Central Database for arrest will curb unwholesome activities- AGF

September 3, 2022

The Federal Government has launched a central database where records of arrest will be uploaded by the relevant agencies.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, launched the database in Abuja on Friday.

Explaining the rationale behind the project, Mr. Malami said the office of the AGF was mandated by section 29(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 to establish an electronic and manual database of all records of arrest at the Federal and state level.

The AGF explained that the record system will allow all relevant agencies to upload their record of arrest with an approved passcode which will be made available to them.

The Solicitor General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Mrs Beatrice Jedy-Agba who represented the AGF, said it would enable all arrests in Nigeria to be properly captured for monitoring.

The Component Manager of the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption British Council, RoLAC, Oluwatoyin Badejegbin while handing over the design for the database, said its aim is to provide clear records for easy access, curb unwholesome activities of some arresting agencies and keep track of criminals.

If criminal records are shared nationwide in Nigeria, there is a possibility that Nairaiand will lose some of its most respected "elder statesmen" who will be forced to go into hiding over their criminal records being combined and correlated to show the grand total wayo and wuru-wuru played, residential burglaries perpetrated, carjackings carried out, the full listing of all stolen property they received, together with a tally of all bank fraud arrests suffered.

If the person that is cut out on the left is Alfa (beanpole) then that is the top 7 people in government between 1987 and 1989.

l-r) Possibly Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Alfa (chief of Air Staff), Major General Sani Abacha (chief of Army Staff), Vice Admiral Augustus Aikhomu (chief of General Staff), General Ibrahim Babangida (president and commander in chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria), Lieutenant General Domkat Bali (minister of defence and chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff), Rear Admiral Patrick Koshoni (chief of Naval Staff) and Alhaji Muhammadu Gambo (inspector general of police).

Beautiful cheesy. Long time coming. Thanks naptu2 for this.

Was wondering when we will start using our facilities to the best use. Alagbon comes to mind lipsrsealed

It will also help in background check. No need to queue and wait a long time to query a person's criminal records (if any). Just pay the fees online and check the records.

It wasn't hard for me to get the record of someone who died in SA by just paying the required fees and the record and date of death received.

This is beautiful and long overdue. Problem is that the Nigeria Police has a history of arresting innocent citizens wrongly, this should be seriously looked into before some innocent persons names will enter the wrong register.

Funny people, how many police stations, NSCDC offices, NDLEA offices get computer not to talk of network? Do they even keep records manually? How will it work?

Along with Biometrics too.

If we've had this since the 80s, Baba Agbado's real name, age, etc. wouldn't be a controversy now.

Obviously, it's past crimes and arrests that makes people change name easily in this country.
