politicians have failed this country. How come we keep pandering to their whims and caprices? But my people never want to learn from their past errors. They keep repeating the same over and over again. Why would any reasonable Nigerian ever follow folks like Reno and the kogi dude with exotic cars -what’s the name again? These are part of the political class whose policies are designed to enrich themselves at the expense of the masses. They are charlatans, frauds masquerading as political analysts.

Look at the mess they have brought upon the economy, with idiocratic policies.
The looming inflation will be on steroid for an import-dependent nation. Nigeria customs have raised surface duty to a minimum of 3 Million. For some age of cars - I think 2002-made cars and upward- are paying over a million duty minimum. It going to be tough for government to further raise revenue through customs. and they don’t have the brains to think of a more sophisticated taxing regime other than using “o wo mi da” boys for a largely informal economy.

I am afraid the “Japa” exercise will continue. Many have lost hope on this entity. Doctors and nurses are leaving to west. Since this is a good export for an impoverished country, why can’t we build more nursing schools and medical schools? Train more of them and export to the west..... this is a no brainer!

Nigeria needs a radical leader, a person with the cojones to stick a finger at the hornets nest and tell the rampaging politicians, “o to ge!” .... a person who will tell the Nigeria people, “ change your way.” ..... to the churches, “ stop the scam.” A leader who can think and enact policy that would revive the dearth of the nation.

We need a Sankara!

The brother of Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi Vp, is an avid anti-Igbo. As far Hakeem Baba-Ahmed is concerned, Ibo should be kicked out of Nigeria. He said this just 3 months or so ago.

There is a second impeachment in Obi's future is he should win. They know he is politically weak, they will use him to clean out ipob and after he is done they dispose him.

I'd stick with Tinubu whose death will be statutorily treated with Shettima taking oath, than to bet on a weakling that fulani will turn to kick out to regain power.

Na them sabi.

Many of these urchins are blinded by tribal hatred and their love for corruption , that's why they peddle lies about Tinubu achievements and hope to have selective amnesia about his criminality. Atiku is a known criminal as well, however he is better than Tinubu.

Take a look at Peter obi, an incorruptible man, a money manager, a builder, a man of integrity, who has earned even the respect of his enemies. Yet people don't want to follow him boldly. We understand why. It goes beyond tribal or religious bias.

Many today have benefited from Buhari's incompetence, they go to him and get favours because he cannot read , they present Bogus corrupt documents to him and he allows them ste directly from the nation's coffers, they would love a continuation of same. They see a worse Buhari in Tinubu, the north see a yar a dua in Tinubu and have planted their man to revenge on their behalf, while the corrupt are going for a tinubu to continue the massive graft going on in Nigeria.

If you have no other country to call yours, reject PDP and APC. It is your right as a citizen of Nigeria. It is our only hope to start the process of redemption for Nigeria. If we all miss this opportunity, we have placed ourselves on the path of doom.

Alot of obidients are middle class, alot of them have an education, alot of them will have and demonstrate the capacity to leave Nigeria if things go south. We will leave you all here when the tears of sorrow starts. Choose a person of integrity and end impunity in Nigeria.

Be obidient and yusful.

Lol, with the revenue Lagos is getting, yet can't compete with cities like Dubai as a result of corruption organize by Mr billion vans. The revenue of Lagos is equal to or greater than the federal allocation of 10states in Nigeria. You guys should fine another story to tell us not using Lagos as an achievement.
