I have noticed with keen interest how the Yoruba language has become the major language of use in Nigerian commercial and entertainment sectors.

Igbo use to be especially in Nollywood but since the past two decades, Yoruba language has been the choice language in our music industry, and recently, it is gradually taking over the movie industry too.

Even most Nigerian slangs on socials media (Twitter, Facebook,etc.) are mostly of Yoruba Origin.

I know Lagos, a Yoruba dominated state and commercial capital of Nigeria, plays a major role in these. However, their tendency to infuse their culture in whatever they do thereby propagating it cannot be ignored also.

The "soft power" is getting stronger year by year and this will play a major role in Nigerian future politics and Africa at large.

What are others not doing? Why are we slacking?

SouthSouth have Ijaws, Istekiri, Ogbia, Benin that have little bit of understandable Yoruba phrases in them

North Central States like Kwara and Kogi have Yorubas

Even Togo and Benin in West Africa have people that can speak some Yoruba, including Brazil


Take Entertainment, Nollywood and Afrobeat all have major artist and market in Lagos

Religion like Christianity and Islam also connects State

They have no choice ,all non Yorubas must learn it by force by fire..or remain in ur devastated region forever..

Lagos ogun and oyo ...people from other regions are brimming into these 3 states every day and night ..

Even as a non-Yoruba I enjoy listening to the language, it's funningly sweet.....When I was in south west few years back I enjoyed listening to neighbours quarrel. They always crack me up when the insults start raining, you will hear words like oloriburuku, òmò-ale, oloshi like 200times before the quarrel would end.


I left after I gained admission and didn't have the opportunity to learn how to speak fluently like my younger sister that schooled there. I can understand to some extent sha....... Yoruba language is dope.

Why is Yoruba the dominant language in the music industry today? Why are their movies the highest grossing today? Apart from Sabinus, how many comedians based out side Lagos are super stars? Mention them and compare the number with lagos's.

Very odd way to put it.

Yoruba is spoken in small pockets of the Caribbean, South and Central America, yes. But it is spoken mostly by the descendants of former slaves (people who are still fighting a liberation war of sorts as we speak) and Ifa/YTR devotees. Instead of crowing about internationalization, devote your energy towards assisting the Yoruba speaking underclass in Brasil, Cuba etc. That would be a more worthy endeavour.

Lagos factor that's all. And the tribe that contributed to the present Lagos Yoruba that is quite different from the Oyo Yoruba.

The ijebus, egba and awori are party people who love social events alot. Entertainment is a serious business, these are the major tribe that lead to the Lagos Yoruba dominating everywhere.

The Oyo varient Is not popular. I think Its the Lagos factor.
Besides I think yorubas have more citizen in diaspora so it's easier for Yoruba music to go father than the rest.

The slave trade also, I've heard someone say in Trinidad Tobago Yoruba culture is obvious amongst the black there, I don't know how true it is.

Benin republic speaks Yoruba, Togo speak Yoruba also Liberia etc.

Besides the language is simple to grab from slang.

I mix my Yoruba with some Igbo word because I'm used to hearing Igbo also.
