your point is flawed in the sense that same corruption enabling leakages of subsidized fuel to neighboring countries, can intercept the proceeds of subsidy removal. Your approach is like ignoring the fire ravaging a building to go after the smoke choking people within and around. Corruption is available to deal mercilessly with any rechanneled resource.

It has always been unaffordable at least in terms of opportunity costs but the removal is a politcal matter that requires skill and dexterity. It is not as simple as the president declaring it . He needs support of the National Assembly and other groups in Nigeria. Jonathan could not muster that support. Let us see whether Tinubu will win election first and then whether he does not chicken out. Even military governments have had to back down so let us see

He will, he's the only one among the candidates that knows how to get what he wants.

Removal of fuel subsidy shouldn't affect d price of fuel again since Dangote is about commissioning africa's biggest refinery. Infact d price should be even cheaper cos there's nothing there to be subsidize again.

Fuel subsidy is a poisoned chalice. No matter how good it taste, it’s still disastrous to the overall good of the body. So yes, petroleum subsidy must be completely eliminated sooner than later.

The above notwithstanding, it is better not to rush it under the current petroleum importation regime. Let’s get the Dangote and PH refineries fully operational before completely removing subsidy. That way, the effect won’t be much and the immediate savings of our forex can be used to support the Naira thereby leading to reduction in possible inflation.

That will be a bold leadership decision absolutely necessary for many reasons.
It will first and foremost completely end the corruption associated with the failed subsidy program.
It will also 'hopefully' lead to the kind of upswing in citizen angst that will trigger participation and accountability in governance.

Because the question is simple: With the trillions in savings from subsidy removals, if the funds are then spent.... or wasted the way they have been throughout this present regime and further back on phantom social investment programs or overpriced, unnecessary and ill-advised so called infrastructure projects aimed at rewarding their contractor friends and cronies, then inflation will ultimately destroy the government.

So the advise is clear.
The savings should be channeled towards enterprise bearing investments.
To investments that will generate income in the short, medium and ling term, preferably in foreign exchange.
And what better way to do this than a collaboration between the Sovereign Wealth Fund and Private Sector Partnerships all aimed at exports of various goods and services.
