Your annual rent shouldn't exceed your two months salary. If it does, you're in the wrong apartment.

You people will just lift content from Twitter and other places and post here.

What is your goal?

Okay, let's even address the actual point: how did you arrive at the 20% figure?

Most high paying jobs are located on the island in Lagos

The very few good paying job on the mainland are around Ikeja and the likes

Which high paying job can you get in Badagry, ojo, ikorodu, et al
You are here looking for high paying jobs when someone is cashing out daily online by just doing some Copywriting jobs

I'm sure you don't live in Lagos... Some people in Lagos spend all their income on rent alone just to to be able to survive the stress of this city while some people in this same Lagos can comfortably pay their 2 years rent from their 1 month income..
It's best everyone does what works for them..

This may sound somehow but I tell you my peeps, the OP is very right. If we continue to live beyond this we will continue to live in abject penury. Im a salary earner, I rent my family house 4 hours away to my place of work @less than 20% of my two months salary and I got a very unbeffing one at a trecking distance to my place of work. Wisdom is key here. One must find a way to save money by fire by force or else there wont be progress. Save money and invest no matter what. For me my principle is if I wont work anywhere I wont be able to save money.

You must decide for yourself

And weigh all the pros and cons.

It is not a straight line.

I have a colleague who had a place in ikorodu. We worked in apapa.

Guy would leave home four every morning to beat traffic.

One time there was bunkering in his area. Another time those notorious cultists whose name I forget

Too many people think that you can sacrifice peace of mind, convenience and security on the altar of don't be foolish with your money.

To each his own

lol how do u people save for investments. Only rent took 1800, what of water bills, electricity bills, phone bills, groceries and other miscellaneous expenses. Looking like a rat race to me sorry to say that.
All those things you mentioned cannot be more than £1500
Now add that to £1800 you have £3300. total monthly expenses.
€1200 is still left. Is that not good savings for a single person?
Imagine if you have a wife who is equally working and making the same.
It means your total household saving could be up to €3000 a month,

Honestly it is because they want to. I was born in Lagos, I know Lagos very well, I atteded my secondary school at victoria Island. Any one that continues to live his life this way is only beckoning on poverty. It is very wrong. Just go around toll gates on monday mornings and friday evenings you will see how people move in and out of Lagos. Wise people now build in places like Papa, Itori, Ibafo amd even Ibadan, they move into Lagos on mondays and move out on fridays.

I really should level up a little... Just realised that my rent is just 3% of my estimated minimum yearly income... No wonder I have too much disposable income to lavish on things Nigerians consider as luxuries cheesy

Bachelorhood is bliss if you have a sustainable income and live within your means.

That's one thing I'll forbid when I take over power as a tyrant ruler of this nation.

You can't build house 20 years ago and be increasing rent today, that's pathetic and criminally in nature.

When I become a ruler, no citizen Will own land or build houses.... I will seize All lands and houses,, build more houses and lease it to all citizens for as low as 5k_20k highest yearly rent. Every citizen deserves a place to sleep

love your dream...

It is disheartening when a 10 years old house landlord increase rent like he just finished building it yesterday. I feel you OP.

When you build your own house please collect the same rent for 30 years even if there is high rate of inflation in the country!

I do tell my friends, if one month income can't pay for your rent, problem don dey already, you just don't know it yet.

That's not realistic unless you earn very well and live far beneath you rmeans.

But why do that to yourself? Home is where you spend the vast majority of your time so realistically, you should spend on rent, an amount you can afford to save up within a few months. Knowing how most people struggle to save, I would suggest a maximum of 3 months.

The real issue is that in Nigeria landlords collect rent for a full year, which is unfair and should be done away with. The global standard is monthly rent payment, obviously, because people don't get paid annually, but monthly.

Even here In enugu, most decent houses cost more than 20% of your annual salary and you can't go lower than the house you live in because the price is also too much, so you find your self struggling to pay for house rent, feed, transport Yourself. This life no easy ooo

My annual rent is just 20% of a month salary.

The problem becomes exacerbated due bad transportation systems and inefficiency moving from point a to point b if not, one can comfortably live in ibadan board a speed train or any other efficient transport systems to work without delay to Lagos same day. But you see those recketty busses, those ones go just mk dem sack you first of resumption, no cap.

You're right! In countries where there are transportation system that works, you don't experience all these.

In Nigeria, we've come to accept poor standard of living as a norm because most of us don't even know better. Go to the UK for example, see transport system, you'll marvel.

I thought folks said it shouldn't exceed 3 months, what happened again?

The truth is, we may need to consider qualitative factors. I stay in Lagos and my three month pay covers my rent of 1.1M (2 bed). The advantages are the neighbourhood, the calibre of people I am exposed to, the change in mindset, the relatively short time to work (1.5hrs), more time to relax and think better.

My friends that stay afar because it is cheap are dying slowly. Having to set out as early as 5am. We only need to be wise. Live and let's live, no hard and fast rule.

Anything that works for me, all this theory no dey work for Lagos.

Do whatever is cool for your mental and physical wellbeing.

I work on the island, rent in New garage was expensive, then I move to Alimosho into a nice room and parlour self-contained, the t- fare is just too much ( imagining spend 2200k per day)

Now I'm planning on moving back to Iyana-oworo this December.

I can't kill myself.
